Mahiyangana is a town in Badulla District, Uva Province of Sri Lanka. Lord Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka was to Mahiyangana.It is the land of the veddahs aborigens dating to the visit of the buddha to Sri Lanka to stop the war between the race of yakksas (demons) and the race nagas (serpents); where the buddha preaced the grand monument was erected the dagaba while buddha was living; Bintenna was the village called by the veddha land it relates to the story of first habittents of the sinhala race dating to five hundred years BC where kuveni the chif of demons marries the prince of India (the son of the king sinhabahu, vijaya was the prince)and gives birth two children girl and a boy,and they have children and they are called the first veddhas.

Mahiyangana is home to the Veddhasknown as Vannilaetto, meaning people of the forest who are in fact on the list of the world,s primitive tribes and considered to be the descendants of the Yaksa and Naga Gothra that inhabited Sri Lanka thousands of years ago Located 185 kilometers from the capital Colombo on the South East region of Matale,this dry historic yet highly developed town, is rich in agriculture and livestock farming. The Mahaweli River water is diverted to Mahiyangana, to enable farmers to do their cultivation which is a main source of income to the community.

The name Mahiyangana (also known as Bintenna) means the flat land. It is situated eastwards to the steep eastern falls of central hills. A person travelling on Kandy - Padiyathalawa road can clearly see the flatness of the area. Situated at a great location by Mahaweli river Mahiyangana provide access several National parks, Bird watiching Locations and Sanctuaries. Mahiyangana Rajmaha Viharaya, Sorabora Wewa Tank, Dambana Veddhas,Ulhitiya Wewa, Minipe, Randenigala, Maduruoya, Wasgomuwa are major Attractions here.

SRI LANKAN FOOD - Sri Lanka is known As the pearl of the Indian Ocean, and that's because it really is a gem of an island. Today we had the privilege to visit an Indigenous Vedda Sri Lankan Village, where they prepared for us some traditional Sri Lankan food.

We first arrived to the lake, where we then had to take a boat across the lake, and then walk for about 30 minutes to get the village. The lush greenery, and an actual beauty was pristine. It started raining, so we just stopped cup of tea.

We arrived at the village, and we were greeted with open hands and an extremely warm welcom. The Aunty started cooking, a number of different dishes using millet, and the main dish with fresh deer meat. The food was unlike other Sri Lankan food I had before, and relied mainly on crops and ingredients they grew themselves locally.

It was an honor to experience Vedda culture and tradition, and food. Even though Uncle and I could not speak the same language or communicate verbally, it was hugely rewarding to just sit next to Uncle, smile, and share thoughts and positivity.

This was one of the most memorable meals and experiences I had in Sri Lanka.

The Yaka tribe and indigenous community in ancient Sri Lanka. Whose are refugees in forest areas of the country in the face of experiences of the Asian civilization in the fifth century BC? It is believed that today is the veddas /vaddas community is the prosperity of those people. Hunting is the major livelihood of the Vedda community. They can also be label its hunter-gathers. The Veddas practice a culture of death. They worship and make incantations to their relatives called Naa Yaka. They believed relative sprite help them to hunt and gather their food. They are for a portion of they have hunted to the spirits. They produced dried meet as a mean of the preserve in the food. The Vadda community used to live in a cave in ancient time. They weaved to constructing homes in the forest area at the latest age. These subsequently called Vadi Gammana. At present, some Veddas had turned to agriculture. Its a parentha there Quaid relantha to embossed to all the new trend and give up their heritage in the face in huge transformation. Their lifestyle is simple and one with nature.
The Vedda community is found in several parts of the island, while the majority area condensed in the Dambana area. Their dedication to pretend cultural identity is brought them much attention from the altered world. there is a complete range of customs in jungle life. The jungle is a life. We are like to respect the jungle as we are never should be environmentally safe. Wariga Gedara is a wonderful place which teaches people how to live with environmental harmoniously. Kiri Koraha rich way is an identical cultural practice of the Vedda community.it has employed many visitors of Dambana. the action of them and would not benefit only us. Every been including small features had to right to lives to protect the environment. This interest in the aboriginal community is one of the most freshness national assets of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's Aborigines', or the Veddha's meaning people of the forest of Sri Lanka has a history much older than prince Vijaya's landing in 5th century BC and the origins of the Sinhala race. Archaeological evidence suggest that modern Veddha's Neolithic ancestors inhabited this island as far back as 10,000 BC with. Once roaming the Great Plains' of the north central region to the central mountains, today the remaining Veddha population are confined to Dambana which is close to Maduru oya sanctuary.

Mahiyanganaya - Places to visit in Sri lanka

Mahiyanganaya is a town situated close to the Mahaweli River in Badulla District, Uva Province of Sri Lanka. It is said that Gautama Buddha visited Mahiyanganaya on the full moon Poya day of January in order to settle a dispute arose between Yakkas and Nagas (two tribes then inhabited this area) and this was his first ever visit to Sri Lanka. Then the Buddha preached Dhamma to Sumana Saman, a leader in this area, to whom the Buddha gave a handful of his hair relic so that people could worship. After that Sumana Saman (now the god Sumana Saman) built a golden chethiya in which the sacred hair relic was deposited. Later on about seven chethiyas were built over the original golden chethiya from time to time, the last one being built by the King Dutugemunu. As such, this historic town is a very sacred place for Buddhists.

The Vedda Tribe

I worked with 4 anthropology students with this film. They wanted to explore the negative impact of western society on native tribes. Asking questions such as can our cultures live side by side peacefully and what do you think is left for your grandchild when the come of age? to the ever wise leader of the Vedda. A fascinating culture.

The subtitling was a very tricky business, going through 3 people, so the words maybe not be exact, but the context and the points are true to what is being said.

Interaction with Vedda Community Sri Lanka November 2008

During the visit, it was interesting to observe the unique cultural practices of the Vedda community. However, it was disappointing to learn that cultural assimilation of Veddas with Sinhala populations is happening to a great extent. During my informal interviews with young members of the community, I realized that many of them want to get formal education and get jobs to go out of the Vedda way of life. Technologies such as mobile phones and TV have also influenced their cultural values and they have been bought in to popular Sinhala culture. This trend was also confirmed by seniors of the community during the discussions. Vedda community may disappear after few decades if effective conversation measures are not taken.

Srilankan Veddha family inspired dishes / Indigenous Srilankan food

Hi everyone,
As you may have already heard Srilanka was attacked by a radical terrorist group just a few days ago. However this video was done a few months back and this is the true srilankan tribal people. The real owners of Srilanka, yet they are the most peaceful.

It was a experience of a lifetime and a unforgettable one at that. I must tell you that there is a village run by the government, where you can buy tickets and go see the tribal leader and also the museum and history of the VEDDHA community. But we decided to go visit an actual family as opposed to a curated show and tell.
It is extremely hard to find such tribal families nowadays as most of the veddhas have adopted to modern or farming lifestyles. Also most of the younger generation of tribal veddhas wants to educate themselves and live as farmers than hunters and gatherers,which is understandable as living a tribal life is quite hard.

This family is tribal family and the son of the head veddha has made a family for himself with a woman from the village,which is uncommon as they rarely mix in. But this is the new age of Veddahs who wants to adopt into farming and agriculture.

It was quite facinating to watch and learn how this one lady from the village has made a family and living a lifestyle that is a mix of village and veddha tribal cultures.
