Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Arsenale di Venezia
Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Arsenale di Venezia
The Venetian Arsenal is a complex of former shipyards and armories clustered together in the city of Venice in northern Italy. Owned by the state, the Arsenal was responsible for the bulk of the Venetian republic's naval power during the middle part of the second millennium AD. It was one of the earliest large-scale industrial enterprises in history.
Construction of the Arsenal began around 1104, during Venice's republican era. It became the largest industrial complex in Europe before the Industrial Revolution, spanning an area of about 45 hectares (110 acres), or about fifteen percent of Venice. Surrounded by a 2-mile (3.2 km) rampart, laborers and shipbuilders regularly worked within the Arsenal, building ships that sailed from the city's port. With high walls shielding the Arsenal from public view and guards protecting its perimeter, different areas of the Arsenal each produced a particular prefabricated ship part or other maritime implement, such as munitions, rope, and rigging. These parts could then be assembled into a ship in as little as one day. An exclusive forest owned by the Arsenal navy, in the Montello hills area of Veneto, provided the Arsenal's wood supply.
The Arsenal produced the majority of Venice's maritime trading vessels, which generated much of the city's economic wealth and power, lasting until the fall of the republic to Napoleon's conquest of the area in 1797. It is located in the Castello district of Venice, and it is now owned by the state.
The Arsenal's main gate, the Porta Magna, was built around 1460 and was the first Classical revival structure built in Venice. It was perhaps built by Antonio Gambello from a design by Jacopo Bellini. Two lions taken from Greece situated beside it were added in 1687. One of the lions, known as the Piraeus Lion, has runic defacements carved in it by invading Scandinavian mercenaries during the 11th century.
In the late 16th century, the Arsenal's designers experimented with larger ships as platforms for heavy naval guns. The largest was the galleass, already used at the Battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman Turks, and developed from the old merchanting great galley. It was huge, propelled by both sails and oars, with guns mounted on wheeled carriages along the sides in the modern fashion. It was slow and unwieldy in battle, however, and few were ever built. The galleon, also developed at the Arsenal, was an armed sailing ship, a slimmer version of the merchant round ship. It was useful in major naval battles, but not in the small bays and off the extensive lee shores of the Dalmatian coast.
Significant parts of the Arsenal were destroyed under Napoleonic rule, and later rebuilt to enable the Arsenal's present use as a naval base. It is also used as a research center and an exhibition venue during the Venice Biennale, and is home to a historic boat preservation center.

Cruise Ship Passengers To Pay $12 Admission Tax To Enter Venice Italy
Cruise Ship Passengers To Pay $12 Admission Tax To Enter Venice Italy The city fathers of Venice Italy have passed a new tax to be implemented on day visitors of $12 per day. The tax is in response to the fact that many cruise ship visitors to Venice do not spend a lot of money in the 4 to 6 hours they visit the city. Selfies just don't generate cash for the city and residents do not enjoy seeing massive cruise ships in the canals. #carnivalnews #royalcaribbeannews #norwegiannews #celebritynews #princessnews #hollandamericanews #cunardnews #mscnews #vikingnews #disneynews #seabournnews #cruiseshipnews #venicecruise #travellingwithbruce #veniceitaly

Lighting revives Tintoretto’s art - Scuola Grande di S. Rocco, Venice
More info:
The main objectives of the new lighting system designed by the architect Alberto Pasetti Bombardella, are to conserve the artworks, while offering a new experience of them that includes the chance to enjoy an overall view of the room. To achieve this, the project was divided into two macro spheres of intervention: Tintoretto’s great paintings plus the wooden and stone artworks, on one hand, and the hall’s architecture and decorations on the other.
The Scuola di San Rocco played an important role in the history of the city of Venice, especially for the care it offered the sick during epidemics. From the fourteenth century onwards, when the plague struck, the Venetians prayed to San Rocco (St. Roch). The Confraternity and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was established in 1478. In 1484 Venice was hit by a severe outbreak of the plague and this led to the idea of bringing the remains of St Roch to the city from Voghera where they were said to have been buried.
During the sixteenth century, the Scuola di San Rocco cemented its prestige by giving commissions to some of the great masters, such as Jacopo Robusti - better known as Tintoretto - who worked in the School between 1564 and 1588.

Venice Carnival.wmv
Soundtrack : Il Carnevale di Venezia by Carmelo Pellitteri from Taormina -
Carnival started as a time for celebration and expression throughout the classes, as wearing masks hid any form of identity between social classes. Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival; traditionally people were allowed to wear them between the festival of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Day, December 26) and the start of the carnival season and midnight of Shrove Tuesday. They have always been around Venice. As masks were also allowed on Ascension and from October 5 to Christmas, people could spend a large proportion of the year in disguise. Maskmakers (mascherari) enjoyed a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild.
Venetian masks can be made in leather or with the original glass technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration and often had a symbolic and practical function.Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.
