Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s renowned for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. Broad, tree-lined pathways along the tops of these massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular for strolling and cycling. Lucca is also known for its olio d’oliva lucchese, high-quality olive oil produced in the region.
Lucca is a city of some 90,000 people in Tuscany. Its long history goes back to Etruscan and Ancient Roman times, and the city retains pieces of Ancient architecture. Lucca's great era was in the Gothic era just before the Renaissance, and the city contains much marvelous architecture from that era. Lucca's current defensive walls were designed by Leonardo Da Vinci and were never breached. Lucca remained an independent city state until the end of the 18th century. Giacomo Puccini, one of italian worldwide known opera composers, was born in Lucca.
The area of most interest to visitors is still enclosed within the old city defensive wall. The top of these broad walls is a ring park, a pleasant place for walking.
Roman amphitheater - To be found off the Via Fillungo, main entrance by Piazza Scarpellini. The remains of the amphitheater are gone. The houses there are of medieval origin, built where the spectator stands were. The amphitheatre hosts concerts and many international performers including Van Morrison and The Eagles have played here.
Duomo di San Martino, Piazza di San Martino. Romanesque cathedral dating to 14th century. Contains the must-see Volto Santo and Ilaria del Carretto's Sarcophagus (Note you have to pay to see this) - By Jacopo della Quercia. Includes a sculpture of the crucifixion attributed to an eyewitness, Nicodemus. Some interesting carvings in the marble exterior, including a labyrinth.
Torre Guinigi - this is a tower with trees atop it, a very dramatic sight, with good views of the city. No lift, many stairs.
Torre delle Ore - ancient clock tower with original clock still working; is it possible to go upstairs on this tower too (beautiful view on the city, good perspective of Fillungo street).
Palazzo Mansi.
Saint Michael's Church - Located in center of the Roman Forum
Saint Frediano's Church
Via Fillungo Main street full of shops and bars.
Piazza Napoleone, Lucca's largest square. Contains the large Palazzo Ducale, now a government building.
Domus Romana, remains of an old Roman home, have been partially excavated, and may be seen at via Cesare Battisi

Chiesa di San Cristoforo, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The church of San Cristoforo is a church of Lucca which is in Via Fillungo. Attested in the eleventh century, was rebuilt in the mid-twelfth. A three aisles on pillars with apse, presents in the first order of a facade decoration to blind arches supported by columns. The portal, referring to workers Guidetto, is markedly splayed, and decorated with architrave and archway on which you have the reason vegetable spirals of foliage swollen. The sides aggettavano two lions, now reduced to a state fragmented. The conclusion of the facade is marked by frames on which to run the branch spirals. The central rose window and the arches beneath the eaves are to be referred to the fourteenth century. With a series of drastic interventions between 1939 and 1940 the church was used as a shrine of the war dead.
Beautiful view from Torre delle Ore Lucca on Lucca (La Torre dell' Orologio di Lucca)
Torre delle Ore is the only medieval tower left in Lucca out of around 130 that once existed. Most towers were demolished centuries ago, but this one probably owes its survival to the fact that it has contained a public clock for centuries. From the top you can have a whole view of the city. The tower contains a clock since 1390. It's the highest tower of the city, and it's situated in the main street of Lucca, Via Fillungo.

Italy: Lucca
San Paolino).
Clock Tower, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Clock Tower of Lucca (or tower of the Hours, in dialect dell'Ore Tor) is located in Via Fillungo street corner dell'Arancio and, with its 50 meters high, is the tallest of the 130 towers in the city from the Middle Ages to the present. The construction of the tower dates back to the medieval period, around the thirteenth century. Later it belonged to the families of Lucca best known as Quartigiani, Several, Cristofani, Sesmondi and Ceci. In 1390 the General Council of Lucca decided to create a watch bonum, et sufficienter aptum well distinguentes tempus for horas, the purpose of which was leased the tower, given its central location. After some consolidation work is entrusted the implementation of the mechanism to the most important goldsmith Lucchese time Labruccio Cerlotti. The tower, which was acquired by its Cerlotti only in 1471 it was purchased by the City. Only in 1490 was placed a bezel. In this way, the hours were also visible as well as audible through the chimes. The tower is characterized by a slender body with two single below the cell, in correspondence of the room where it is a view of the mechanism with manual winding watch. The interior staircase of 207 steps is wooden. The clock itself, regulated by a mechanism in 1754, the work of the Geneva-Louis Simon with the collaboration of the Lucchese Sigismund Caturegli, has a dial with Roman numerals redone at the time and the needle shaped with unique star in the center; is covered by a protruding eaves. The largest bell announces the hours from one to six, the Roman, and the two smaller bells command quarters, were cast from Lucca Stefano Filippi. Beyond it lies the belfry, jutting through the support of some shelves, where there are four huge arched windows, from which you can enjoy a great view of the city. Today the tower is open to the public and was the subject of restoration before the Jubilee of the millennium. The tower is topped by a weathervane iron bearing the motto Libertas, which was located on the flags of the Republic of Lucca and the date 1754. The vane original is on display at the classroom of the Botanical Garden, now that this is a copy recently. The Tower of hours is linked to the legends of Lucida Mansi, the woman who sold his soul to the Devil to stay beautiful and young. The devil, however, would be back after thirty years to require payment of the debt. At the expiry of the Thirty Years Lucida Mansi, on the night of August 14, 1623 climbed the tower, breathlessly ran to stop the bell, which was about to blink the hour of his death. At midnight the Devil would take his soul. But the legend that Lucida not reached in time, the mechanism, he could not stop it and the Devil took his soul.

