Vatsala Durga Temple at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal
Vatsala Durga Temple at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur in Nepal. One can see the Chyasilin Mandap on the left side of Vatsala Durga Temple.
This temple dedicated to a mother goddess is full of intricate works on stone. This temple is known for its dog-barking bell. This bell is believed to produce a death knell when it is rung up.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square the city is also known is a museum of medieval art and architecture with many examples of sculpture, woodcarving and colossal pagoda temples consecrated to different gods and goddesses which is 15 km far from Kathmandu. It is a conglomeration of pagoda and shikhara-style temples grouped around a fifty-five window palace of brick and wood. The square is one of the most charming architectural showpieces of the Valley as it highlights the ancient arts of Nepal. The golden effigies of kings perched on the top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in every place-struts, lintels, uprights, tympanums, gateways and windows-all seem to form a well-orchestrated symphony. Pottery and weaving are its major traditional industries.

17th Century Stone Siddhi Lakshmi Temple at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur, Nepal
The 17th Century Stone Siddhi Lakshmi Temple at Bhaktapur Durbar Square in Bhaktapur in Nepal. One can see the Stone male and female guardian horses, garlanded rhinos, human-faced lions and camels on the staircase leading up to the temple.
By the southeastern corner of the palace stands the attractive 17th-century stone Siddhi Lakshmi Temple. There was minor earthquake damage here but the temple is still standing. The steps up to the temple are flanked by male and female attendants, each leading a child and a rather eager-looking dog. On successive levels, the stairs are flanked by horses, garlanded rhinos, human-faced lions, and camels. The temple itself is built in the classic shikhara style, commonly seen in the north of India.
Behind the temple is a neglected corner of the square that contains a pair of lost-looking curly-haired stone lions who, depending on what theory you subscribe to, are either guarding the palace or the site of a lost temple that crumbled to dust in the 1934 earthquake. The small red-brick Vatsala Temple collapsed in the 2015 earthquake.

Part 1 of 3 – Bhaktapur, Nepal - Erotic Temple Images
There is any number of stories explaining why the erotic carvings are on the temples, especially the struts. Some are mundane, some are mysterious. In researching the purpose/intent of the imagery, I found the following suggestions: (a) a celebration of life; (b) Tantric lore and mysticism; (c) sex education, Kama Sutra; (d) a mantra for the goddesses inside; (e) prevents negative spirits from entering the temple; (f) ciphers that hide many layers of meanings; and finally, (g) make up one of your own.
I had visited Nepal in 2001 for three weeks and taken over 2,000 photos. These images have been lost, deep in my folders until recently. And so here are my completed projects. [Please note that any poor quality is due to the resolution of the early digital cameras!]
Bhaktapur Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Bhaktapur in Nepal.
Bhaktapur, also known as ‘the city of the pious’ is the third of the ancient royal cities in the thirty kilometer long Kathmandu Valley in the Kingdom of Nepal and also a Unesco World Heritage Sight. On both sides of Durbar Square are many precious art treasures but the city is also fully-functional and a ‘car free’ open air museum! The medieval city derived from a fortress complex and was later transformed into a palace area. At the western end of Durbar Square is Dvarikanath Mandir, a replica of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.Today, a huge pair of lions flank the entrance to the National Art Gallery and there are images of Hanuman and Narasimha.Vatsala Durga Mandir is a temple with a square, three-tiered base. This sacred building has a corridor set around a central Shikhara tower and its stairway is flanked by elephants and two fantastic horses. The number of the city’s small temples, shrines and dwellings of the gods is many and complex and they can be found at each crossroads and in every courtyard and doorway.Bhaktapur has also been immortalized in the movie, Little Buddha. For those interested in culture, the Kingdom of Nepal is a dream destination and Bhaktapur is a truly atmospheric journey into a rich and golden past.

Nyatapola Temple - Bhaktapur, Nepal
Nyatapola temple and its complex in Nepal. One can see stalls selling a variety of paintings and books. Tourists in large numbers visit the temple.
In the eighteenth century Bhaktapur was known country-wide for its production of quality pottery pieces and beautiful art works, which included sculptures completed in both wood and stone. Today this reputation Bhaktapur has continues and is sustained by the tourist industry, which flourishes in this area. The city gives you a glimpse of what life was like centuries ago having changed very little since it was first formed.
Durbar Square can be found in the center of Bhaktapur and like Kathmandu contains many beautiful temples where the Nepalese people can go and pay homage to one of the many Hindu gods. At one point the square was crowded with temples and statues but with the 1934 earthquake many of these ancient buildings were destroyed and to this day have yet to be built again. In comparison to the city of Patan, the Bhaktapur Durbar Square is bigger and more neatly laid out but with many empty spaces where temples once stood.
Nyatapola Temple is a 5-storey pagoda located in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The temple was erected by Nepali King Bhupatindra Malla during a 5-month period from late 1701 into 1702. It is the temple of Siddha Laxmi, the Hindu goddess of prosperity.
Bhaktapur is one of the three cities found in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal not far from the capital city of Kathmandu. The name Bhaktapur means City of devotees. Today this ancient, medieval city, from the fifteenth century, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, which records buildings that are of cultural and natural value universally.
