Vietnam Vespa Adventures in Hoi An
Carmen and Dave from go on another Vietnam Vespa Adventures tour, this time in Hoi.
From the blog: Our tour would take in the verdant countryside surrounding Hoi An where farmers grow wide green fields of rice, long horned buffalos chill out in mud pits and all manner of ducks, geese, ducks and chickens chirp and peck amid the vegetable and herb crops. Out there, people work in the heat and the rain, unchanged traditions for hundreds of years.
We slapped on sunglasses, sunscreen and long trousers and packed our hats and plenty of water, then were picked up on beautifully presented Vespa scooters by our drivers at around eight am. I reckon the temperature was already hovering close to thirty degrees Celsius, and from the growing triumph of the sun it would get hotter still.
Our first stop was the ferry dock by the inlet river, and our drivers threaded us through the bright blacktop streets of Hoi An’s old town where you won’t find on air-conditioned building.
It’s all UNESCO heritage listed to protect the character of the French style stucco buildings. But the tree-lined boulevards throw plenty of shade, and we took a few short cuts through narrow laneways throbbing with cooler air and startled pedestrians.
Hoi An began its life many centuries ago as a trading post that took advantage of its natural harbour and reliable waterways. The French colonists developed it as a port town and the riches that flowed through it eddied into classical buildings, many painted yellow, and at night they are lit up with a kaleidoscope of colourful lanterns, making it all seem like a dream, even in the bright light of day.
The shade blinked away as we emerged into the unforgiving heat of the docks where a wooden ferry hip and shouldered the quay, swinging on the morning tide. Our Vespas were loaded on board and we boarded – “watch your head,” ringing in my ears as I bashed my head on the low beams of the sunshade.
The ropes were cast away and our venerable craft chugged away under the power of its clapped out marine diesel, brackish smells of tide and the day’s catch of fish following us. The bow aimed for Cam Kim island, and in no time at all the hull swung to port at the other side and docked with a nudge.
Back on the bikes, legs up and over onto hot seats, our drivers gunned us through a small village shaded by phalanxes of bamboo and willow trees then took us along a long canal where dredges were going hammer and tongs to create a new rice paddy. Everywhere people were working – digging ditches, threshing rice fields, sowing crops or riding scooters hither and thither. The temperature was pushing thirty degrees by now, but the morning’s work had only just gotten warm.

Hai Van Pass & Coastal Adventure
Are you ready for The Ride Of Your Life?
We begin our Vespa Adventure as our experienced drivers bring you out of Hoi An & along the coastal road stopping at the North end of the world renown Da Nang Beach. Then after a quick break on the suspension bridge overlooking Da Nang City & the fishing port, we head along Da Nang Bay where we stop for a local style coffee. Heading up the famous Hai Van Pass by motorbike, we’ll take in the amazing views over the bays before stopping at the top to see the old war battlements and bunkers & learn about the fascinating history and strategic importance of the pass. Then it’s down the Hai Van Pass for fun hairpin bends and windy hill roads, before taking a brief stop to take in the amazing view of Lang Co Beach & Lagoon from near the level crossing. It’s back on the Vespas and after riding around a lagoon adorned with stilted houses & oyster farms, we’ll have a well-deserved lunch in a delightful local setting.
Our fascinating ride continues as we head north on to the quieter coastal road, passing through the magnificent rural countryside. We ride past many ancestral houses & tombs which play an important part in Vietnamese culture, known as the ‘City Of Ghosts’. We’ll then jump off the bikes and head up to a hilltop Buddhist pagoda with stunning views of the huge lagoon. After a break in a local cafe, we visit & learn about the history of a thousand-year-old Cham Temple and the Champa Kingdom. Our final stretch takes us through yet more beautiful rural landscapes and local villages, we visit a local family making fish sauce, pass by many ornate tombs and ancestral houses and check out a local boat building yard before arriving in Hue city. The day and Hai Van Pass tour will conclude in Hue with drop off at the hotel.
(From Hue to Hoi An also available)
*Highlights* – Hai Van Pass by Vespa motorbike (like Top Gear!), local fish sauce making family, Cham Temple, ‘City of Ghosts’, hilltop Pagoda, old war bunkers, Da Nang Becah, conclude in Hoi An.

Vietnamese Bird Club Culture
Vietnamese bird club culture is one that's extremely overlooked by travellers, but also extremely interesting. While wandering around the streets of Saigon, or any town in Vietnam, you'll notice an abundance of classic bird cages with delightfully chirping birds inside. These birds are more than just pets, they're a hobby. They're even a lifestyle.
Every morning, bird club enthusiasts like Lam go to the park, birds in hand. These enthusiasts, typically older men, hang up their bird cages, grab a coffee, and sit down to relax. It's common for these enthusiasts to have many birds, and bring different birds each day. Lam has 24 birds, and on this specific day, he brought along 3 to enjoy the park. Lam goes every morning unless he's extra busy.
These clubs give the birds time to socialize and sing together. If you go to a morning bird club, you'll feel total relaxation- even in the hustle & bustle of Saigon. The beautiful memories and peaceful mood is the perfect way to start a day.

Stunning Rice Paddies of Vietnam
This country is one of the top producers of this widely consumed crop, so it's no suprise that growing rice is a huge part of the culture in Vietnam. Rice farmers work hard on their crop, which can be harvested 2 or 3 times a year depending on the weather. While driving through the country, it's common to see these farmers with their conical hats working hard.
Rice paddies are a vibrant green color, and turn golden when ready for harvesting, which provide stunning landscapes throughout the year.
Rice is used in most dishes in Vietnamese cuisine. From rice paper to rice flour, to even rice wine- this crop is a key aspect of Vietnamese culture.
Watch as we zoom through the relaxing countryside of Rice Paddies.

Vespa Safari Tour in Hue - Travel Vietnam 2018
We had the opportunity to collaborate with Go Explore, an innovative travel agency providing coworkation programs designed for individuals to achieve work-travel balance.
And while in Hue we joined them on a Rural Life Discovery tour which was run by Vespa Safari. In short, we got to be pillion passengers on the back of classic Vespas and taken through the rural areas of Hue, learning, exploring and experiencing some of the aspects of the locals lives.
We had a great time, both the teams from Go Explore and Vespa Safari were great and truth be told it isn't a tour we would probably would have thought to do on our own, but we had such an awesome day, that we would honestly recommend checking out the tours Vespa Safari in Hue have to offer and see which one tickles your fancy! (Be sure to check out Tash's blog post about our time with Vespa Safari on our website!)
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam. But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..
Vintage Vespa Tour, Hanoi Vietnam
Ok so here is a way you can get in amongst the chaos without fearing your not going to make it. Hanoi Vespa Tours are fantasist value for money with their personalised service door to door.
My wife and I had our own drivers while our very knowledgable guide Helen (Lệ Võ Nhật) followed us around to many of the must-see tourist hotspots.
Our drivers Le & Han were amazing. When the traffic is simply at a stand still, these guys work their magic safety manoeuvring their way through every possible gap to keep us moving and on our way.
Though there are plenty of holy-Crap moments, you can be rest-assured you will feel very safe with these guys, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery with plenty of stops along the way.
Though there are a couple of GoPro scenes, this was pretty much entirely shot with a DJI OSMO, which was fantastic to keep the footage nice and smooth.
