Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum Day Trip in Naples, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
The journey from Pompeii to Herculaneum is a scenic one with Mount Vesuvius to one side and the Bay of Naples to the other. It only took us 20 minutes to get there by train, so if you’re looking for a day trip, it doesn’t get much easier than this one. Just maybe don’t get off in the outskirts of town like we did, but more on that later.
Vesuvio's Express is a shuttle service that runs to the top of the volcano, so if you’re expecting a guided tour filled with lots of interesting facts, this isn’t it.
That being said, we were perfectly happy to tour the site on our own, and we couldn’t beat the price at 20 Euros per person.
The only problem we encountered was that the roads were completely iced over the further we went up the mountain, and at one point the bus just had to give up and let all the passengers off to go the rest of the way on foot.
Things got a little easier once we swapped icy paved roads for a dirt trail, though we also had snow to contend with, but we eventually reached the top. I would say one of the coolest things about hiking up to Mount Vesuvius was being able to see that it’s a volcano within a volcano, and while there was no bubbling lava visible to the eye, we could see steam rising from several vents.
Our next stop after lunch were the ruins of Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town that was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. While Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was hit by the pyroclastic flow that followed the explosion of 79 AD, which also led to its preservation.
What at first glance appears to be a moat, is Herculaneum’s ancient shoreline. Here we were met with the aftermath of the explosion: a row of old boat houses, each of them filled with the skeleton remains of those who did not escape during the first day of the eruption.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

Naples, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius in 1 Day | Italy in the Fall
Day 2 takes us from Naples through Erclano, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius via the Circumvesuviana train (~€5 round trip) and Vesuvio Express bus including entry to Vesuvius (€20). Once back in Naples, we walk the city's historical center winding up at Sant'Elmo for sunset before grabbing dinner at Pizzeria Raphune in one of Naples many tight alleyways.

This Fall, I took a two week trip to Italy. I had my heart and mind set on trekking through the Alps with the leaves changing colors. Forecasts dictated otherwise. Two days before the trip, I made some executive decisions and went to where the sun was shining - Southern Italy.

Climbing Mt. Vesuvius || Italy 2018
Caught the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Ercolano & purchased shuttle tickets with 'Vesuvio Express' which is right by the station, tickets for €10 each return, and then €10 for the entrance to the park 'Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio'.
A very effective way to get up the mountain! The bus ride up took roughly 25 minutes, whilst the walk to the top of the crater also took a similar time! Overall, from beginning to end (with lots of photo taking) the whole experience was about 3 hours. I definitely recommend you wear a hat/sunscreen & sunnies. Most people wore running shoes or hiking boots, but we just had sandals and TOMS! No problems!
Some people were surprised BUT you do have to pay €1 for the toilet (which is just before the entrance) - quite a normal European thing in my experience!
A great experience - The mountain that created what we know of Ancient Pompeii.

