Beautiful Sri Lanka - Velgam Vehera, Kanniyava, Trincomalee
Velgama Vehera is especially known as a temple that attracted Sinhalese, Tamil and Indian Buddhist worshippers.
We wanted to take a video that reflected the surroundings, the sound of rain added a nice touch.

Velgam Raja Maha Viharaya - Kannya, Trincomale (Gokanna)
Velgam Raja Maha Viharaya - Kannya, Trincomale (Gokanna)
About 8 miles from Trincomalee, on a path extending beyond the bound of the beautiful tank called Periyakulam (2 miles left just short of Milepost 6 on the Northcoast Road) is a Buddhist temple of unusual interest; Velgam Vihara, known to Hindus as Natanar Kovil.
This is one of the first buddhist maha viharas built by great King Devanampiyatissa after planting a branch of dethis palaruha Boo tree.
Later King Bathiya the I, King Agbo the II and King Vijayabahu the I renovated the temple time to time.
Lying north-west of Trincomalee, it is close to Kinniyai. This ancient vihara dating back to the 2nd century was one of the few Buddhist sites that was not destroyed by the invading Cholas. Instead they called it Rajarajaperumpalli after their emperor Rajaraja and added their own structures and embellishments. When Vijaya Bahu seized the throne and installed himself as the sovereign of Lanka in the 11th century, Velgam Vihara was restored by him.
Within the walls of a broad prakara enclosing a huge area are several structures half covered by grass and shaded by trees. Dominating the centre is the tall stone Buddha statue.
Several entrances lead into the enclosure. There are brick dagobas with plain stone guard stones and plain moonstones. Scattered here and there are stone bowls, old Sinhala and chola inscriptions, yantra galas and image houses. Two stone baths lay on the jungle side of the enclosure, one inside the walls and the other just outside the perimeter. Cut into the base of this bath are small grooves akin to stone waves to prevent slipping.
Steps leading out of the prakara head into the jungle-covered hill. On a rock upon this hill is an inscription by a commander of King Bhatiya Tissa II (142-168 AD) named Abhaya which records a vihara at the site was named Abhagara.
Welgam Vihara remains visually untouched by the strife that haunts the region. An LTTE camp lied close by and they destroyed the new temple in 2000 and massacred village people. The Buddhist monks are still in occupation. Spectres of massacres haunt them and often the jungle is their refuge and fear is their constant companion.

Thiriyaya (Girihadu seya,Nithupathpana) chetiya Built when Buddha was alive. Two merchants Thapassu and Balluka were fortunate enough to offer the very first alms giving to Buddha after he reached Buddha hood.Responding to their request, Buddha handed over to them his hair as a relic.
These two merchants carried the hair relic with them on business trips. Then they placed the hair relic on a rock and went to collect some vital things. On their return, they couldn't lift the container, which had the hair relic.realizing that the spot was a blessed place, in accordance with the tradition, to build a Dagaba enshrining the relic.

Girihandu Seya Ancient Stone Bridge (ගිරිහඬු සෑය ගල් පාලම), Thiriyaya - 2018
In ancient Sri Lanka, especially the Anuradhpura Kingdom, the road network had been amazingly modern and very well constructed.
There are many scholars who had revealed its grandeur existence using historical recollections from travellers such as Chinese monk Fa-Hsien, who visited the island around 415 A.D. He states that the roads and streets in the city of Anuradhapura were excellently laid out and beautifully maintained. He further states that there were four principal streets in Anuradhapura and that they were wide and well paved with bricks and lined with walls also built of bricks.
Though people in the ancient Sri Lanka didn’t have to travel long distances, the rulers ensured the roads are well-paved, maintained and built to high standards. In order to overcome the many rivers/streams, they build massive stone bridges over them. Unfortunately at present, we only have remains of 5 such places scattered in A’Pura, Mihinthale, Thiriyaya and Kayankerni.
There are at least 5 large scale stone bridges discovered in Sri Lanka. The most popular is the bridge over the Malwathu Oya.3
1. Bridge over Malwathu Oya (Anuradhapura)
2. Bridge over Halpan Ela (Anuradhapura)
3. Bridge close to Mahakanadarawa Reservoir (Mihinthale)
4. Bridge at the Girihandu Seya (Thiriyaya)
5. Bridge in Kayankerni (Eastern Province)
I’ve visited one of them before at Mahakanadarawa in Mihintale which is considered to be the best preserved Ancient Stone Bridge in Sri Lanka. During our visit to the Eastern Coast in Trincomalee, we went to see the oldest stupa in the world, Girihandu Seya (Nithupathpana Vihara / Girikandi Caitya) where you can also see one of the oldest stone bridges in the world known as Girihandu Seya Stone Bridge (Thiriyaya Stone Bridge).
There will be separate and comprehensive videos of Girhandu Seya Archaeological Site and Stupa.

I’ve done this video to make you aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin it. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it.
I also have a very kind and humble request to make. Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Girihandu Seya Stupa (ගිරිහඬු සෑය දාගැබ), Thiriyaya (2018) - 2 of 2
Girihandu Seya (also known as Nithupathpana Vihara and Girikandi Caitya) is an ancient Buddhist Temple situated in Thiriyaya, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. The temple is supposed to be the first Buddhist Stupa in Sri Lanka, believed to be constructed by two seafaring merchants Tapassu and Bhallika (තපස්සු හා භල්ලුක). The names of the two merchants are recorded in a rock inscription found in the Vihara premises. According to the inscription, Girihandu Seya was built by the guilds of merchants named Trapassuka and Vallika where the names are written as Tapassu and Bhalluka in later Sinhala chronicles.
The Stupa in the Vihara is highly venerated by the people, as it is believed to contain the hair relics of Lord Buddha. The temple has been formally recognized by the Government as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka.
The temple is situated on a small hillock near the sea coast about 47 km (29 mi) to the north of Trincomalee. The summit is occupied by a Vatadage containing the Stupa in the center. The Stupa was originally small in size and had been enlarged in the 8th century A.D. The Vatadageya covers the Stupa with concentric circles of stone pillars similar to Thuparama and Lankarama Stupas at Anuradhapura.
The stone made circular platform of the Vatadageya is opened to the four directions and accessed by flight of steps with guard stones (Muragala) and balustrades (Korawak Gala) showing the usual Sinhalese architecture. On the terraces lower than the Vatadageya are vestiges of monastic structures including ruined buildings, stone pillars, flight of steps, ponds, and remains of a stone bridge.
The slopes of the hill are some rock caves, two of which contain Brahmi inscriptions, one in the pre-Christian form of that script and the other dating from about the first century. To the South of the Vatadageya is another rock inscription engraved on a rock surface, which contain eleven line of writings revealing the names of two merchants as well as the temple.
The short prose inscription in the Vihara, written in Sanskrit, states that it was indited in the 23rd year of the reign of king Silamegha, Lord of Simhala. This monarch in the inscription is identified with the king Aggabodi VI (741-781 A.D.) whose envoy Amoghavajra, a Mahayana teacher of great repute arrived in China in 742 A.D. Near to the temple is the Nithupathpana Tank which is said to be constructed by King Vasaba (67–111 AD). The temple was repaired later by King Vijayabhahu I (1055–1110 AD).
