Kythira, travel guide: Village Avlemonas with Venetian fortress / observatory (by drone camera).
Avlemonas is one of the most beautiful villages on the island, owing to the small inlets with their emerald-green crystal-clear waters. The short walks on cobblestone paths around the village are one of the best attractions for couples in love. Walking up to the Venetian fortress-observatory, witnessing the romantic atmosphere is the life time experience. Near Avlemonas lies the beach of Paleopolis, one of the biggest and most beautiful on the island. The village is quite remote and serves as a self-sustaining destination.

GREECE: EXPLORING a ruined VENETIAN CASTLE, island of ASTYPALAIA ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of Astypalaia in the Aegean Sea and let's visit The Venetian Castle in Chora (the main town). The Castle is a wonderful sight to see placed royally on top of the hill and made with black stones that shows a strange contrast with the white-walled cluster of houses around it. The castle's history is entwined with the power struggle among the Venetians, Byzantine and the Turk rulers. The castle was constructed by John Querini, a noble Venetian family who had taken over the rule of Astypalea Island after the siege of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204. It was built as a shelter against pirates and other enemies. In 1310, John Quirini II renovated and modified the castle to a great extent. The Venetians ruled from the castle for more than 300 years and each ruler had made some or other modifications to the imposing structure.
Astypalaia, is a Greek island with 1,334 residents. It belongs to the Dodecanese, an archipelago of twelve major islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The island is 18 kilometres long, 13 kilometres wide at the most, and covers an area of 97 km².
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Apeiranthos: The Greek Island Village with Venetian Castles
Apeiranthos is a beautiful mountain village of Naxos seemingly untouched by time, still bearing as it does the marks of the Venetian era. From afar, Apeiranthos looks like a fortress, perched at the foot of Fanari mountain almost 26 kilometers (16 miles) from Chora, the main town of the island. It was built by Cretans in the 9th century, with its inhabitants being a mix of people from Crete and Asia Minor. It is said that there was a Naxos, or Axos, in ancient times in Crete, but this is not a c...

Lose yourself in Greece islands Kythira (Cythera)
Kythira (Cythera) is an island in Greece situated
opposite the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is one of the seven main Ionian Islands, although it is distant from the main group.
The island is located between the Greek mainland and Crete, and from ancient times until the mid 19th century was a crossroads of merchants, sailors, and conquerors. As such, it has had a long and varied history and has been influenced by many civilisations and cultures. This is reflected in its architecture (a blend of traditional, Aegean and Venetian elements), as well as the traditions and customs, influenced by centuries of coexistence of the Greek, Venetian, and Ottoman cultures.
Must see on Kythira ( famous tourist spots) :Church of Agios Georgios, the castle of Kythira, cave in islet Hytra, Melidoni beach, Kaladi beach, Paleopoli Beach, monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, gold Icon of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, Church of Agia Despoina, winery in Martesakia (Pitsinianika), Fonisa waterfall at Mylopotamos Cythera, Katouni bridge (19th century)...

Assos ,Venetian castle - Kefalonia, amazing aerial HD video 2017
The peninsula of Assos dominates in the landscape – with the clear blue sea, of course. It is combined with the rest of the island by a narrow strip of land, a sandy ‘neck’ as is mentioned, on which today has built a part of the village. It has double peak with an altitude of 154 meters, on which was built during the Venetian period the Castle of Assos and steep vertical cliffs that drop to the sea, especially those located in the back, towards the sea. On the opposite coast of the island is formed a bay that home the sheltered harbor of Assos.
The Venetian Castle of Assos was one of the great castles of the era, along with that of St. George. As the distance of 30 kilometers that separate it from Argostoli is considered long for an island, while the route passes through the mountains of Kefalonia, the difficult connection with the capital prevented the creation of a strong center here. It was used as a prison and now remains only its ruins.

