Venugopal Swamy Temple KRS Backwater Mandya tourism Karnataka tourism. The Venugopala Swamy Temple was built in the 12th century AD around the same time as the Chennakesava Temple of Somanathapura, Mysore district. The new Venugopala Swamy Temple is located at Hosa Kannambadi, Near Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Mandya District, here a peninsula is formed by the backwaters of the KRS dam. It is one of the examples of Hoysala architecture in Karnataka. The original Venugopala Swamy Temple complex was located in the village of Kannambadi.
The Krishna Raja Sagara dam project was conceived by Sir M.Visvesvaraya in 1909. The KRS Dam project caused the submersion of the village of Kannambadi and other surrounding settlements. The then king of Mysore, Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV ordered the construction of a new village for the residents of Kannambadi and aptly named it Hosa Kannambadi meaning New Kannambadi. The main idol of Venugopalaswamy, Lord Krishna playing on flute as a cow-herd, was shifted to a new temple in the rehabilitated village before the submersion.
After the KRS dam construction, the ancient stone carved temples on the banks of river Kaveri such as Venugopala Swamy temple complex and 2 other temples namely Kenneshwara (Ishwara) temple and Kalamma (A local deity) temple had to be abandoned. By 1930, the first phase of the dam was completed and all three temples were submerged. However, the temple used to resurface whenever the water levels in the reservoir dropped.
For more than 70 years the temple lay underwater. Later the Khoday Foundation under the guidance of liquor baron and philanthropist Mr. Sri Hari Khoday took up the task of relocating and restoring the temple. Initial plan was to shift the entire complex to Madhuvana Park in Mysore. However, protests from the villagers of Hosa Kannambadi convinced the foundation to shift it to a place near the rehabilitated village. The cost of the project was estimated to be around ₹ 2.5 crore. The restoration and relocation began in May 2003 and was completed in 2011. Around the year 2004 a mammoth work started to replant the temple, thanks to an entrepreneur philanthropist. Originally the new location planned was at Madhuvana, a locality close to the Mysore city center. But due to the sensitivity of the Hosa Kannambadi villagers, a new site was found close to the village.
The relocated temple is in the original shape and design and the design was computerised and each stone was identified with numbers for relocating them in the same architectural style. The group of architects shot the original temple on video, took over 16,000 photographs, and marked each and every slab used in the construction of the original temple. Each and every temple stone of the ancient stone carved temple on the backwaters of KRS Dam was removed and reconstructed at Hosa Kannambadi with trained artisans and sculptors, with half a dozen experts from Tamil Nadu also involved in the reconstruction. Originally, the temple complex was huge with an area of 50 acres.
The Kannada Movie Chandra chakori's song Kuhu Kuhu Kogile was shot at the ancient stone carved submerged Venugopala swamy temple in the KRS Backwaters.
The temple is located 9 km from Brindavan Gardens, 30 km from Mysuru and 150 kms from Bangalore.

Submerged Venugopala Swamy temple becomes a living monument at KRS backwaters - Star of Mysore
If devotees cannot go to the temple, the temple goes to devotees ! This is what happened at Krishna Raja Sagara. The 12th century Venugopala Swamy Temple, which remained submerged when the KRS was full and resurfaced when the water level reached an all time low, was shifted to the nearby Hosa Kannambadi village, thanks to liquor baron and philanthropist late Sri Hari Khoday who took up this gigantic task as a Khoday Foundation Project. Today, the temple, which is waiting for inauguration, has become a major tourist attraction.

Mysore KRS Backwaters | Sri Venugopala Swami Temple | One More Hidden Destination in Mysore- 2019
Lord Venugopala Swamy Temple is found at Hosakannambadi, once a village, near Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS). It was built by kings of Hoysala dynasty in 12th century AD
According to historical records the temple complex was in a vast area of 50 acres of land.
It was Sir M Visweswaraiah that planned to build KRS dam across Cauvery River at the village Kannambadi, in 1909, when he was Diwan of Mysore Maharaja. As a consequence large extent of land including Kannambadi village and temples were submerged in waters. At the direction of then Maharaja Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV the new village ‘Hosakannambadi’ came up, the residents were all shifted to new camp. However this beautiful structure could not be shifted nor could such a structure be constructed as such only certain idols of Gods in this and other temples were shifted to new temples built in the new village. In the process old village Kannambadi was inundated underwater by 1930.But we could yet see the temple whenever water level in the reservoir come down or receded. Such a rare event happened during 2000s, which were drought years. The whole of the temple could be seen in those days. Later the task of relocation and restoration of that temple near the rehabilitated village, close to original site, took place. In order to construct the new temple as it was by using the very same stones of the original temple, the Engineers and Architects have taken more than 16,000 photographs, and marked each and every slab used in original structure. They made sincere efforts successfully by marking each and every temple-stone and after removing them used and reconstructed at Hosakannambadi with trained artisans. The talented sculptors who were experts in temple construction from Tamil Nadu were involved in this task.
Their task was fulfilled during December 2011, when the temple restoration was completed. It became a tourist attraction in Mysore.
