Place to visit near Kanya Kumari - Vattakottai Fort & Beach, it is a must see ancient fort by British.
History of the Fort
The Fort was built in the 18th century, under the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy as a coastal defence-fortification and barracks in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom. Captain Eustachius was an ex-Dutch naval officer of the Dutch East India Company, who later became commander of the Travancore Army, the very army that once defeated him in the Battle of Colachel in the 18th century, as after the battle he earned the trust of the Travancore King Marthanda Varma. De Lannoy constructed Vattakottai, as a part of the defence-fortifications he undertook throughout Travancore.
Vattakottai Fort, as the name goes, is a circular fort located about 6 kms to the north-east of Kanyakumari town, in Agasteeswaram taluk. The Fort, built entirely of stone, consists of watchtowers, rest rooms and a few weapon rooms. Many of the walls within the fort have carvings of a fish-like motif on them. Vattakottai Fort commands a picturesque view of the calm waters of the Arabian from one side of the parade ground of the fort, and the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal on the other. Another notable feature of the Fort is that near its site, there is a beach consisting entirely of black sands, located about 7 kms from the Kanyakumari town.
There is also a cemetery inside the fort, which most probably would be having the remains of the occupants of the fort, and the oldest among the burial sites dates to 1704.

One Day Trip in Kanyakumari POSSIBLE ? | Tourist Places | Thirparappu waterfalls | Vattakottai Fort
Exploring the southern most part of India Kanyakumari in a day was quite a tough task. This was the second day of the trip. We started with the beautiful sun rise at Kanyakumari shore. The moment was glorious which energies mind, body and soul. Strongly recommend to atleast see once in life. Then we visited Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial - which is one of the most revered places for Pilgrimage. The Bhagavathy Amman Temple or the Kanyakumari temple is right near to the Vivekanandar Mandabam. FYI this entire journey was by ferry. The view of the Thiruvalluvar statue from Vivekanandar Mandabam was extraordinary. We also visited Vattakottai Fort, Thirparappu waterfalls. We missed places such as Padmanabhapuram Palace, Mathoor Thottipalam because of the waiting time at Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial. I have heard that the best season for sun rise view at Kaniyakumari is from Nov - Feb but we will talk about in a separate video.

Vattakottai Fort and nearby windfarm - Kanyakumari
Vattakottai Fort (or 'Circular Fort') is a seaside fort near Kanyakumari. Archeologists could trace the origin of the fort to Pandya Kings(12th century AD). But the massive outer wall of the fort near the entrance bears the symbol of two elephants and a conch shell above the words Vattakottai in English which is the symbol of the Travancore Kings. It is said that the Dutch general DeLannoy and his Navy attacked Vattakottai when it was controlled by Marthanda Varma, and were defeated miserably. The Dutch surrendered to Marthanda Varma after their defeat in the Battle of Colachal and later DeLannoy became one of Varma's most faithful generals.
Vattakottai Fort commands a picturesque view of both the sea on the one side, and the hills (Western Ghats) on the other. We can see Marunthuvazhmalai(A hill in western ghats where medicinal plants are said to grow. Its having a relation to Ramayana) from the fort. Another interesting features near the site is a beach of black sands and the windfarms which can be seen from the fort.It is a protected site under the Indian archaeological department.
