30 Seconds in Riga - vermanes park
Sit in a park in the beautiful city of Riga, Latvia.
Bastejkalns park
Come and join ''The Celotajs'' take a stroll through Bastejkalns park. Bastejkalns, which is on the site of the former Sand Bastion, is a surviving remnant of Riga's ramparts, which were leveled in the late 1850s. The beautiful gardens, which opened in 1863, were developed by A. Vendt, the architect of Lubeck City gardens. In 1898 the park was redesigned by Georg Kuphalt, Director of Riga City gardens, who built the stone embankments with small cascades and waterfalls to resemble a mountain river. The canal, which is three kilometers long and two meters deep, was originally part of the town defenses and was some 90 meters wide. Both ends of the canal, which was restored and strengthened in 2001, terminate in the Daugava.
As we stroll through Bastejkalns park and its many foot paths, we will come across numerous memorials, monuments, sculptures dedicated to famous political people, arts, writers, sciences conductor, teacher and composer. You will also find the famous sculpture called Peace Dance created by Parsla Zalkalne in 1970, this is a sculpture of three young nude women dancing in a circle. You will also find breathe taking and well maintained flowerbeds and well trimmed lawns. We will even see a replica of a mountain stream that flows from the Bastion to the canal that runs through the parks. There are five reddish memorial stones dedicated to the five Latvians who were killed on the night of 20 January 1991 when the Soviet Black Berets stormed the Latvia Minister of Interior building. These memorial stones are dedicated to Vladimirs Gomanovičs who was a Latvian police lieutenant, to Edijs Reikstinš who was a Latvian student, a similar memorial stone to Raimonds Salminš, whose van was machined-gunned by Soviets in August of the same year, to Sergejs Konoņenko was a police lieutenant, to Andris Slapinš 1949-1991, was a member of the film crew who was documenting, to Gvido Zvaigzne 1958-1991 was a member of the film crew who was documenting the events of 20 January 1991.
On the corner of Brīvības bulvāris and Aspazijas bulvāris we can see the famous The Laima clock has been a meeting place ever since it was erected in 1924. The word laime, which means 'happiness', is the name of the Latvian goddess of human destiny, whose job it is to determine whether ones life will be short or long, fruitful or poverty-stricken, carefree or worrisome, as well as the moment of a person's death.

The idea to create an event like the World Choir Games is based on the Olympic ideals, which aim to peacefully unify people and nations connected by song in a fair competition. This idea is supposed to inspire people to experience the power of interaction by singing together. Unrelated to artistic levels, this approach challenges personality and team spirit likewise. The World Choir Games are an international choir festival taking place every two years on different continents.
This idea of the World Choir Games is based on the personal experience of choir singers from all over the world who pick up and pass on human ideals through song. It contributes to people overcoming conflicts and setting, through their social interaction, an example for other people. Music is the common language of the world and serves as a link between cultures and nations.
Vērmanes dārzs
Come and join ''The Celotajs'' take a stroll through Vērmanes dārzs. Vērmanes dārzs date back to 1817, when a plot of land was given to the town by Anne Vermanis, the widow of a rich merchant. This area was increased in 1829, when her son added moreland. In line with the terms of the agreement, trees and shrubs were planted and the park was opened to the public. Over the years the park has expanded and became one of the best-loved open spaces in Riga. As we enter Vērmanes dārzs from the corner of Merķeļa iela and Krišjāna Barona iela we see paving stone paths that run through the park and well kept flower gardens located through the park. As we move on, we will come upon the statue of Krišjāna Barona and the flower bed that surrounds it. Moving on, we will come upon a well maintained playground and its equipment. Moving on pass the playground equipment, we will see upon a stone wall. As we still move on, we will more paving stone paths running through the park. Moving on, we will come upon its famous fountain. Walking past the fountain, we will come upon the statue of Mihails Tals and the flower bed in front of it. As we move on, we will come across the pair of lions that are located at the north end of Vērmanes dārzs. As we move on, we will pass a tree. Still moving on, we will come across a simple stone monument to Garlieb Merkel.
