Stonehill Farm - 1403 Quechee West Hartford Road, Quechee Vermont 05059
Halfway between the storied Village of Woodstock, Vermont and the ivy league halls of Dartmouth College in nearby Hanover, NH and minutes to every possible recreational amenity in Quechee, Stonehill Farm offers an extraordinary equestrian facility on over 200 acres of open pastures, mixed northern hardwood forests and miles of interior roads and trails to explore.
The ca. 1991 main house, with its dramatic stone exterior and soaring two story library, was designed by noted New York architect Alan Wanzenberg who’s overall approach is often informed by his deep appreciation for the Arts & Crafts and other analogous movements. Echoes of the Arts and Crafts style, strongly influenced by the Tudor and the styles of south-east England as well as those of Edwin Lutyens can be heard clearly through the architectural voice of the property.
Set high along the top of a south facing ridge, the Vermont countryside unfolds at your feet with commanding views across the Ottaquechee Valley and copious fenestration on the south walls to take full advantage of the direct southern exposure. Constructed in the tradition of old world craftsmanship, this incomparable stone and cedar home features the finest quality materials and decorative finishes throughout. The approximately 9,000 square foot, 15-room residence is an elegant and timeless design in richly textured stone, expansive glass, and mahogany details. The main house offers seven bedrooms, nine baths, a recently remodeled gourmet kitchen, formal living and dining rooms, 3,200 bottle wine cellar, and presides over a pond-like, heated swimming pool surrounded by bluestone terraces. Its enduring and harmonious design is heavily influenced by the original home of U.S. Steel founder Edmund C. Converse “Conyers Farm” in Greenwich, CT.
The interior of the main house is designed and decorated in sophisticated and restrained taste with original interiors by noted designer Jed Johnson. Under the eye of the current owner the west wing of the main house including the kitchen, family, dining and rooms have been reconfigured and completely renovated and updated to include a more open flow to the rest of the expansive first floor entertaining spaces. Other recent interior updates were conducted with an eye towards softening the interior color palate and include a refinishing or replacement of almost all interior flooring and replacement of many of the lighting fixtures. The seven en-suite bedrooms include two large master suites - one on the first floor with guest bedroom – and there is room for the largest gathering whether it be in the living room, oak paneled library or on the large south facing terrace.
Just down the winding drive lined by an allé of maples, you’ll find one of the most expansive equestrian facilities in New England. The 20,000 square foot steel framed complex is divided into three component areas including the area with 12 box stalls, numerous tack rooms and shop and office, a beautifully equipped viewing lounge with barn manager’s three bedroom apartment and the main riding arena which has been converted over to an indoor soft surface tennis court but could easily be returned to its former equestrian use. Acres of open pasture and hayfields, a spring fed pond, improved roads and trails and multiple additional smaller outbuildings including an alpaca barn, equipment barn and wood crib add to both the recreational and functional aspects of the property. A private kingdom ideally located two hours from Boston, four hours from NYC and three house from Montreal. Both private jet and helicopter service are available at nearby Lebanon, NH (LEB) and world class recreational, educational and cultural opportunities abound from skiing at Killington to classes at Dartmouth and everything in between. The perfect location to call your country home.

Beth C.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Sweet spot in VT
Well maintained state park.
There is a trail for campers from the park to the Gorge. It's steep but short and nothing my 13 year old pup couldn't handle. The visitors center with public access is off the main road with a paved trail which is fenced from the gorge. If you go to the end there is access to the river and some lovely spots with wild vegetation. From the bridge there is a spectacular view of the gorge. The trail extends that extends past the bridge is flat but bring your binoculars as there are lots of birds. The campground is well maintained and the bathroom is new with stone tile and wood. The showers are coin operated at 50 cents for 5 minutes. Across the street there are shops for rainy days. The Cabot store offers lots of cheese samples, there's an alpaca store with woolen items, and a large antique center with loads of consignment booths with everything from antique tools and turquoise jewelry to vintage toys and old Coca-Cola bottles. Dogs and fires are permitted.

Woodstock, VT: Billings Farm & SugarBush Farm
We recently visited Woodstock, VT and fell in love with this gorgeous slice of geography. On our visit we stopped by Billings Farm, a working dairy farm and Sugarbush Farm, an active cheese and maple syrup business. Check out our fun adventure.