Kythira Island is the alternative side of the Ionian Islands, Greece. Officially a member of the Ionian cluster, Kythira is located right below the Peloponnese and offers a remarkable natural beauty and sightseeing attractions, along with wondrous beaches…in brief some of the best places to visit in Greece.
1) Platia Ammos is the village and the beach on the northern part of the island. The combination of pebbles and sand beach and the picturesque village surrounding is the perfect place to relax. After swimming near by village’s ouzo taverns and restaurants offers food or drink.
2) Piatsa Beach is the part of longest beach on Kythira, Palaiopolis. This beach is on the southern side of island and on the clear day it is possible to see mountains of Crete
3) Limnionas Beach is located on the west side of island. Directly opposite the beach are the Panaghia islands, two small islets in front of Limnionas bay and just below the Monastery of Panaghia Mirtidiotissa, which they were named after! In Limnionas you can see the traditional houses used by fishermen for shelter.
4) Lagada Beach: Just next to the beach of Lorentzos, at the end of the Paleochora canyon ( you’ll find Kakia Lagada. During the winter months, a large lake is created just behind the beach by the water coming from the gorge. The beach has large pebbles, but this doesn’t seem to bother the tourists who prefer to swim in a tranquil environment such as this one.
5) Kombonada Beach (or Komponada beach Kythera): a beach with big white pebbles located on the east side of the island in between Palaiopolis and Fyri Ammos (Kalamos). The surrounding landscape is very beautiful. Accessible through an asphalt road from the direction Livadi/ Karvounades.
6) Fourni Beach: located on the northeast side of the island and accessible through a dirt road between Karavas and Platia Ammos. In the summer there is a cantina which serves drinks and nice food and sometimes there is live music in the evening.
7) Diakofti beach Kythira: Anyone who visits the beach Diakofti will be confused and wonder if they are in some exotic island! The water is shallow and turquoise and the color of the sand is white. Located on the northeast side of the island, in one of the most beautiful sites of Kythera next to the harbor, it is an ideal beach for young children because of its depth. In the taverns by the seaside you can taste fresh fish, seafood and traditional Greek cuisine. A few meters away from the harbor you can also see the shipwreck that took place a few years ago and has become one of the island’s modern exhibits.
8) Agios Nikolaos: The majestic bay of Agios Nikolaos is located 20 km north of Chora, the capital of Kythira and close to the popular village of Avlemonas and Moudari lighthouse. It is a small beach with white pebbles and crystalline waters. The beach is quite secluded and rocky with no tourist facilities. Here you have the chance to spend a peaceful and relaxing day with your friends and family. This natural environment is even suitable for the children. The bay offers breathtaking sunset views. The beach is accessed through a dirt road.

1) The gorge of Kakia Langada starts at the village of Trifillianika and passes by the ruined Byzantine town of Paleochora. Paleochora, with its 13th century buildings, was the island’s Byzantine capital and is located in the northernmost part of a steep cliff set in the middle of the canyon. The gorge ends on the beach of Kakia Langada, where the famous pirate Hayreddin Barbarossa started his invasion, adjacent to Lorenzo beach in Agia Pelagia.
For adventurous nature lovers, it is possible organize a unique canyoning tour through Kakia Lagada – the Evil Gorge. In springtime and after the first rainfall in autumn, small lakes form and, during the summer, the gorge is without water, but still challenging. The canyoning tour makes your holiday on Kythira complete.
2) The stone bridge in Katouni is one of the most impressive monuments of Kythera. It was built during the period of British rule and is the largest stone bridge in Greece. Its length reaches 110m, it is 15m long and 6m wide. It is characteristically based on 13 arches and 12 wickets in absolute symmetry! Designed and supervised by Macfale himself, the bridge was completed in 1826 as part of the road connecting the capital with Avlemonas, the biggest British engineering project in Kythera. Due to its exceptional architecture the bridge can hold more weight than originally planned. Legend has it that Macfale, the island's British governor, fell in love with a girl from Katouni village and decided to build the bridge near her house in order to see her daily, while supervising the project.
3) Located west in Kythira, in the village of Mylopotamos Kato Chora. Is Venetian castle built in 1565 because of its strategic position from to protect the villagers from the pirates. Inside numbered many homes and churches and was inhabited until the 50's. A few of them survive today, some in good condition, which creates to many visitors a sense of transportation in the past. Inside the castle there are 9 churches, excellent architecture belonging to the 16th to 17th century, and is Panagia Mesosporitissa, the Prophet Elijah, St. Athanasius, St. Ioannis the Theologian, Saint Anargyroi, St. Nicholas, St. John the Baptist, and St. Demetrius. The sunset from the west side of the castle is considered as the most beautiful of Kythira overlooking
4) Anyone who visits the beach Diakofti will be confused and wonder if they are in some exotic island!
5) The village of Agia Pelagia started its development in the 1980s, and for several years was the island’s main harbor. Today, it is a village specifically geared towards tourism, with many good hotels, restaurants and shops. Along the seaside and close to many beaches, Agia Pelagia is one of the best choices for visitors. Recommended visits include the beaches of Lorentzo, Lagada, Firi Ammos (of Agia Pelagia), the Cave of Saint Sophia (one of three caves with the same name on the island) with an area of more than 120 m² full of stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the Cave of Venus in the small ravine of Galani.
6) Perhaps the most beautiful village of Kythera. Set on the eastern part of the island, Avlemonas is a coastal village with picturesque bays. There you’ll find many rooms to let, restaurants and cafes while the small swimming pool is fascinating for young and older kids! Swimming and diving, walking up to the Venetian fortress-observatory, witnessing the romantic atmosphere; it is no coincidence that those who visited the island of Kythera talk to friends first and foremost about the beauty of Avlemonas. Don’t forget to see the building with the sundial in the creek behind the village. Near Avlemonas lies the beach of Paleopolis, one of the biggest and most beautiful on the island.
