American Battle Cemeteries and Memorials Around The World
Song Friend Destined For Heaven by Rafael Brom
From Where is Your America? by Prof. Libor Brom :
In April 1945, the Second World War was coming to an end. In Central Europe great numbers of people were still dying. In our village fifty hostages had been taken by Nazi soldiers. I was among them. Orders had been given for ten of us to be executed each time one of their retreating soldiers was killed by our guerrillas. Being first in the alphabet, I found myself in a courtyard facing two soldiers armed with machine guns, not knowing if I had one minute, ten seconds, five seconds to live.
Almost unknowingly, I began to pray, a prayer of thanksgiving to God, that if I had not lived for a noble cause He was now giving me the opportunity at least to die for a noble cause - to die in resistance to the tyranny and misery represented in those two Nazi soldiers. Happiness momentarily filled my being - finally my life made some sense.
Without any advance warning, the guards were ordered to take me back to jail. Eventually we were released. From that moment on I have believed in miracles.
Only those who are willing to die for a noble cause are fit to live.
I believe there is a great difference between Americans and the people of other countries. Whenever I travel I recognize this difference. These people have a dream, a sense that there exists a powerful force capable of leading the world to justice and peace. They are aware that there is a unique society in the world where God has put together all nationalities, races, and interests of the globe for one purpose - to show the rest of the world how to live. The dream around the world, in spite of all contrary propaganda, is America.
I ask you, where is your America?
Marion Cemetery - Preview
NOTE: The quality is not good on this but, hopefully, the actual series will be HD. Still trying to figure out my Canon's video mode.
This is just a quick preview of the Marion Cemetery in Marion, OH.
The purpose is to show how expansive the cemetery is. When I do finally shoot video and give a proper tour (using my camera and not my iPod 6), the whole video will probably be split up into multiple segments.

THE OHIO VIETNAM VETERANS' MEMORIAL WALL
The park is actually made up of several different monuments and memorials. The centerpiece of the park is The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall. This polished black granite wall is 125 feet long x 7 feet high and is made of 50 panels that measure 72 tall x 30 wide x 8 thick. The wall sits on top of a 7 foot thick steel reinforced foundation and weighs over 100,000 pounds. It is the longest free-standing monument in the country. (Unlike The Wall in Washington D.C. which is supported by an earthen back-fill, The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall has no external support, and is held in place by only its own weight).
The granite for The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall was taken from the same quarry as The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
The west side of the wall is engraved with large gold letters stating LEST WE FORGET, which is the mission of the park. Beneath the gold letters are engraved the names of the 3,094 men and 1 woman who gave their lives in Southeast Asia during The Vietnam War, from The State Of Ohio.
The center of the east side of the wall contains engravings of all of the wars that Ohio has been a part of since the War Of 1812 up to Afghanistan. These engravings contain photos and factual accounts and statistics of the conflicts. The north end of the east side contains the names of The Ohio Heroes who have sacrificed their lives during The Wars On Terrorism, beginning with The Beirut Bombing and including The Persian Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan (to date, unfortunately we already have more names to add). In the near future, the names of those Ohioans lost during The Korean War will be added to the south end of the wall.
We currently have the first of the two of our helicopters for The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park. On October 22,2011 a few hundred motorcycles led a Cobra AH-1F helicopter into The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park. We are still working on procuring a Huey to finish the display.
THE GOLD STAR MOTHER STATUE
The seven foot tall granite Gold Star Mother statue watches over the names of those on the Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. In her arms she holds the folded flag of The United States Of America.
This statue is dedicated to all mothers and families who have lost a child that was serving our country during both peacetime and war.
This beautiful monument will forever stand watch over The Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and guard the memories of our families, friends and loved ones. She will serve as a reminder that for every soldier, Marine, sailor and airmen lost there is a family who has also paid a heavy price for our freedoms and a mother's heart that will be forever broken.
The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park would like to extend our sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the families of those fallen veterans who have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom for our great nation. This is a debt that the people of America can never fully repay, but we can insure that their memories live on for generations to come.
We can do our best to insure 100 years from now that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren can stand next to The Gold Star Mother Statue and read the names of those who gave all that could be given.
POW/MIA REFLECTION POND & ETERNAL FLAME
The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park dedicated the POW/MIA Reflection Pond and Eternal Flame on November 13th, 2010. The fifty foot wide by eight foot tall black granite wall was added in May 2013. The shape of the wall was chosen as a tribute to our national memorial. The stone for the wall was quarried from the same location.
The remainder of the pond is complete except for benches and memorial pavers that will be installed in honor of those who have been a prisoner of war or who are still missing in action.
The POW/MIA Reflection Pond and Eternal Flame is the first of several monuments that are planned for the east side of the park. The pond sits to the right of The Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
This monument is made up of a large sitting area that will be surrounded by benches, a four tier waterfall, a walkway, a fifty foot wide pond, a black granite POW/MIA monument, an inverted Vietnam War helmet with the eternal flame and a cast steel POW/MIA seal generously donated by Rolling Thunder (The seal will be installed and dedicated in September of 2013).
To the right of the entrance to the pond is a large black granite marker (made of the granite originally ordered for the Ohio Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall) with an excerpt of the history of the POW / MIA flag.

