Originates on the slopes of the Hissar range, formed by the confluence of the rivers Zidda and Mayhura. In the lower reaches, the average water flow is 45.9 m3/s, Max. 61.3 m3 / s, min. 31,5 m3/s and the Power — snegurenko. High water from late February to early October, the maximum flow is observed in June. Mineralization 100-260 mg/l.

In the South, near Dushanbe, Varzob, merging with the shallow river Lyuchob, crosses the city, dividing it into two parts and is called Dushanbe. Further South, it flows into the Kafirnigan river.
During the spring and autumn rains, the river becomes especially stormy[2], carrying a large amount of clay and sand, trapped as a result of mudslides in the waters of the rivers Luchob, Zidda, mayhur and numerous streams.The waters of the river are used for irrigation of a few farms located along the river, and Varzob is the main waterway of the capital of Tajikistan — Dushanbe city, located in the South. In the North of the city, along Varzob there are water treatment systems and the city's Central water supply station.
Also, a cascade of hydroelectric power plants is installed along the river, the largest of which is Varzob HPP — 1 (Verkhne-Varzob).
Along the river, in the gorge of the same name are numerous recreation areas, 40 kilometers is the summer Presidential residence-Puguz. There are in Varzob gorge and underground hot springs in the sanatorium Khoja Obigarm.
12 kilometers from Dushanbe is located Varzob lake-an artificial pond created specifically for the rest of the citizens.
In the waters of the river are found small crustaceans, as well as small fish — Marinka and gobies. River trout are also found in the waters of Varzob. The waters of the river are used as drinking water for the population of Dushanbe.

В нижнем течении средний расход воды составляет 45,9 м3 / с, Макс. 61,3 м3/с, миним. 31,5 м3/с. Питание — снеголедниковое. Половодье с конца февраля до начала октября, максимальный сток наблюдается в июне. Минерализация 100-260 мг/л.

На юге, возле Душанбе, Варзоб, сливаясь с мелкой рекой Лючоб, пересекает город, деля его на две части и называется «Душанбинка». Далее, на юге, впадает в реку Кафирниган.
В период весенних и осенних дождей река становится особенно бурной[2], перенося большое количество глины и песка, попавших в результате схода селей в воды рек лючоб, Зидды, майхура и многочисленных ручьёв.
Воды реки используются для орошения немногочисленных фермерских хозяйств, расположенных вдоль реки, также Варзоб является основной водной артерий столицы Таджикистана — Душанбе города, располагающегося на юге. На севере города, вдоль Варзоба расположены системы водоочистки и городская центральная станция водоснабжения. Также, вдоль реки установлен каскад ГЭС, самая крупная из которых — Варзобская ГЭС-1 (Верхне-Варзобская).
Вдоль реки, в одноимённом ущелье расположены многочисленные зоны отдыха, на 40 километре располагается летняя Президентская резиденция — Пугуз. Имеются в Варзобском ущелье и подземные горячие источники, в санатории Ходжа Обигарм. В 12 километрах от Душанбе расположено Варзобское озеро — искусственный водоём, созданный специально для отдыха горожан. В водах реки водятся мелкие рачки, а также мелкая рыба — маринки и бычки. Также в водах Варзоба встречается речная форель. Воды реки используются в качестве питьевой воды для населения города Душанбе.

Варзоб ГЭС / Varzob

Каскад Варзобских ГЭС — комплекс из трёх малых гидроэлектростанций на реке Варзоб, расположенных на северной окраине города Душанбе, Таджикистан. Входит в состав ОАХК «Барки Точик». Все ГЭС каскада построены по деривационному типу с безнапорной подводящей деривацией. Старейшие гидроэлектростанции Таджикистана. Помимо выработки электроэнергии, обеспечивают водоснабжение Варзобского района и частично города Душанбе. Общая мощность ГЭС каскада — 25,36 МВт.
