Art Trip: Venice Biennale | The Art Assignment | PBS Digital Studios
Behold the 2017 Venice Biennale. Called the olympics of the art world, the exhibition invades historic (and tourist clogged) Venice, Italy, every two years, and has since 1895. Contemporary art abounds, with installations and exhibitions occupying the city's Giardini and Arsenale, as well as art venues throughout the city. And yes, we ate plenty of gelato and rode in a gondola.

But while everyone was talking about the art at the Biennale, we went to Venice few months before the official opening to meet artists, curators, and producers, and to understand how such a massive art event is made, as well as its impact on the city and its citizens.

Hightlights from the 2013 La Biennale in Venice, Italy
ummer in Venice means torrid temperatures and sweaty tourists. Book a fall visit instead when the days are crisp but sun-filled, the crowds dissipate, and lines to the Biennale are much more manageable. This year's highlights include an installation by Ai Wei Wei; Marc Quinn sculptures on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore; works by Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies; and more. Italy: Capsized migrant ship exhibited at Venice Biennale

The remains of a Libyan fishing vessel that sank in the Mediterranean with around 800 migrants on board in 2015 arrived in Venice on Monday and was seen on display on Friday. It is being exhibited at the 58th Venice Biennale which is opening this week.
The vessel was carrying around 800 migrants when it hit a Portuguese cargo ship overnight on April 18, 2015 and quickly sank between Libya and the Italian island of Lampedusa. Almost all of those on board were left trapped in the ship's hold and only 28 survived the disaster, which was the deadliest migrant shipwreck in the Mediterranean in the period.
It was retrieved from the seabed in 2016 at the request of the Italian government led by former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, and brought to Venice on Monday.
The exhibited ship has been dubbed Barca Nostra or Our Ship by Swiss artist Christoph Buchel, who aims to turn the wreckage into a symbol of the migrants' tragedy in the Mediterranean. He received permission from a group of survivors to display the vessel in this manner.
I did not have an opinion. I thought it was necrophilia. But now that I've seen it, I think people can understand what a migrant boat really is. Not just as when you see them on television, where they look small. This was big and it was full of people, said Venice resident Maria Teresa Ruggero.
Barca Nostra will be part of the International Art Exhibition dubbed “May You Live In Interesting Times, which will run from May 11 to November 24 this year in Venice.

The Swiss Pavilion has been awarded the Golden Lion for best national participation at 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. The exhibition is entitled “Svizzera 240: House Tour” and focuses on the unfurnished interior of contemporary housing by celebrating a peculiar form of architectural representation — the «house tour». The installation has been conceived by the architects Alessandro Bosshard, Li Tavor, Matthew van der Ploeg and Ani Vihervaara. VernissageTV had the chance to speak with two of the architects, Alessandro Bosshard and Li Tavor, who talk about the installation and the inspiration and ideas behind it.

Venice Art Biennale 2013, Giardini
The Encyclopedic Palace (Il Palazzo Enciclopedico) is the title of the Venice Biennale's 55th International Art Exhibition that runs from June 1st to November 24th, 2013. The event takes place in Venice (Italy) at the Giardini and at the Arsenale, as well as in various venues of the city. The main exhibition is curated by Massimiliano Gioni. The title The Encyclopedic Palace (Il Palazzo Enciclopedico) refers to a project by Italo-American self-taught artist Marino Auriti who in 1955 filed a design with the US Patent office depicting his Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace), an imaginary museum that was meant to house all worldly knowledge. Although Marino Auriti's plan was never carried out, the dream of universal, all-embracing knowledge crops up throughout history, as one that eccentrics like Auriti share with many other artists, writers, scientists, and prophets who have tried -- often in vain -- to fashion an image of the world that will capture its infinite variety and richness. (Massimiliano Gioni).
Thus, the main exhibition in the Biennale's Giardini and Arsenale brings together the work of artists such as Carl Gustav Jung, Rudolf Steiner, Oliver Croy and Oliver Elser, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Eva Kotátková, Diego Perrone, and Imran Qureshi at the Central Pavilion in the Giardini, and Marino Auriti, Yüksel Arslan, Hans Josephsohn, Phyllida Barlow, Steve McQueen, Danh Vo, R. Crumb, Pawel Althamer, Miroslaw Balka, George Condo, Paul McCarthy, Wade Guyton, Dieter Roth, and many others at the Arsenale.
This video provides you with at walkthrough of the exhibition at the Central Pavilion. More videos covering the Biennale will be available soon.
