Max Richard Mickey Daniel - Memorial in Wichita Kansas
Max Richard Daniel was born February 20th, 1921 in Marion, Ks. He stepped into the presence of his Lord and Savior March 15, 2015 after a difficult illness and broken heart after the death of his beloved wife Jeri. He passed away in the home of his daughter and son-in-law here in Wichita.
Max was loved very much by those who knew him. His endearing character, his wisdom, his marvelous sense of humor and strong faith in Christ, made him a man many admired and certainly enjoyed being around. He was a loving and faithful husband, father, father-in-law, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and even a great, great-grandfather.
Max was born and lived in Marion, KS with his parents Howard and Leanor, his bother Quentin and his two sisters, Jodie and Dorothy. His childhood was full of wonderful memories of playing along the river in the park, going to the silent movies with his grandmother and going downtown on Saturday nights along with the rest of the town. Max said, “If you were alive, you were downtown on Saturday night”.
His Dad was a mailman and Max and his brother often went with their Dad on his rural route sometimes staying with the country families over night.
Max’s Dad was also the manager of the Marion County baseball team. He loved to take Max and Quentin to the games to run after the fowl balls and later would treat them to a bottle of pop at the local Cubby Hole Café.
Years later, the family moved to Newton Kansas. Max recalled living in a modest home across the street from a large field where the neighborhood kids would play baseball and put on “pop lid carnivals”.
In High School, Max would go down to the Elks club along with the rest of the teenagers in town and dance to the sound of the Big Band Music. As long as someone had money for the Juke Box, they could dance all night to the sounds of Tommy Dorsey and Sammy Kaye.
As a young man, Max worked at the Rex movie theater for 75 cents a week and could watch all the movies he wanted for free. His brother Quentin, was a soda jerk at the local drug store and was nicknamed “Big Dip” and soon Max became known around town as “Little Dip” but his family all called him” Mickey “which stuck with him his whole life.
In 1939, his family then moved to Albuquerque New Mexico where Max joined the New Mexico National Guard, Troop A, the 111th Cavalry, which was one of the last horse-mounted regiments. He was a horse holder in the light machine gun squad. And in later years, Max joined the Cavalry association and was honored with a plaque at Fort Riley Kansas and then again honored by the Mounted Color Guard at the 2012 Equifest horse show in Wichita.
In 1940 the Army changed the 111th cavalry to a field artillery unit. At that time everyone was given a choice to either get out or go on with the unit for a year of training at Ft. Bliss, Texas. Max decided to leave because an uncle gave him the opportunity to learn how to weld in Wichita. Later, the 111th was sent to the Philippians during World War II, were captured by the Japanese and all most all of them died on what is known as the Baton Death March.
Max received a job as a welder at the Stearman Aircraft Company, in 1940, building By -Wing planes for military training. Soon after that he started work for Aircraft Welders, where he met Jeri Hedges; she worked there as a welding inspector. They started dating and fell in love and went to many of the Big Band dances that came through town. Jeri says she fell in love with Max because he was so much fun to be around and he had such a terrific sense of humor.
They married July 18th, 1943.
Then World War II broke out. Max joined the Army in 1943 and was sent to basic training at Camp Beale in Marysville California. Jeri later accompanied him there. May 25th, 1944 Max was shipped to New Guinea with the Army Engineers, the 723rd Engineer Depot Company. His unit built bridges, roadways and airfields. He received the Good Conduct Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, with one bronze star, and a WWII Victory Medal. His brother Quentin and Jeri’s brother Jack were both killed in action. Those were very devastating times for both families.
Max returned from the war in January 1946 to his lovely wife and their 18-month-old daughter Janice Lee. After the war, they had two more daughters, Patricia Lynn and Rebecca Sue.
Max attended Barber College and worked as a full-time barber for several years in Blackwell, OK and in Wichita. He also worked for Cessna Aircraft Company as an engine mount welder for 30 years and retired from there in 1983.
Max enjoyed many things in life. He and Jeri loved to travel. They traveled to 48 states, camped in National Parks across this country and in Canada.
He also loved golf and for years played several times a week with a group of friends and played well into his late eighties with his son-in-law Gary.