Imagine a beautiful little Tuscan town protected by massively thick 16th-century walls, featuring some of Italy's finest medieval and Renaissance architecture, superb dining, antique markets, classical and rock music festivals, easy access to stunning nearby villas in the surrounding hills and with endless beaches less than half an hour away. Lucca is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets.
A wealthy and colorful town that draws a more discerning tourist than Florence or Pisa, it is sufficiently off the beaten track to have kept its civility and reserve. Lucca is a city of merchants who know how to woo the visitor and the shopper, but the pace of life varies between slow and slower.
Lucca has one particularly stunning feature - ancient ramparts that ring the old city. The inhabitants built these brick walls in the 16th century for defense. Today, walk (or bike) around the city on the wide shaded walkways atop the walls. If that doesn't tire you out, climb up the Torre Guinigi - the 130 ft. tower has an ancient oak tree on top!
Worth seeing are the churches San Michele in Foro and San Frediano, the cathedral San Martino, the shopping street via Fillungo, Palazzo and Torre Guinigi (14th c.), the latter is one of the few still existing, plant with stone oaks, clan towers (at the heyday of Lucca in the city there were, inclusive church towers, about 170 towers) and the Piazza Anfiteatro. On the ruins of the Roman amphitheater, churches and houses were built, which now form a beautiful oval square.
Lucca is situated 19 m. above sea level on an alluvial plateau, to the left of the Serchio river, not far from the Tyrrhenian coast. An important road junction in Roman times, Lucca was the capital of the Lombard Duchy of Tuscia and subsequently (8th century) the seat of the Carolingian Marquisate of Tuscany. Established as a free municipality (early 12th century), the town grew in political and economical importance, though it was often troubled by internal disputes and rivalry with Pisa. In the first half of the 14th century, it was under various Signorie and in 1369 it became a Republic remaining independent, except during the Guinigi Signorie (1400-1430) and the Napoleonic period, until 1847 when it was included in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, from then on sharing its fortunes.
The town lies within a circle of 16th century walls which, in the 19th century, were transformed into a tree-lined avenue; it has therefore maintained its characteristic medieval structure.

Puccini Museum, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The museum-house of Giacomo Puccini is a historical museum located in Lucca in Corte San Lorenzo, 8. The museum-native house occupies the premises of the apartment where he was born December 22, 1858 the composer Giacomo Puccini. The Puccini family had settled there in 1815 and the master lived permanently in this house until 1880, when he moved to Milan to complete his studies. Puccini later had several residences, but was always linked to his father's house. The house was converted into a museum in 1979 by the Fondazione Giacomo Puccini, thanks to the donation of property by Rita Dell'Anna. The museum contains original furnishings, precious objects that belonged to the musician, including autograph scores of youthful compositions (the first work, the Prelude to orchestra rediscovered in 1999, and the Mass for 4 voices of 1880), and many letters of Giacomo Puccini (like those of Giulio Ricordi), paintings, photographs, sketches, memorabilia and valuable documents, such as working copies and drafts of books Tosca and La Fanciulla del West, a rare draft printing of the score of La Fanciulla del West, a score La swallow, rich musical sketches and handwritten annotations. Inside the museum is also the custom of Turandot, made according to the appear of Umberto Brunelleschi and worn by the soprano Maria Jeritza for the first performance of the opera at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in 1926. The museum birthplace of Giacomo Puccini holds the piano Steinway & Sons (model B-211, serial no. 98606), purchased by Giacomo Puccini in the spring of 1901. It is certainly to be considered the most important of the many piano owned by the composer, both for quality, and for its history. Initially, the piano had been placed in the home of Milan, then Puccini did carry, at the end of 1921, the new villa of Viareggio. On this piano Puccini composed much of his music, but especially the last opera, Turandot. The piano was restored in 2006. The instrument has retained its original structure, recovering the original sound.
Discover Lucca: Lucca's Tower of the Hours
The city of Lucca, in medieval times, was adorned by more than two hundred towers. Lucca’s Torre delle Ore (“Tower of the Hours”), located at the corner of Via Fillungo and Via dell’Arancio, is today one of the few remaining examples.
The tower was built by the Quartigiani family and, as many other towers, was intended to be used for defensive purposes. Later, it was used as housing by various noble families. The change of hands was not always peaceable hence the nickname the “tower of dispute”.
During the 14th century, a large number of towers were torn down but the Tower of the Hours escaped this fate. The position in the city centre was decisive, in August 1390, to install a public clock inside the tower.
Gabriele takes us on top of the tower from where the view of Lucca is magnificent. Climbing the 207 steps to reach the top of this tower - the tallest of the city – is worth the effort.
