Tofino - Vargas Island Camping - Part One
Check out my blog!
Woke up at 5 am in Vancouver, left the house by 630 to catch an early bus. The greyhound proved to be a decent option as all transfers were taken care of and connections met. The ferry ride to Nanaimo, as always, was beautiful and relaxing. The Tofino bus (footage not included) was a 3.5-4 hour winding road across the island. Eventually arrived in Tofino and caught a small boat to Vargas island. Once arriving, swam in the ocean and enjoyed the beautiful scenery on the West beach.

Tofino - Vargas Island Camping - Part Two

The adventure continues at at nighttime. We decided to make a fire, and began by scouring the beach for dry wood. We use a folding bahco saw to cut up a log and drag it back to camp. The knives used for batoning include the Ka-bar Becker BK-7 and the Gerber Big rock. The Big rock is awesome value (around $35) for a full tang fixed blade, and is one of the few Gerber knives I actually think is cool! But the BK7 obviously dominates it in terms of blade length and chopping power. The environment here was so moist that the BK7 actually developed some rust spots. Before too long we have a raging blaze going, and chill out listening to the waves, and drink some red wine (Naked Grape Cabernet Sauvignon). Too bad my camera couldn't capture the beautiful stars overheard. We were spotting constellations, and even thought we saw the milky way. No moon though :( Stay tuned for the 3rd and final part!
Tofino - Vargas Island Camping - Part Three
Check out my blog:
In part 3, I walk along the beach after waking up and show the camp site. What a humid environment! The night before, everything was covered in condensation - tent, knives, camera. And it wasn't even raining. I show off the Recon 1, which I dropped in the sand the night before. Deployment was quite gritty and required major cleanup afterwards. It leads me to think about the value of folders vs fixed blades and where each is more appropriate. In short, fixed blades in the wild, folders in the city. This morning I'm going full on 'Cody Lundin' with the Vibram Five Finger shoes. Awesome freedom of movement, and intimacy with the terrain - minus the pain! We also look at the knives of the trip. Mora Clipper Carbon steel, Cold Steel Recon 1, Gerber Big Rock, and the Ka-bar Becker BK-7. All of which are awesome, especially the BK7! We also find a shot gun shell on the beach, or possibly a flare. We check out another beach, that was easy to get to, and very beautiful. Got so lucky with the weather. No rain at all! Eventually we pack up and take the small boat back to town. I briefly show the town, and the bus station before a veryyyy long ride home. Great trip. Thanks for watching!
Where is Vargas Island?
Where is Vargas Island? Most of my friends know that one of my favorite places to land the Mustang ll is on the beach at Vargas Island. It is a magnificent place just west of Pacific Rim National Park on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Today, we make a flight to Vargas Island....land on the beach for a small lunch and then take off for a low altitude tour 'around' the island before returning to land at Tofino Airport. (CYAZ) The scenery is stunning so I hope you'll spend the next 21 minutes with me. Enjoy, and thanks for your support, by watching. (Be sure to set your player to High Definition and bring the sound up.)

Vargas Island with Colin
On a planned week-long trip from Tofino to Hotsprings Cove with my buddy Colin the weather took a turn for nasty after the second day out and we found ourselves marooned on Milties Beach, Vargas Island for the week. Though our rest in the springs was cancelled, Mother Nature gave us the beach. With each heavy rain, or above gale-force winds the sandy landscape changed creating a living beach.
