Decorated Caves of the Vezere Valley - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Vezere Valley in south-western France is home to some of the most famous decorated caves in the entire world. Chief among them is Lascaux, home to hundreds of paintings of various animals, dated to around 17,000 years ago. Although you can only visit the replica caves, the paintings are absolutely stunning in their detail, their colour and clarity, and we were both extremely impressed.

Man has learned to blend in with the natural architecture of this prehistoric valley. Among its treasures is the Renaissance-era Château de Losse, once part of a medieval fortress. There have been dwellings here for 400,000 years, and a handful of locals continue to live the old-fashioned way, in troglodyte homes. FRANCE 24 takes you to discover it all.

Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley (UNESCO/NHK)
The Vézère valley contains 147 prehistoric sites dating from the Palaeolithic and 25 decorated caves. It is particularly interesting from an ethnological and anthropological, as well as an aesthetic point of view because of its cave paintings, especially those of the Lascaux Cave, whose discovery in 1940 was of great importance for the history of prehistoric art. The hunting scenes show some 100 animal figures, which are ...
