Damien Hirst's 'Verity' statue divides Devon town
'Verity', a controversial 65ft statue of a pregnant woman by artist Damien Hirst, is unveiled in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, Devon, and is greeted with a mixed reception by residents.
Hundreds of residents looked with a mixture of emotions today after a sculpture of a huge, naked, heavily pregnant woman with a sword arrived in their seaside town on a flatbed trailer.
It was their first glimpse of the controversial statue by Damien Hirst which has stirred up controversy since he announced plans earlier this year to loan it to Ilfracombe, Devon, until 2032.
The council has received more than 100 complaints from locals who have described the work of art as obscene and disgusting.
It is now being kept in a temporary compound on site at the entrance to the harbour while contractors continue to work on the sculpture.
It is understood the statue will be hoisted into place on October 17-18, dependent on weather conditions.

edit: I notice my video has received a 'dislike' ; the first in my short Youtube career! If there is something you don't like about the way I have made this video then by all means click the dislike button. However if you dislike the sculpture itself as many people do, I would be grateful if you could resist the temptation. But regardless thanks for watching.
The following is a link to my aerial view video of St Nicholas Chapel and Lantern Hill, another famous Ilfracombe landmark.
Filming began shortly after dawn on a glorious early June 2015 morning when there was very little wind. The warm orange light of the morning sun helped to bring out the bronze colour of the statue. You can see the changing tones of the statue as the sun rises in the sky.
The video was shot in full high definition 1080p at 50 fps. Unfortunately Youtube processing results in a significant degradation of the imaging and particularly the finer detail. The quality will also depend on the speed of your internet connection.
Ilfracombe is a lovely victorain seaside town on the North Devon coast looking out towards Swansea and the south coast of Wales. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Damien Hirst's 'Verity' statue divides Devon town
UK: Damien Hirst's Verity causing controversy in Ilfracombe
Internationally renowned British artist, Damien Hirst, has donated his latest work to the North Devon town of Ilfracombe, on 20-year-loan.
Hirst is always one to court controversy and his latest work named Verity, a sword wielding, bronze clad, 20-metre statue of a half dissected pregnant woman, does not disappoint.
It's not going to benefit the people of Illfracombe and i just think it's going to be quite ugly and totally disrespectful, degrading towards women, said Julie Hunt of North Devon Council.
But Rob Lawson the Illfracombe Harbourmaster said he rather likes it:
I find her absolutely awe-inspiring, you know on one side you've got the beautiful, calm, emotional depiction of pending motherhood and on the other side, the rather more intricate and thought provoking human animal, which sustains humankind. And I just think that's fantastic.
Damien Hirst, who himself lives in Illfracombe, called his work a modern allegory of truth and justice.
Councillors who passed the planning application this summer said they hope the statue will boost the economy of the seaside town, as people flock to see it.

Ilfracombe, Verity.....Hector?!
Decided to see how Verity weathered Storm Hector in Ilfracombe last week - battle of the giants! But there she was - still standing. Was glad to see her - I love Verity!
Such a beautiful breezy day - walked along the harbour, past Damien Hirst's restaurant, got an ice cream further up, then round Capstone Hill to see the waves crashing as the tide came in. Flew the kite - little butterfly one! - ended up back at the harbour - great to be a grockle for the day!
it was.... breezy! So apologies for the noise on the video - but it was like that really! I like to keep background noise in videos, sound of the sea, random snippets of conversation going on around me - it's not till I'm editing that I really hear it - anyway - hope you enjoy it! ????☀️????

Damien Hirst Stages Comeback # Monumental Sunken 'Treasures'
After a period of quiet, Damien Hirst has opened a new exhibition of his work in Venice
Damien Hirst has been quiet for a few years now, and his star has dimmed as have his prices. So at the age of 51, it seems it's time for a little bit of reinvention for the British artist.
Hirst has never been short of self-belief. He has never done things by half. So the art world press was in Venice this week to find out what he'd do next.
It fills an unprecedented 5000 square meters of space at the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana on the Grand Canal, buildings owned by the billionaire French art collector and Christie's owner Francois Pinault.
