Coburg Castle (Veste Coburg) was home for centuries to the Saxe-Coburgs, who married into families all over Europe, including Russia and the family of the current English monarchy. The castle is one of the most well-preserved in Europe, and it's quite impressive upon approach, sitting on a high hill overlooking the small city of Coburg, Germany.
The castle houses one of the most important collections of glass in the world, as well as an extensive collection of armour and weapons.

Coburg is a town located on the Itz river in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. Long part of one of the Thuringian states of the Wettin line, it joined Bavaria by popular vote only in 1920.
At the top of Bavaria and dating back to at least the 11th century, Coburg sat undiscovered by many late 20th century tourists, surrounded as it was on three sides by the former East Germany. The town’s main attraction, impossible to miss since it overlooks the town, is the 13th century Veste Coburg Castle, one of Germany’s largest and most beautiful. Sometimes called the Franconian Crown, today it’s home to three museums. Reformer Martin Luther, then an outlaw, spent five months here in 1530
On a hill overlooking the town there is a large castle, Veste Coburg, from which you can see an amazing view of the city and surrounding hillside. Housed within there is a museum. It is also the location where Martin Luther stayed while being declared an Outlaw by the Holy Roman Empire.
Schloss Rosenau, the birthplace of Price Albert, Royal Consort to Queen Victoria is just a couple of miles North East of town.

Frischer Wind auf der Veste Coburg - Der Neue ist ein alter Bekannter
Für edle Glasobjekte hat Dr. Sven Hauschke ein besonderes Faible. Als Kurator war er für das Europäische Museum für modernes Glas in Rosenau neun Jahre lang verantwortlich. Nun tritt er die Nachfolge von Dr. Klaus Weschenfelder an und wechselt auf die Veste Coburg. Mit der Leitung der Kunstsammlungen erweitert sich sein Aufgabenbereich. Über eine neue Ausstellung freut er sich ganz besonders.

Für eine 50plus-Reise bzw. eine kurze Städtereise ist die Stadt perfekt. Coburg sollte man besucht und gesehen haben.

Lutherstadt Coburg
Coburg ist eine Lutherstadt, also eine Stadt, in denen der deutsche Reformator Martin Luther gelebt oder maßgeblich gewirkt hat. Die Reformation und eine Schulordnung wurden hier schon früh eingeführt. Martin Luther weilte 1530 sechs Monate lang auf der Veste Coburg. Er verfolgte von hier aus den Augsburger Reichstag, schrieb zahlreiche Briefe und Sendschreiben und übersetzte Teile der Bibel und Fabeln des Äsop ins Deutsche. Ein Film von Axel Mölkner-Kappl.

Coburg - Ein Besuch im Frankenland, Teil 2
Im Mai 2011 war ich ein paar Tage im bayrischen Frankenwald. Kronach, Coburg und Nürnberg waren hier die Städte, die ich besucht habe. Dieser Film zeigt Bilder aus Coburg, speziell die Veste Coburg. Wer den Frankenwald besucht, sollte es sich nicht nehmen lassen, wenigstens einen Tag Zeit einzuplanen, um einen Ausflug nach Coburg zu machen. Neben 3 Schlössern und vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten im Umland ist die Veste Coburg die Hauptattraktion der Stadt. Auch sie zählt zu den größten und best erhaltensten Festungen Deutschlands.Aus Coburg gibt es bestimmt noch viel mehr sehenswertes zu zeigen. Leider hatte ich nur einen Tag zur Verfügung.

Martin Luther und Franken: In Coburg zu Gast | Zwischen Spessart und Karwendel | BR
Die Rezepte zum Luther-Menü gibt es hier:

Martin Luther war vor 500 Jahren mehrmals in Franken zu Gast, seine reformatorischen Ideen verbreiteten sich dort besonders schnell. So auch im oberfränkischen Coburg: Hier hat er 1530 ein halbes Jahr auf der Veste gelebt und in der Morizkirche gepredigt. Kein Wunder also, dass sich die Stadt jetzt mit viel Engagement und Fantasie auf das Luther-Jubiläums-Jahr vorbereitet.
