On board the HMS Gassten
A quick tour of the HMS Gassten. During our Norwegian Ski touring trip the HMS Gassten is not only our mode of transport but also our chosen accommodation.
H.M.S (His Majesty’s Ship) Gassten was the last ever class of wooden warship built by the Swedish navy and as a result one of the last ever surviving wooden warships. She was in active service from 1973 until her colours were stricken on December 31st 1999. During her career she was involved as part of a NATO force tasked with sweeping for mines in the eastern Baltic, clearing the coasts of Estonia, Latvia and Finland clear of mines from WW2. The Gassten was built by the finest naval craftsmen and marine architects with massive oak beams for protection against exploding mines.
Converted to a high standard, the Gassten sleeps 10 in a combination of double and twin berths, all of which served as the original officers’ quarters. The cabins are cosy but you do have full size beds and space to store your kit, It is far more luxurious than many European ski touring huts, but do remember it is a boat.
Great care has been taken to maintain and cherish the original features and fittings from her days as a serving vessel in the Swedish Navy. Oak beams line the cabin ceilings while the base of the original gun emplacement sits high on the bow and is our favourite place to enjoy a post ski beer!
Viva Florida 500 Spanish Ship Sails Into Port Canaveral
PORT CANAVERAL, Florida -- Florida of olde arrived in the Space Age today when a full-sized model of a Spanish tall ship carrying a crew of twenty-six sailed into Port Canaveral to celebrate 500 hundred years of Florida History.
Adding to the contrast of old with new this morning was when the 165 feet long El Galeón passed by a modern U.S. Navy submarine leaving the Space Coast.

The Spanish Navy's Juan Sebastian de Elcano will make a special visit May 8-10 during the event. Both vessels will host public and educational tours. The Galleon is also available for corporations or non-profit groups to host private evening events.
General admission is $15 for adults and $11 for children.
Express passes, allowing visitors to schedule a two-hour window where they can skip the general admission line, are $22 for adults and $18 for children. A limited number of visitors can also attend an evening soirée with food, wine, and beer on May 11. A total of 150 tickets are available at $75 each.

SOS Coastival: A Call to Save Our Seas!
Happy #OceansMonth! Let this month serve as a reminder that our beautiful waters need our help – many of our sea friends are hurting and are losing their homes due to ginormous amount of trash and harmful chemicals making their way into the waters. But the good thing is we as a whole have the power to stop it. From how we shop to how we shower, our simple everyday choices make ripples of impact to our beautiful waters. By the simple act of doing away with sachets and using reef-friendly products every day, we can #SaveOurSeas – and that's exactly what Human Nature and our sea-loving partners celebrated in this year's first ever #SOSCoastival!
From sunup to sundown, sea-tizens worked hand in hand filling the wide stretch of beach with a beautiful 180-meter art using only eco-friendly methods; no paints, plastics and other sea-harming materials. This is to signify our call for help and pledge to save our seas by leaving no trace when going to the sea. Just good memories made and bonds made even stronger.

SUMMARY
=======
The London Company (also called the Virginia Company of London) was an English joint-stock company established in 1606 by royal charter by King James I with the purpose of establishing colonial settlements in North America.The territory granted to the London Company included the eastern coast of America from the 34th parallel (Cape Fear) north to the 41st parallel (in Long Island Sound). As part of the Virginia Company and Colony, the London Company owned a large portion of Atlantic and Inland Canada. The company was permitted by its charter to establish a 100-square-mile (260 km2) settlement within this area. The portion of the company's territory north of the 38th parallel was shared with the Plymouth Company, with the stipulation that neither company found a colony within 100 miles (161 km) of each other.
The London Company made landfall on 26 April 1607, at the southern edge of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, which they named Cape Henry, near present-day Virginia Beach. Deciding to move the encampment, on 4 May 1607, they established the Jamestown Settlement on the James River about 40 miles (64 km) upstream from its mouth at the Chesapeake Bay. Later in 1607, the Plymouth Company established its Popham Colony in present-day Maine, but it was abandoned after about a year. By 1609, the Plymouth Company had dissolved. As a result, the charter for the London Company was adjusted with a new grant that extended from sea to sea of the previously-shared area between the 38th and 40th parallel. It was amended in 1612 to include the new territory of the Somers Isles (or Bermuda).
The London Company struggled financially, especially with labour shortages in its Virginia colony. Its profits improved after sweeter strains of tobacco than the native variety were cultivated and successfully exported from Virginia as a cash crop beginning in 1612. By 1619 a system of indentured service was fully developed in the colony; the same year the home government passed a law that prohibited the commercial growing of tobacco in England. In 1624, the company lost its charter, and Virginia became a royal colony. (Its spin-off, The London Company of The Somers Isles, operated until 1684).

