Kidnapped in Venice
The first sense that Venice isn't your usual travel destination is trying to get there. If you arrive by airline, train, bus, car or on foot ... you need to take a watercraft into the town. That can cost as little as 20 euros on the public ferry to as much as 150 euros by Vaporetto (private water taxi). Maybe the only exception are cruise ships that overwhelm the Grand Canal with their sheer size ... and the city with their sheer quantity of tee-shirt buying tourists.
Once in town ... the best way to get around is on foot. In fact getting lost in Venice is really a treat because you'll find things you never imagined.
If you want to stay at the most popular luxury hotel, book at The Danielli. Being popular means that at check-in there could be a line (as it was for me of 20 minutes). It also means an expensive small room for $700 per night with no view but a noisy alleyway. But the breakfast is one of the best and fortunately was included it that celestial price.
Walking will always bring you to bridges in Venice. The most famous is the Rialto Bridge which was the first bridge to cross the Grand Canal and built between 1588 and 1591. The bridge is lined with tourist shops selling glass, art, jewelry and clothing both good and trashy. At Piazza San Marco, the shops are higher quality and the sheer size of the Piazza is constantly impressive. I missed the regular flooding by just a week -- but knee-high tables were strewn around the piazza, ready for the water to rise.
At the Cafe Florian, which opened in 1720, a five piece orchestra played to the cafe crowd. After a few high priced drinks... its time to look for a high priced meal and nowhere empties the wallet faster that Harry's Bar - opened by Giusppe Cipriani in 1931. A popular haunt for Noel Coward, Charlie Chaplin, Somerset Maughan, Orson Welles, Truman Capote, and George Braque -- it still is packed with the beautiful people
But this isn't a story about fine dining, pricy pasta or venerable vino. This is a story about a kidnapping of sorts. It started out innocently enough. I asked the concierge at the Danielli about visiting the island of Murano to see some glass blowing. He said that there are vaporettos that go from the hotel to the island free of charge every hour. So we boarded this free taxi to Murano along with two other hotel guests. We were dropped off in front of the Schiavon glass blowing studio with a store filled with expensive glassware. We watched the glass blowing artist create pieces in the old traditional Murano style. With almost a magician's slight of hand we watched as he transformed a molting piece of glass into a prancing glass horse. It was beautiful, and they wouldn't even sell it. But we all bought a few things of a more pricy and sophisticated nature and we were told that we should take the last vaporetto back to Venice that departs from the store at noon. Boarding that Vaporetto, instead of Venice, we were taken to Burano, an island further from Venice. Met at the water taxi by a woman representing a company that makes very pricy lacework. The town is known for its brightly colored buildings... that stood out even in the pouring rain. We watched the handiwork of the lace-workers and even visited the store's lace museum with pieces used by royalty - but neither we nor the other hotel guests bought anything. At that point we were on our own. No more free Vaporetti, no transport back to Venice. There we were on rainy Burano stuck -- kidnapped with a ransom to get us back to Venice. Eventually we bit the bullet and took a water taxi back to the Danielli that cost 130 euros.
So traveler beware ... Venice is a fascinating city but it comes at a price. And for the unsuspecting traveler ... that price can feel like a King's ransom.

慢遊義大利-威尼斯(Venice)

Venice - Venezia Canal Grande
travelshot by waterbus in Venice, Canal Grande. Venice is unique in the world: an architectural tour-de-force built on 118 islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea. Old documents show the city was founded as long ago as 421.
The Grand Canal (Canal Grande - Canalasso) is the major waterway in the city of Venice. Crowded by water buses (public transport), water taxis and gondola, the 3,800 m long canal crosses the central districts or sestieri of Venice. It is, 30-90 m wide, with an average depth of five meters.