Uncovering an Abandoned 1880's Cemetery
I found a cemetery on a ridge of land that we purchased. I've spent two days clearing brush and will continue the project.
The cemetery is located near Guthrie, West Virginia.
I hope to do some rubbings to try and decipher the unreadable markers. I hope to get the memorials stood back up also.
If you have any suggestions on how to proceed, please post.

Calling an Artillery Strike on Your Own Position: The Badass that was John R Fox
In this video:
According to an 1894 researched report, the earliest effort to create any sort of post office in the colonies was in 1639 by the Massachusetts General Court when a tavern in Boston owned by Richard Fairbanks was designated to be the first post office. This was in keeping with the European tradition of coffee houses and taverns being mailing centers. The first post messenger may have started in 1672 or 1673 with instructions to “behave civilly” and to mark trees so other travelers would know where they are going.

051514 CONROE POLICE MEMORIAL
This week is Police Week as several agencies across the US take time to memorialize the fallen officers.
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Thursday morning Conroe Police Department hosted the yearly memorial at Heritage Park. They paid tribute to fallen officers including Conroe Police Officer Sgt. Ed Holcomb Jr.
Sergeant Holcomb was shot with a rifle and killed as he approached a mobile home during a domestic dispute call August 24, 1982. He and three other officers had responded to the call and located the suspect's wife running from the home. After talking to her the officers learned that the suspect was inside the mobile home and possibly armed.
Sergeant Holcomb was going to attempt to make contact with the suspect and walked onto the porch. As he walked past a sliding-glass door the suspect opened fire, striking him under his right arm in a spot not protected by his bullet proof vest. The suspect then lit his home on fire and shot himself.
Sergeant Holcomb was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound three weeks later.
He had served with the Conroe Police Department for 5 years and was survived by his wife and son.
On hand were Officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, DPS, Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constables Office, Montgomery County Precinct 2 Constables Office, the Conroe Fire Department, Montgomery Police Department and multiple other agencies.
Also attending besides families of officers were several Montgomery County Judges including Kathleen Hamilton and Claudia Laird. Also Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Wayne Mack who attended with his family.
There are 900,000 law enforcement officers in the United States, including the City of Conroe, said Webb Melder, Conroe mayor. In 2013, there were 105 officers killed in the line of duty.
Overall, there have been over 20,000 officers who've made the ultimate sacrifice, including one member of the City of Conroe, Melder said.
In 2014 there have been 42 officer deaths to date. This includes thirteen in auto crashes and three due to heart attacks.
Battle Over Enon Family Cemetery
ENON -- Wednesday was one of the last times Russell Oost and his sister Katrina were allowed on a plot of land they say is the final resting place of their relatives.
Russell and Katrina along with several other relatives are involved in a court battle over who actually owns the plot of land on Stine Rd. in Enon.
We have a short time to clean it up and gather any headstones we need to, said Russell Oost.
It's also a dispute over whether or not the area is a cemetery or just farm land.
The two say the family patriarch, Rueben Winget, who served in the Revolutionary War and his son, Caleb, who fought in the War of 1812 are two of the family members buried there.
Right now, Calvin Hahn and his company Hillside Creek Farms LLC say they own the Stine Creek property.
We tried to get a comment from them, but no one wanted to talk as of this writing.
They did send us a statement when we first reported on this several months ago. Paraphrased, it says Hahn and Hillside Creek Farms LLc own the land and have the rights to do with it what they want, and that the previous owner had already been farming and plowing the land.
That cemetery is not on his land. It is a separate plot of land. His land surrounds three sides of it but he does not own it, said Russell Oost.
The Oosts say they don't want the land back, they just want to preserve the cemetery.
If they win their lawsuit, they plan on putting in new headstones to mark their ancestors.
Next for the court battle, crews from Ohio State University will head to the site and map it using ground penetrating radar.
Then both sides will head back to court. There has been no trial date set in the case.
