A portion of a promotional film touting the heat hardiness of the brand new 1936 Chevrolet, as it totes a heavy load up the steep 9 mile hill between Clarkdale and Jerome, Arizona. Special thanks to Drake Meinke from Clarkdale's Arizona Copper Art Museum for finding this film.

A Visit to the Verde Canyon Railroad
On 4-28-19, I visited the Verde Canyon Railroad, a small tourist line in Clarkdale, AZ. I arrived just as the day's run was returning to the depot from its four hour round trip to Perkinsville and back. Afterward, I was able to watch the crew perform some switching operations. Leading the way were two vintage locomotives that were both built in the 1950s. One is an ex Southern Pacific GP9r and the other (with the chop nose) is an ex Santa Fe GP7u. Both are rebuilt/upgraded variants of the EMD GP9 and GP7 respectively. These are some of my favorite engines of all time, and this was a real treat to see some of these vintage workhorses still in everyday service after 60 plus years in person and up close. I was surprised that these engines were on this run. Normally two ex Alaska Railroad FP7s are used. The Verde Canyon Railroad is owned and operated by the Arizona Central Railroad, who uses their equipment on these trains. This shortlines' engine fleet consists of two GP9s, the one GP7 that is seen in this video, and the two FP7s normally used for running the excursions. While the FP7s are used for the tourist line, the GP7 and GP9s are used for the freight portion, which is mainly hauling inbound coal to and outbound cement from the nearby Phoenix Cement Company to the BNSF interchange at Drake 37 miles away. Other items of interest on the property are also highlighted in this video. Some of the passenger cars in the shown consist are ex Santa Fe cars that were once used on the Super Chief and El Capitan. The generator car in the consist as well as the nearby museum are both converted from former WWII era troop sleeper cars. I am planning to return here sometime in the near future to ride this train, possibly doing a cab ride in the engine if I can find a suitable time slot that isn't sold out. When that happens, I will film a more detailed follow up to this video. Sorry for the shakey camera. This was all filmed on my phone.

Verde Canyon Railroad
A slow train ride with Great Outdoors on the Verde Canyon Railroad.
01:45 - Slag/tailings from copper mining, which was hot and liquid when it was dumped, and has hardened into a material that is almost impossible to break up.
02:45 - Traveling next to a wall of slag, allowing you to see its cross section.
15:32 - Bald eagles - no, you can't make out their details in this video.
18:50 - Tunnel where you can hear good rail screeching in the non-music version.
20:36 - Perkinsville.
21:24 - Locomotives switching ends.
24:15 - There's a boy over there (a Perkinsville resident, I'm sure) who is hallooing the train. You can only hear this in the non-music version, of course, and even there it doesn't come through as impressively as it did in real life. This kid has obviously had a lot of practice at hallooing so loudly that everyone on the train can hear it and turn to look to see what sort of banshee that was.
28:14 - The tunnel again.
29:28 - There's an eagle's nest up there, which was really hard to make out, even though I could see the ledge where it had to be - can't see it at all in this video, but, ya know, it's there nonetheless.
32:38 - Geology happens, two kinds of rock interfacing.
35:46 - Slag again.
36:25 - The research facility where they are trying to come up with an economical way to break up the slag so they can extract the little bit of gold.

Verde Canyon Railroad Train Ride - Drive to Ride - Ep 24
One of the really striking things about Arizona are the red rock formations in North-Central Arizona and people flock to places like the Grand Canyon and Sedona to see them.
Another place to see these beautiful mountains and formations is the Verde Canyon - but it isn't readily accessible except by the Verde Canyon Railroad leaving from Clarkville near Cottonwood, Arizona.
This is a real treat of a train ride because each seating car has it's own open car; so you can ride for a while in air conditioned comfort and then go outside onto the Observation Car to see the beautiful sights, unobstructed by windows. Each Observation Car has a guide/narrator who relates the history of the trains, mines, ranches, river, and people of the Canyon.
The train leaves Clarkville and travels to the ghost town of Perkinsville where it stops, the engines move to the other end of the train, and returns to Clarkville. The trip is about 4 hours total.
As the train leaves Clarkville, you see the reason the tracks were laid to start with: to bring copper ore down from Jerome, AZ to the smelter. From there, the train passes grasslands for a short distance until it comes alongside the beautiful Verde River and enters the Canyon. Time passes quickly and you arrive in Perkinsville, which still has a few structures and the old Train Depot which appeared in the movie How the West Was Won many years ago.
We won't attempt to relate all that we got to see on this trip. We will just share a few minutes of the train ride to give you a taste of the scenery.