2015 Venice Vacation
We arrived one day early in Venice before starting our 12-day Mediterranean cruise on the M.S. Nieuw Amsterdam with Holland America Lines. We were fortunate to find our the Hotel Belle Arti, which is located near the Accademia Bridge for six reasons (1) it was a generally clean and neat establishment (2) the price was reasonable (3) the complimentary breakfast was superior to many I’ve had in American hotels and motels (4) It was located maybe less than a hundred yards from the Zattere Vaporetto (Water Taxi) Station, where we arrived from the Venice Marco Polo Airport (5) It was equally close to the Accademia Bridge, with about a 20 minute walk to St. Mark’s Square (6) The hotel’s rating was relatively high among the other hotels in its class and price range. Just another note: we took the Alilaguna Vaporetto Blue Line, which took about 1 ½ hours from the airport to take advantage of the scenery in the Venice Lagoon, whereas the alternative is to take a half-hour shuttle bus to the Cruise Terminal and transfer onto the same Vaporetto route, which would make Zattere just one or two stops away.
On the evening after checking in, we took a sunset gondola ride, which typically costs 100 € vs. the standard 80 € during the day. I strongly recommend this because in daytime, it’s not unfamiliar to see canals full of other gondolas, which just ruins the experience and there’s just something different about seeing this city at dusk, which was almost spiritual.
We then strolled towards St. Mark’s Square. Originally I just wanted to grab inexpensive pizza in the endless holes-in-the-wall restaurants lining the arterial alleyways of St. Mark’s but we ended up in the Square for a late dinner at was at Caffe Quadri, which has been in business since 1638. They had an orchestra to add to the ambiance and though we paid through the nose, it was well worth it for our family of four for our first magical night in Venice.
The next day, we checked out and proceeded to the Cruise Terminal, which was just one stop away. Once we completed the elaborate check-in process on our ship, we went out again to St. Mark’s, where we further explored up to the Rialto Bridge and then returned to the ship by 6 p.m. Though it was an abbreviated stay, it was well spent and very satisfying, so that I we didn’t feel that an additional day or two would have made a large difference in our experience.

I found this movie and I telecined it again. But this time I used a Sony VCR4 telecine box to have a better picture quality. Shot entirely on Super 8. Enjoy watching Venice during that era.
George Clooney leads a star studded parade of boats to Venice wedding
The world's most famous bachelor, George Clooney, broke a vow to remain single on Saturday and married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin during a weekend of lavish celebrations in Venice
Hollywood's most-eligible bachelor George Clooney and human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin were married Saturday in a private ceremony in Venice, Italy.
Clooney led a parade of boats across the Venice lagoon and down the Grand Canal as he headed to his wedding festivities at the Aman Hotel.
Dozens of water taxis with paparazzi, journalists and camera crews buzzed around his water taxi as he slowly moved across the lagoon. Unexpectedly a giant cruise ship and then a ferry boat blocked the way.
Clooney standing at the front of his taxi remained calm waving at the photographers and the bustled around his boat crossing in front and around making the lagoon a wavy.
Hundreds of people lined the Accademia Bridge to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood star yelling George George -- he waved to them and they cheered in glee.
Finally arriving at the Aman Hotel, George climbed out of the water taxi, waved to the crowd, rubbed his hands together as though excited to start the evening and disappeared inside.
A procession of a dozen that brought guests including Cindy Crawford, her husband Randy Gerber, Bill Murray, Matt Damon and Bono from the five-star Cipriani hotel opposite St. Mark's Square up the Grand Canal to the luxury Aman Hotel. Crawford wore a purple floor-length halter dress; the men were all dressed in tuxedos.
There were no signs of his bride, human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, who was last seen publicly on Friday riding a water-taxi down the Grand Canal with Clooney's arm resting comfortably around her. The bride, wearing a bold black-and-white striped Dolce & Gabbana dress, beamed.
Clooney, 53, had long vowed he would never marry again following his 1989-93 marriage to Talia Balsam. He dated a series of models and actresses that made his love life tabloid fodder, until meeting his match in Alamuddin, 36.
Venice is perhaps a natural setting for Clooney's wedding. The star owns a villa on Lake Como north of Milan, feels at home in Italy and is a frequent visitor to Venice, often to promote his films at the Venice Film Festival.

Few cities can claim such precious artistic and historical heritage as Venice. This unique city with it's magical, magnificent scenery is not only beautiful; it is a real miracle of creative genius: a city built on mud, sand, and slime of a complex and inhospitable country.
The biggest attraction is the beautiful Venice is the architecture, which is enhanced by the ancient canals that surround it. The city is just like Piazza San Marco and St. Mark's Basilica. Mark is home to the Gothic masterpiece Doge's Palace. These pink and white marble buildings need to be seen in the body to be fully appreciated. Not only is it a breathtaking example of Italian architecture, but it is also the center of Venice Carnival celebrations every year.
Italy is an amazing city, well worth visiting and exploring. Don't - forget to explore outside the main island of Venice. There are great places to visit around Venice like the Murano glass factories.
