Camping in Yoho National Park
The fire is the main comfort of the camp, whether in summer or winter, and is about as ample as one season as at another. It is as well for cheerfulness as for warmth and dryness. - Henry David Thoreau

Hiking the Hoodoo Trail, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada
August 27/2019 Summer Hike
Today we are visiting Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, in Southern Alberta. This became a Unesco World Heritage Site on July 6th 2019. We will be hiking the Hoodoo Trail. The trail is 3.5 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 68 meters. Writing-on-Stone is a very special place. A wide green valley, with steep sandstone cliffs, and strange rock formations called hoodoos. For thousands of years, this unique environment has drawn First Nations people here. We know that some First Nations people camped here as long as 3500 years ago. Some of the rock art may not be this old, the date of its first appearance remains uncertain.
When visiting here, pick up a self guided brochure from the visitor centre, it opens at 930am. There is parking in the day use area, beside the campground. The trail starts on the South side of the playground. As you hike this trail, there are 12 points of interest with information on each in the brochure. As well, don't forget to see the Battle Scene location, which has Petroglyphs with over 250 characters. This is the most extensive rock art scene at Writing-on-Stone. I had no idea how beautiful this place is. If you are hiking this trail in the Summer, bring lots of water, and be on the lookout for rattlesnakes.

What goes on when you are not there!
Join us Sunday, April 13 for Bear Day in Canmore, celebrating all things bear including the grizzly bear. Activities begin at 10 am and end at 3 pm. For more information visit albertaparks.ca.
Ever wonder what bears do when we're not looking? These images were captured with a remote wildlife camera as various species visited a communications or rub tree in Kananaskis Country, leaving a scent as a form of communication to other bears and animals. The image data is being collected as part of a collaborative study looking at multi-species habitat use within our mountainous landscape. In addition to various wildlife species, millions of people visit Kananaskis Country each year. Alberta Parks dedicates significant efforts to maintaining a positive coexistence of wildlife and park visitors through tools such as our bear shepherding program, wildlife proof garbage bins and superior visitor education.
