The Runner Ducks of Vergenoegd Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa
On the far side of the world, at a unique family winery, ducks are on patrol.
They’re on the lookout for tasty treats like snails and bugs — anything that could jeopardize a good wine harvest.
These Indian runner ducks, totaling over 1,200, help the Vergenoegd Wine Estate keep a lid on pests.
The ducks have been working this land since 1984 and have helped the estate earn the World Wildlife Fund’s biodiversity certification.
They have a parade everyday, so “duck” into the winery the next time you’re in South Africa.

Vergenoegd Wine Estate Duck Parade
The Duck run at Vergenoegd Wine Estate. Today, 3 September was the first Duck run this season!
The Ducks are organic pest controllers for Vergenoegd Wines.
They barely make any sound, with only the females quacking.
The Ducks are Indian runner ducks and they are exceptional, they do not waddle they stand erect and they run!
The Indian runner ducks also do not make a nest they lay their eggs on the run, :) Indian runner ducks at vergenoegd are more like kids than animals, but, saying that, they are hard working animals.
The vineyards are being kept free from any slugs, snails or pests by around 800 ducks, depending on the time of the season.
Spending the day at Vergenoegd Wine Estate is a bonus in the way that they have a market on Saturday and you could spend a couple of hours at the Estate.
The Wine Estate is very kid friendly and there are a couple of activities that the kids can enjoy, there is even a mini train that runs often for the kids to experience e the while vineyard as well as the farm!
I will definitely go to Vergenoegd Wine Estate again!

The Duck Parade
Truly unique. Vergenoegd Estate. A thousand Indian Runner Ducks take care of the bugs and snails in the vineyards, reducing the need for pesticides and insecticides. It's the harvest now so the working ducks are on holiday, and heading for the lake for a swim and a splash.
