2016 - 70th Anniversary of the Marines' Memorial Association
Formed in 1946, the Marines’ Memorial Association exists as a tribute to those who have gone before, and a service to those who carry on. Our flagship is the Marines’ Memorial Club in San Francisco, where Veterans from all branches of the US Armed Forces have gathered, socialized, dined, and told their stories for generations. Our 138 room facility, including a restaurant and state of the art gym, is a “home away from home” for many military visitors to the Bay Area.
A unique establishment, the Marines’ Memorial is much more than a Club & Hotel. The Association’s mission is to honor the legacy of military service through a Living Memorial and programs that Commemorate, Educate, and Serve Veterans of all eras.
Our mission is ambitious and the Marines’ Memorial is able to commemorate, educate, and serve because of tremendous support from our loyal Members and contributors. As a non-profit 501(c)(19) Veterans organization, we rely on tax deductible donations to provide charitable programs that support Veterans, the men and women in uniform, their families, and the Bay Area Community.

Birthplace of a Whirlwind: The 1960 Sit-ins
Of Songs, Peace, and Struggle: Birthplace of a Whirlwind program was held at the National Museum of American History on January 14, 1995.
The program for the commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Of Songs, Peace, and Struggle: Birthplace of a Whirlwind: The 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins” took place at the National Museum of American History in the Warner Bros. Theater. The Program was organized by the Program in African American Culture and featured an address by Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee founder Diane Nash and a roundtable discussion with three of the four original sit-in demonstrators in Greensboro, North Carolina. Jibreel A-A. K-A. Khazan (Ezell A. Blair, Jr.), Franklin E. McCain, and Joseph L. McNeil were all students at North Carolina A&T State University in 1960 when they sat down at a lunch counter to protest segregation and spurred mass student-led sit-ins across the South. After the roundtable discussion there was a question and answer period and further discussion, followed by a song workshop featuring the Program in African American Culture’s Community Choir, led by Diane Nash. The program concluded with a tour of “Sitting for Justice: The Greensboro Sit-In of 1960”, which featured the Woolworth lunch counter that was the site of the demonstration, and other objects related to social change in America.

Andrew Molera St Park, Camping & Hiking, Big Sur, California
A trip to Andrew Molera state park in Big Sur, California. Enjoy a hike into the overnight campground and then take the 8 mile (7.76 mi) hike up the ridge and a great view of the ocean and inland valley. Take the River Trail out of the parking lot, up the Hidden Trail, follow the Ridge trail to the peak and then follow the Bluffs Trail back to the beach and parking lot. Enjoy a stay at the hike in campground with firepits, tables and facilities (though no showers, but hey, its 'camping').
The state park sits approximately 26 miles south of Monterey, California, USA, though allow at least an hour to drive down the 2 lane highway, and enjoy a stop in Carmel by the Sea as a nice side trip.
If you plan to camp, try and arrive early in the day as the walk in camp sites are limited and closely monitored, but well worth the planning if you like a simple hike in campground away from the crowds. Wood is available for purchase from the gate agent. A tent is recommended due to the ocean moisture. Make sure to use the food cabinets as the squirrels are very aggressive and will climb on your picnic table to eat anything left out, even your tent is not safe for food storage.
A hike through Andrew Molera is a nice trip off the main beaten path, enjoy it!