Sea of Glory - the U.S. Exploring Expedition 1838-1842
Author Nathaniel Philbrick talks about the U.S. Exploring Expedition. Original lecture given January 21, 2004 to celebrate the launch of the digital U.S. Exploring Expedition website.
MS Zaandam Cruise Ship Tour 2018 - Holland America Line
English Captions Available!!!
MS Zaandam is a legendary cruise shipc laimed and worked by Holland America Line, named for the city of Zaandam, Netherlands close Amsterdam. She was worked by Italy's Fincantieri in Venice, and conveyed in 2000. Zaandam is a piece of the Rotterdam class (R class) and a sister ship to MS Volendam, MS Rotterdam, and MS Amsterdam.
Zaandam has a melodic musical theme and is designed with curios and memorabilia from various musical types. Things, for example, a Baroque-style Dutch pipe organ and guitars signed by the legendary rock n roll band Rolling Stones, the guitarist Carlos Santana and legendary british pop rock band Queen can be seen.
One of the rearward stairways likewise has a saxophone marked by previous United States President Bill Clinton.
A few prior vessels additionally bear the name Zaandam: A solitary channel steam dispatch known as SS Zaandam (1882– 1897) and MV Zaandam (1939– 1942). The last was torpedoed by the German submarine U-174 and sank.
MS Zaandam was initiated by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, in May 2000.
On June 24, 2018, the U.S. Community for Disease Control and Prevention detailed that 73 individuals turned out to be sick on the Zaandam because of an episode of norovirus. The ship was on a voyage from Seattle to Alaska at the time.
Zaandam at present sails out of Alaska amid the mid year and amid the winter sails Mexico and Hawaii. In December and January, the Zaandam travels the Antarctic and South America.

Home Estate Agents Leigh On Sea | Which Home Estate Agents Leigh On Sea Do You Choose ?
Home Estate Agents Leigh On Sea
Leigh-on-Sea can be found on the South Coast of the British Isles approximately 35 miles from London, in the County of Essex. Leigh can be reached by car by leaving Junction 29 of the M25 onto the A127 towards Southend. This site profiles Leigh's character by touching on its history, the arts, its people and local industry such as fishing and tourism. The drop-down menu system I hope will direct you, the virtual visitor, quickly and easily to the main areas of interest. The search facility should also help if you have a specific interest. For the fact finders amongst you, source material includes the census, local authors and press, so accuracy should be reasonable or at least based on a consensus view. If you wish to contribute to the site please do email the webmaster. Thank you so much for visiting!
For those looking for home estate agents Leigh On Sea is a costal town built on the Thames Estuary off the North Sea. From sandy beaches and marshland a trip up The Cliffs brings you too a picturesque town full of restaurants, pubs and small niche shops. Spreading out from the town centre are many residential properties broken up by trees & parks.
As of 2001: 9,015 people live in Leigh with 5606 people at working age. Leigh's within the Borough of Southend with a population of 158,800 people and 74,300 households. In 2004 unemployment was at 2.9%. There are approximately 468 km of highways and 13 km of sea -defences.
A beautiful National Nature Reserve, 6 parks and one a golf course is reason enough to visit Leigh. When you add a 15th Century Church, the sadly now closed Grand Hotel (once visited by Laurel and Hardy), a family beach, a warm summer's day and cold beer in Old Leigh... it's even easy to stay!
St Clements Church is located off Leigh Hill on the upper cliffs overlooking Old Leigh. This section of these cliffs is the only part in Leigh that has not suffered from subsidence; this interesting fact can only be explained in one of two ways... significant hindsight on the architecture's part, or it is being looked after by a greater power - you decide!
Home estate agents Leigh On Sea can also offer advice, for instance a church building has been present on the site since about the 13th century, however this is no longer in existence. Currently the oldest part of the church is its ground design from the 15th century and a bowl of a piscina. The piscina is a stone basin near the altar in Roman Catholic and pre-Reformation churches for draining water used in the Mass. It is also Latin for fish. The parish church was dedicated to St. Clement, who was martyred by being bound to a heavy anchor and thrown into the sea during the rule of Emperor Trajan; given the church's close location to the sea a fairly appropriate and honourable name.
Leigh Rectory, now Leigh library, resides on the upper part of the cliffs overlooking Leigh old town on The Broadway, Leigh-on-Sea. This building was commissioned by Robert Eden when he became rector in 1837, and was completed in 1838. In terms of era it's a late Georgian (1714-1837) come early Victorian (1837-1901) build .The previous building, The Old Rectory was pulled down by Robert Eden when he was instituted as the Rector, replacing his predecessor the Rev. J.D. Hodge.
The Pilgrims were the English settlers who founded Plymouth Colony, the first permanent European settlement in New England, America. They were originally known as the Forefathers and occasionally Founders; the term Pilgrim was first used to describe them in the writings of colonist William Bradford.
The Mayflower (alternative for Hawthorne plant) was the name of the the ship captained by Christopher Jones that brought the pilgrims from Plymouth in England to North America in 1620. A second ship called the Speedwell also attempted the journey but started leaking and returned to Plymouth (England) - leading to its passengers traveling on the now crowded Mayflower. The ship headed towards Virginia, where the colonists had been authorized to settle. Unfortunately as a result of stormy weather and navigational errors, the vessel failed to make good its course, and on November 21 the Mayflower rounded the end of Cape Cod and dropped anchor off the site of present-day Provincetown, Massachusetts.
According to home estate agents leigh on sea 1085 is The First known record of Leigh-on-Sea is within the Domesday Book which was compiled between 1085 and 1086, some 915 years ago. Leigh-on-Sea was part of the Hundred of Rochford and was originally called Legra.

