The Vasa Museum
The Vasa is the only preserved seventeenth-century ship in the world, and a unique art treasure. More than 95 percent of the ship is original, and it is decorated with hundreds of carved sculptures.
The 69 meter-long warship Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in the middle of Stockholm in 1628, and was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. For nearly half a century the ship has been slowly, deliberately and painstakingly restored to a state approaching its original glory. The three masts on the roof outside the specially built museum show the height of the ship's original masts. Today the Vasa Museum is the most visited museum in Scandinavia, with over one million visitors a year.

We visited the Vasa Museum in Stockholm back in May of 2015. The wooden ship was far larger than what I had ever imagined. Overall it was quite a nice and educational experience, and this 4K UHD video tour of the place will give you an idea what it is like inside.

WHAT TO SEE IN STOCKHOLM | THE VASA MUSEUM
The Vasa Museum is one of the must see destination in Stockholm, Sweden. On our last full day in Stockholm we had no idea what to do, the weather kind of made it a bit too cold to go out exploring for too long so Corey & I decided we'd check out some of the local museums. After a quick google search we saw that the Vasa Museum was the #1 place to visit for so many different reasons.
The Vasa is an old warship that spent 333 years sunk in Stockholm's harbour before it was eventually recovered and resurfaced in 1961. I'm not that big into history but the Vasa was quite interesting and had a crazy story behind how it came to be and it's inevitable sinking.
The rest of our day was spent wondering round the parks around the Vasa museum and trying to stay warm whilst taking in the frozen lakes and beautiful scenery.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time in Sweden. The next time I go I'll make sure it's in the summer which apparently is when it really comes to life!

In 1628, the Swedish warship Vasa, sank to the bottom of Stockholm Harbour on her maiden voyage. 330 years later in 1956, the Vasa was found and raised by Anders Franzen.
The Vasa was vitually intact, a perfect time capsule.

The Swedish Warship Vasa (Regalskeppet Vasa in Swedish) is the ship that inspired the design of the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Now located at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.
Vasa (or Wasa) is a Swedish warship built between 1626 and 1628. The ship foundered after sailing about 1,300 m (1,400 yd) into its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. It fell into obscurity after most of her valuable bronze cannon were salvaged in the 17th century until she was located again in the late 1950s in a busy shipping lane just outside the Stockholm harbor. Salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961, it was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet ('The Wasa Shipyard') until 1988 and then moved permanently to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The ship is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions and has been seen by over 35 million visitors since 1961. Since her recovery, Vasa has become a widely recognised symbol of the Swedish 'great power period' and is today a de facto standard in the media and among Swedes for evaluating the historical importance of shipwrecks.
The ship was built on the orders of the King of Sweden Gustavus Adolphus as part of the military expansion he initiated in a war with Poland-Lithuania (1621–1629). It was constructed at the navy yard in Stockholm under a contract with private entrepreneurs in 1626–1627 and armed primarily with bronze cannon cast in Stockholm specifically for the ship. Richly decorated as a symbol of the king's ambitions for Sweden and himself, upon completion she was one of the most powerfully armed vessels in the world. However, Vasa was dangerously unstable and top-heavy with too much weight in the upper structure of the hull. Despite this lack of stability she was ordered to sea and foundered only a few minutes after encountering a wind stronger than a breeze.

The Vasa Museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged. The 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The museum was officially opened on 15 June 1989. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia. So far, Vasa has been seen by over 25 million people. The main hall contains the ship itself, and various exhibits related to the archaeological findings of the ships and early 17th-century Sweden. Around the ship are numerous exhibits and models portraying the construction, sinking, location and recovery of the ship. There are also exhibits that expand on the history of Sweden in the 17th century, providing background information for why the ship was built.
