Iceland-Vatnajokull National Park
Vatnajökull National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland. It encompasses all of Vatnajökull glacier and extensive surrounding areas. These include the national parks previously existing at Skaftafell in the southwest and Jökulsárgljúfur in the north.
In general, national parks are protected areas which are considered unique because of their nature or cultural heritage. The unique qualities of Vatnajökull National Park are primarily its great variety of landscape features, created by the combined forces of rivers, glacial ice, and volcanic and geothermal activity.

Hof, in Öræfi, is a cluster of farms in the municipality of Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður in southeast Iceland, close to Vatnajökull glacier, and twenty two kilometres south of Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park. It is located on the Route 1 southwest of Höfn, in the narrow strip between the sea coast and the glacier.
A notаble building in Hof is a turf church, which was built in 1883 and is the youngest turf church in Iceland. Since 1951, it belongs to the National Museum of Iceland.

An amazing day of driving and hiking. First the blue-hued and moody fantasy landscapes of the Jökulsárlón and Fjallasárlón glacial lagoons. Then, after the rain had stopped, a strapping 18km hike around the incredibly beautiful Skaftafell national park.

Part-II Flying over Waterfall Skógafoss
Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is located at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.
Jökulsárlón is separated from the sea by only a short distance, and the combined action of the glacier, the river that empties from the lake, and the ocean may eventually transform it into an inlet of the sea. There are plans to prevent this from happening, since the only road in the area passes over the narrow isthmus.
It is not far from the Icelandic Ring Road, and buses travelling between Höfn and Reykjavík usually stop there. The lake is filled with icebergs, which are calving off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier.
At its shore, in the summertime, one has to watch out for the skuas, big seagulls which have their nests on the ground around the lake and which can occasionally become aggressive.
Near Jökulsárlón, there are two other glacial lakes, Fjallsárlón and Breiðárlón.

How to get to a glacier in Iceland! / Visiting Hoffell (Iceland in Action: Episode #1)

Trip to Iceland - Episode 4: A glacier full of surprises
In this episode, the biggest glacier of Iceland appears on the horizon, as our three travelers enter the Vatnajökull National Park. But before setting foot on the vast stretch of ice, they take a little detour. Then, they end up in a surreal place, surrounded by the icebergs that break off from the Vatnajökull glacier and drift towards the open sea. When the time comes to find a place to spend the night, the campsite in Höfn seems to be the perfect choice.

The trip ends in Hofn, blooming city close to the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull in the south eastern part of Iceland.n this region you are located at the base of Vatnajökull, and the scenery is breathtaking. Vatnajökull National Park, the largest national park in Europe, is situated in the community. In the last few decades tourism has grown enormously and has, in fact, become a major economic sector in the community. Höfn's growth in the 20th century from a small village to today's town was a result of the development of a relatively diverse fishing industry. The landed catch is now more varied than in other fishing towns, including high-value species such as the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus), but a good part of the Icelandic lobster catch is landed at Höfn.