Herculaneum ruins with Vesuvius in distance #2
Coastal Herculaneum, 12 km (8 miles) southeast of Naples, and its farther-inland sister city, Pompeii, 11 km (7 miles) southeast of Herculaneum, are situated on opposite sides of Mt. Vesuvius, Europe's only active continental volcano. The ruins of Herculaneum are often overlooked in favor of Pompeii when in fact the former is better preserved and easier to visit due to its compactness. The population of ancient Herculaneum, at 4,000, was only one-fifth that of its more famous but less exclusive counterpart.
Both middle-class Pompeii and more-upper-crust Herculaneum were destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in A. D. 79. However, Pompeii was covered with 2.5 meters (8 feet) of pumice and ash while Herculaneum was buried under almost 20 meters (65 feet) of fiery mud. The result was that organic matter such as wood later rotted away in Pompeii but was preserved in Herculaneum until excavations began there in the early eighteenth century. Also, Herculaneum is less of a ruin than Pompeii because the weight of the volcanic ash caused Pompeii's rooftops to collapse while the thick, 160-km-per-hour (100-mile-per-hour) pyroclastic flow which descended from Vesuvius and quickly entombed Herculaneum simply sealed up the town without causing too much structural damage to its buildings.
Today the partially-excavated site of Herculaneum is only 25 minutes from Naples and 45 minutes from Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana commuter train line. The excavated ruins lie just eight blocks from the Ercolano train station. On one side of a city street in Ercolano are modern dwellings while on the other side there is huge hole several stories deep with well-preserved villas and other buildings at the bottom.
The remarkable structures which have been uncovered at Herculaneum include the House of Neptune and Amphitrite with an atrium featuring a mosaic of Neptune and Amphitrite and another with a hunting scene. The Villa dei Papiri, which contains hundreds of papiri, was constructed by the father-in-law of Julius Caesar. The town also contained a tavern and a fast food outlet plus baths, a gymnasium and even an underground theatre.
Excavations in 1981 on the arched boat storehouses situated on the port side of the town revealed some 300 skeletons of unfortunate Herculaneum inhabitants who died instantly from extreme heat while sleeping there overnight, hoping to escape by sea the following day. While these corpses are not on display on the site, a cluster of ten was removed to the national museum of archeology in Naples.
For a different perspective on the ruins and vistas over the Bay of Naples, it is possible to reach the 1,281-meter (4,201-foot) summit of nearby Mt. Vesuvius which, by the way, has not erupted since 1944. Transportation is provided by.Vesuvio Express (vesuvioexpress.it) small vans from the Ercolano Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana train line and by Vesuviana Moblita buses from Pompeii. From the parking lot where the road dead ends high up on the mountain it is only a half-hour walk to the top.

Exploring what really happened at Herculaneum following the eruption of Vesuvius.
Pompeii, the lost Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD, has long been a source of fascination to archaeologists. But its sister city Herculaneum, buried in the same eruption but to a much greater depth than Pompeii, reveals far more detail of how the Romans lived.
For many years the city appeared to have been abandoned and it was assumed the inhabitants had managed to escape in the hours before Herculaneum was engulfed by the volcano. Then in the 1980s a macabre discovery was made. Burrowing through the volcanic mud, archaeologists found hundreds of bodies huddled pitifully together. Vesuvius is still active and is on course to erupt again. The lure of its rich volcanic soil and the delights of the Bay of Naples have attracted a far greater population than lived there in Roman times. And while civil servants at the Vesuvius observatory express confidence that there will be ample warning and time to evacuate the surrounding population, many geologists disagree. Evidence from an eruption in 4000BC reveals that the volcano is capable of destroying Naples, a cataclysm far greater than that of 79AD. If that were to happen today it could engulf 3 million people. On that scale, in an area where motorway traffic jams are a fact of daily life, present evacuation plans are completely inadequate.

Italy, Naples: How to Travel from Naples to Pompeii by Train POV
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC by the Osci or Oscans. It came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC, and was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC after it joined an unsuccessful rebellion against the Roman Republic. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was estimated at 11,000 people, and the city had a complex water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium, and a port.
The eruption destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. Evidence for the destruction originally came from a surviving letter by Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from a distance and described the death of his uncle Pliny the Elder, an admiral of the Roman fleet, who tried to rescue citizens. The site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery almost 150 years later by Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre in 1748.[1] The objects that lay beneath the city have been preserved for more than a millennium because of the lack of air and moisture. These artefacts provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana. During the excavation, plaster was used to fill in the voids in the ash layers that once held human bodies. This allowed archaeologists to see the exact position the person was in when he or she died.
Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years. Today it has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year.[2]

Around The World Vlog 23 Mt Vesuvius and Pompei
In this video, I scale Mt. Vesuvius and I tour Pompei in a full day tour. We left Rome at 7:30am and headed down to Naples. It was a 3 hour bus trip through some of the most beautiful scenery. The bus took us 2/3 the way up Mt. Vesuvius and then we walked the rest of the way. It was breathtaking. After Mt. Vesuvius, we headed to Pompei for lunch and then we took a 2 hour tour of the Ancient City which was covered in ash from the Mt. Vesuvius eruption on 79AD. After the tour, we headed back to Rome.
