The Vault: France 22 - 24 England, 2012
This may have been just the fourth match of Stuart Lancaster’s tenure, but it was one of the most dogged performances and best away results of his time in charge.
The Vault - 1997, England v New Zealand at Twickenham
New Zealand came into this game on the back of 11 consecutive Test wins, including three dominant tour victories – 63-15 against Ireland, 25-8 over England in Manchester and 42-7 in a one-sided clash with Wales.
There had been 16 tries in just 240 minutes of rugby – one every quarter of an hour on average. Woodward was searching for a maiden triumph in his fourth game in charge and the All Blacks did not seem in any sort of mood to hand it over.
But England began brilliantly. Lawrence Dallaglio, Richard Hill and wing David Rees each crossed to accumulate a 23-9 half-time lead. However, mental grit and sheer bloody-mindedness have always been key attributes that make up New Zealand’s DNA.
As the game stretched in a fractured second half, the All Blacks turned the screw and tries for Walter Little and Andrew Mehrtens, who also kicked 16 points, ensured Woodward would have to wait 10 more weeks for that first success.
The Vault - England v Ireland, 2003
Delve into the vault and re-live England's famous 42-6 victory over Ireland in 2003.
What is your favourite memory of this match?
The Vault England 32 Australia 31, November 2002
A third consecutive victory over the reigning world champions represented a significant step along the road to Clive Woodward’s England lifting the Webb Ellis Cup 12 months on.
Typically tenacious and resilient, the Wallabies scored three tries either side of half-time through Elton Flatley – who bagged a brace – and Wendell Sailor to open up a 25-16 advantage after Ben Cohen had put the hosts ahead early on.
However, totemic skipper Martin Johnson and his powerful pack hauled England back into contention. James Simpson-Daniel, also the architect of Cohen’s first, stood at first receiver and sent the Northampton Saints wing over for his 18th try in 20 Tests.
Matt Burke missed a penalty for Australia in a manic finale but England held on to claim the Cook Cup, extending their unbeaten Twickenham run to 17 matches.
The Vault - England v Samoa, 2005
Structure against style, function against flair – any contest between England and a Pacific Island nation is billed as a tussle between two distinct approaches.
In today's Throwback Thursday we look back at three historic clashes between England and Samoa at Twickenham:

The Vault: France 22 England 24, 2012
This may have been just the fourth match of Stuart Lancaster’s tenure, but it remains both one of the most dogged performances and best away results of his time in charge.
Massive tenacity – epitomised by Owen Farrell’s earth-shattering tackle on Imanol Harinorodoquy late in the piece – and three exceptional tries underpinned a tense 24-22 triumph at the Stade de France that was England’s first victory across The Channel since 2008.
The Vault England 54 Fiji 12, November 2012
Short periods of indiscipline and a few missed opportunities did not prevent a largely satisfying performance from Stuart Lancaster’s England side to begin their autumn campaign.
Seven tries punctuated a comfortable victory against the hard-hitting Pacific Islanders, who crossed the whitewash twice through sparky scrum half Nikola Matawalu and replacement Sekonaia Kalou.