Wreck fishing for record cod
In April 2012 we chartered a boat out of Eastbourne in search of the old king cod. Deep Blue Charters had just broken the record for the biggest rod-caught cod in the English Channel with a fish weighing in at 43lb. To help us out we have a couple of local professional sea anglers and a few friends including Tim Pilbeam and Dom Holtam.

SUMMARY
=======
The Faroe Islands (; Faroese: Føroyar, pronounced [ˈfœɹjaɹ]; Danish: Færøerne, pronounced [ˈfæɐ̯øːˀɐnə]), or the Faeroe Islands—a North Atlantic archipelago located 200 miles (320 km) north-northwest of Scotland and about halfway between Norway and Iceland—are an autonomous country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Total area is about 540 square miles (1,400 km2) with a population of 50,322 in October 2017.The terrain is rugged; the climate is subpolar oceanic climate (Cfc)—windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream.
Between 1035 and 1814, the Faroes were part of the Hereditary Kingdom of Norway. In 1814, the Treaty of Kiel granted Denmark control over the islands, along with two other Norwegian island possessions: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing country within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.The Faroese have control of most of their domestic affairs. Those that are the responsibility of Denmark include, military defence, policing and the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs. However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The Faroe Islands also have their own national teams competing in certain sports.
9 Things to Do in Mystic CT
9 Things to Do in Mystic, CT
Top Attractions in this Historic Connecticut Coastal Village
Mystic, a shipbuilding and whaling hub in the 17th through 19th centuries, is Connecticut’s best-known shoreline spot. Situated on the banks of the Mystic River--the two sides linked by the state’s most photographed and fascinating bridge--it is home to must-see attractions that entertain families and enthrall maritime history buffs. Some of the best things to do in Mystic are beloved by state residents and famous far beyond Connecticut’s borders.
Make Memories at Mystic Aquarium
Far more than a refuge for a vast variety of water creatures including New England’s only captive whales, Mystic Aquarium is a research and rescue facility and a multifaceted attraction that captivates all ages. Allow a full day to experience all the aquarium has to offer including sea lion shows in the Foxwoods Marine Theater, touch tanks, a 4-D theater and an interactive “frogs!” exhibit inhabited by more than 30 species.
Mystic Aquarium is perhaps best known for its one-of-a-kind encounter programs, which allow visitors to meet a beluga whale or an African penguin up-close. Although the added fee for a close encounter is steep, the experience is one you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Explore Mystic Seaport
Mystic Seaport, a 17-acre village on the banks of the Mystic River, is Connecticut’s best living history attraction. Climb aboard the Charles W. Morgan--the last wooden whaling ship in existence and the crown jewel of Mystic Seaport’s collection of historic vessels; see a planetarium show; marvel at extensive collections of maritime art and artifacts; chat with coopers, shipsmiths and other village artisans.
One of the most interesting things to do is observing the restoration team at work in the Preservation Shipyard. The Mayflower II, a replica of the Pilgrims’ famous ship usually on view in Plymouth, will be here for several years, undergoing extensive restoration in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing in 2020. You’ll want to spend an entire day, and there are several lunch options right on-site.
Observe Mystic’s Bascule Bridge in Action
The bascule bridge spanning the Mystic River has been in operation since 1922. Never heard of a bascule bridge? “Bascule” is French for “seesaw,” and this unique style of drawbridge was patented by Thomas E. Brown--who also designed the Eiffel Tower’s elevator--in 1918. Much like a seesaw, the bridge is opened by the mechanical lowering of immense counterbalancing weights. When the bridge opens to allow tall boats to pass through, traffic backs up on Route 1.
Sail Aboard the Schooner Argia
You wouldn’t skip the Colosseum in Rome. Don’t miss the chance to set sail out of Mystic: Connecticut’s historic shipbuilding port. From May through late October, the two-masted Schooner Argia will take you through the bascule bridge and out dancing on the breezes of Fishers Island Sound. Pack a picnic or snacks and your own beer, wine or non-alcoholic beverages for a daytime or sunset lighthouse- and island-spotting cruise.
Sip Sweet or Hard Cider Made the Old-Fashioned Way
There’s only one steam-powered cider mill still cranking out sweet apple cider and potent hard cider in all of America. And it’s in Mystic, CT! Each fall, B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill is a family fun destination for apple cider donuts, fresh-pressed cider and apple wine tastings. October and November weekends are the best time to go. That’s when you can see the old press in action, operating just as it has since 1881.
Dine in a Treehouse
Mystic has so many fun restaurants. When the weather’s sunny and warm, the one not to miss is The Treehouse at Oyster Club. It’s a breezy grown-up hangout high up in the trees, where happy hour--featuring $1 oysters and drink specials--lasts for two hours every day. As you might imagine, there can be a wait for this popular spot’s tables at meal times. So, go mid-afternoon, ask for a counter seat, and order appetizers, decadent lobster bisque and a local craft brew or two.

