..a located in the heart of the Nature Park Velebit . Approximately 20 km from Gospic(Lika region) and 18 km from Karlobag (Adriatic sea) . The location is unique, because there is changing three climates : mountain, continental and mediterranean with a diversity of flora and fauna .

KUBUS (The Cube):

The monument dedicated to the building of the Karlobag– Gospić Road across the Velebit, the Cube (Kubus, Ura) on four spheres is situated on the Oštarije Saddle or Stara vrata, at 927 m above sea level from where the view extends over Karlobag, the island of Pag and the entire Velebit Channel.
In 1846 the Cube was put up during the construction of the road from Gospić to Karlobag (1844-1850). There are 33 steps leading to the Cube. On one side of the cube there is the inscription Ferdinand I, Austrian Emperor MDCCCXLVI.

VELEBIT MOUNTAIN RANGE:

..forms a part of the Dinaric Alps and is located along the Adriatic coast, separating it from Lika in the interior. Velebit begins in the northwest near Senj with the Vratnik mountain pass and ends 145 km to the southeast near the source of the Zrmanja river northwest of Knin.
The important characteristic of Velebit are its simple, solid form, stiff cliffs, and the nakedness of seaward side and the wood-covered slopes of the Lika side. The basic geological characteristic of the mountains is karst; flora and fauna are abundant.
Velebit as a whole is a nature park, from which two national parks have been carved out: Paklenica and Northen Velebit.

Srednji Velebit / Šatorina / Oštarije (Hiking in Croatia)
Ovdje u Lipnju često puše vjetar pa je prilično ugodno uspinjanje na vrh Srednjeg Velebita s kojeg se pruža možda najljepši pogled na sve strane. Vidi se nekoliko otoka na Jadranu čak i dijelovi Like a naročito šumoviti predjeli unutrašnjosti planine. Tamne smrekove šume okružuju prostrane proplanke i doline a bjelogorične šume krase više predjele. Planinska je trava već prilično visoka i puna prekrasnog divljeg cvijeća. Divlje životinje čak i za dnevne svjetlosti često borave na zelenim travnjacima i tako je obično, sve dok ne počnu ljetne suše. Povratkom s vrha nastavlja se put vozilom na jugoistok. Uzdužna šumska cesta vodi sve do granice sa južnim dijelom planine gdje se onda spušta prema moru ili suprotnu u unutrašnjost ... (Pavle Balenović: Velebit 2011.).

ENGLISH: Because of the wind in June it is quite a pleasant climb to the top of the Central Velebit Mountain which offers perhaps the best view in all directions. Several Adriatic islands can be seen even parts of Lika and most of forested areas inside the mountain. The dark spruce forests surround the spacious glades and valleys and deciduous forests adorn higher areas. Mountain grass is already quite high and full of beautiful wildflowers. Wild animals often stay in the openings even during daylight as long as the grass is green ... until summer drought starts. The trip continues by truck to the southeast. Longitudinal forest road leads to the border with the southern part of the mountain where it descends to the sea or the opposite in the interior ... (Paul Balenović: Velebit).

Wolves on the road Velebit-Plitvice Lakes (Vukovi putem za NP)
Perhaps the most breathtaking tourist destination of all and one which attracted over a million tourists last year are the UNESCO Plitvice Lakes in Croatia.Magical beauty of the park with sixteen lakes and thousands of waterfalls attracts people all the year through.
In the eighties on the crossroads on the way to Plitvice National Park, Gypsies used to show bears - tied to the chain in the nostrils. Their Dancing performance would be accompanied by the sound of the drum and the tourists would reward the attraction. Such treatment for the wild animal hasn't been regulated by law. In that time for example the wolf was still considered a pest, which led to almost extermination. The wolf is a living symbol of the Croatian Lika region. Despite once roaming the plains and the mountains in numbers, this iconic animal has recently come dangerously close to extinction. Extensive hunting had reduced their population to less than one hundred. Only recently that magnificent creature has been protected as a threatened species. Although much progress has been made over the past years, conservationists are still working diligently especially by controlling the application and compliance of the law on its protection.
Although the center of the park was often overburden with visitors, in those hidden areas animals were almost safe and protected, but as soon as they crossed the border, they would be found in the hunting grounds surrounding the park.The surroundings were especially attractive to foreign hunters.
Poor Gypsies no longer show drummer dancers.
But today, those richer, the restaurant owners along the busy road are attracting their guests with the bear in the cage.

HRVATSKI PRIJEVOD: Možda najuzbudljivija turistička destinacija od svih i jedna koja je prošle godine privukla više od milijun turista su UNESCO Plitvička jezera u Hrvatskoj. Veličanstvena ljepota parka sa šesnaest jezera i tisućama slapova privlači ljude tijekom cijele godine.
U osamdesetima na križanjima cesta putem prema Nacionalnom parku Plitvička jezera, Cigani su znali pokazivali medvjeda vezanog lancem za brnjicu u nosnicama. Njegov ples popraćen zvukom bubnja turisti bi nagradili kao atrakciju. Takav tretman prema divljoj životinji nije bio reguliran zakonom. U to se vrijeme, na primjer, vuk smatrao štetočinom. Vuk - živi simbol Hrvatske regije Lika. Unatoč tome što je nekad nastanjivao i ravnice i planine u velikom broju, ova je ikonska životinja nedavno došla opasno blizu izumiranja. Opsežnim lovom smanjio se njegov broj na manje od stotinu. Tek nedavno, to je veličanstveno stvorenje zaštićeno kao ugrožena vrsta. Iako je tijekom proteklih godina došlo do velikog napretka, konzervativci i dalje marljivo rade naročito na kontroli primjene zakona o njegovoj zaštiti.
Iako je centar parka bio prekrcan posjetiteljima, u onim skrivenijim prostorima životinje su bile gotovo sigurne i zaštićene, ali čim bi prešle granicu, našle bi se u lovištima koja okružuju park. Ta je okolica bila uvijek posebno privlačna stranim lovcima.
Siromašni Cigani više ne pokazuju plesača uz bubanj.
No danas, oni bogatiji, vlasnici restorana duž prometne ceste, privlače svoje goste medvjedom kojeg drže u kavezu.

ČETNICI SU UNAPRIJED U ŠUMI ZVANOJ IMOVINA ISKOPALI ROV U KOJI SU NAMJERAVALI BACITI BRANITELJE I CIVILE, KAO I ZA VRIJEME 2.SVJ. RATA.. NISU USPJELI.
