Around six kilometers before you get to Finale Ligure you pass through a town called Varigotti, here is a beach that seems almost Sardinian in beauty. It is the Baia dei Saraceni, a crescent shaped beach lapped by a sea of ever changing turquoise and emarald shades. Definitely top of my list of the best beaches in Liguria.

The beach is actually just before you get to Varigotti coming from the Savona direction, and is hemmed in by rocks and gorgeous wooded hills. The warm shallow waters are a delight to swim and snorkel in.

Wander down the narrow lanes, passing fishing boats and funny little shops and winding your way through the maze of cottages; suddenly you find yourself right on the town’s lovely beach. The photos below show what to expect on the walk to the beach. If you don’t feel like making the trip to the Baia di Sareceni this beach should more than satisfy.

In Varigotti we have always enjoyed staying at the Hotel Albatross, right in the heart of this magical little village with great sea views. The hotel is really helpful with everything from suggesting great walks through to organizing boat trips to explore the coastal beaches.

Varigotti is a frazione (locality) of the comune of Finale Ligure, in Liguria, northern Italy. In late antiquity times, it was known as Varicottis. In 643, when it was home to a Byzantine fortification, it was destroyed by the Lombard king Rothari. Later it suffered from Saracen raids, and in the 12th century it was contended between the marquisses of Noli and the Del Carretto family. Later it was a possession of the Republic of Genoa, and became an autonomous commune after the French Revolution.

In 1869, during the construction of the Genoa-Ventimiglia railroad, it was annexed to the Final Pia commune, and was subsequently part of the comune of Finale Ligure. Varigotti is a popular tourist destination, with both seaside and natural attractions. Most tourists come in the summer, since Varigotti is famous for its sea and beaches, particularly the Saracen's Beach, which is one of the largest public beaches in liguria.

The establishment of Varigotti is due to the presence, along this stretch of coast, of a natural inlet sheltered from the winds that made such location one of the safest ports along the entire Western Riviera. For this reason it was of great interest to the Romans, Byzantines and Lombards. Later came the Saracens, coming from Provence and who stayed at Varigotti due to the safety of the place which was difficult to access from the land. Due to this, the name of Saracens was attributed to the residents of Varigotti together with the Moorish features of the old village homes that are not found in any other Ligurian locality.

The port, object of disputes between Noli and the marquisate of Finale, saw its greatest prosperity with the domination of the Del Carrettas. In 1341, the Genoans buried the port of Varigotti in order to eliminate possible rivals. With the French Revolution, Varigotti was established as an independent municipality that in 1869 was united with Final Pia, then with Final Marina and Finalborgo, in order to constitute the current Municipality of Finale Ligure.

Today, the economy of Varigotti is mainly based on tourism concentrated during the summer months, thanks to the presence of two long strips of beach linked situated east of the ancient Saracen village (locality of Malpasso) and to the West in correspondence to the most recent area of the town, with numerous seaside resorts. The Church of St. Laurence is of great architectural interest and it dates back to the 12th century and the Castle, the watch tower, dates back to the 16th century set in the midst of the Punta Crema Natural Reserve.