SUMMARY
=======
Cornwall (; Cornish: Kernow [ˈkɛrnɔʊ]) is a county in South West England, bordered to the north and west by the Celtic Sea, to the south by the English Channel, and to the east by Devon, the River Tamar forming the border between them. Cornwall is the westernmost part of the South West Peninsula of the island of Great Britain. The southwesternmost point is Land's End and the southernmost Lizard Point. Cornwall has a population of 563,600 and an area of 3,563 km2 (1,376 sq mi). It is administered by Cornwall Council, apart from the Isles of Scilly, which are administered separately. The county town is Truro, Cornwall's only city.
Cornwall is the homeland of the Cornish people and the cultural and ethnic origin of the Cornish diaspora. It retains a distinct cultural identity that reflects its history, and is recognised as one of the Celtic nations. It was formerly a Brythonic kingdom and subsequently a royal duchy. The Cornish nationalist movement contests the present constitutional status of Cornwall and seeks greater autonomy within the United Kingdom in the form of a devolved legislative Cornish Assembly with powers similar to those in Wales and Scotland. In 2014, Cornish people were granted minority status under the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, giving them recognition as a distinct ethnic group.First inhabited in the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, Cornwall continued to be occupied by Neolithic and then Bronze Age peoples, and later (in the Iron Age) by Brythons with strong ethnic, linguistic, trade and cultural links to Wales and Brittany the latter of which was settled by Britons from the region. Mining in Cornwall and Devon in the south-west of England began in the early Bronze Age.
Few Roman remains have been found in Cornwall, and there is little evidence that the Romans settled or had much military presence there. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Cornwall (along with Devon, parts of Dorset and Somerset, and the Scilly Isles) was a part of the Brittonic kingdom of Dumnonia, ruled by chieftains of the Cornovii who may have included figures regarded as semi-historical or legendary, such as King Mark of Cornwall and King Arthur, evidenced by folklore traditions derived from the Historia Regum Britanniae. The Cornovii division of the ...

SUMMARY
=======
John Calvin Coolidge Jr. (; July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933) was an American politician and the 30th President of the United States (1923–1929). A Republican lawyer from New England, born in Vermont, Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming governor. His response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919 thrust him into the national spotlight and gave him a reputation as a man of decisive action. Soon after, he was elected Vice President of the United States in 1920, and succeeded to the presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924, he gained a reputation as a small government conservative and also as a man who said very little, although having a rather dry sense of humor.
Coolidge restored public confidence in the White House after the scandals of his predecessor's administration, and left office with considerable popularity. As a Coolidge biographer wrote: He embodied the spirit and hopes of the middle class, could interpret their longings and express their opinions. That he did represent the genius of the average is the most convincing proof of his strength.Mainstream scholars have ranked Coolidge as a below-average president. He is praised by advocates of smaller government and laissez-faire, while supporters of an active central government generally view him less favorably, though most praise his stalwart support of racial equality.

Titanic
Titanic is a poignant retelling of the 1912 sinking of the luxury liner and of the lives that were lost during its slow descent into the Atlantic. The film is a feast for the eyes, with lavish production values and a painstaking attention to detail, in particular to the authenticity of the design of the ship. The film's Oscar-winning screenplay is a deft blending of fact and fancy that poignantly explores the lives of those aboard this doomed vessel. The sinking of the Titanic serves as the backdrop for a several fictional subplots, chief of which involves snobby socialite Richard Sturges and his wife, Julia. Mrs. Sturges has booked passage on the ill-fated passenger ship with her daughter and son, leaving her husband far behind. Richard manages to board the ship at the last minute, but to no avail: immediately Julia reveals her plans to divorce him...
