Tour of The Canadian on VIA Rail - Canada By Train
We had an amazing opportunity to travel across Canada by train on VIA Rail's Toronto to Vancouver route on The Canadian. This is Canada's Amtrak equivalent. For those of you wanting to take this scenic journey, the video and the following details are intended to help provide more information on the trains and special deals that may come up. Travelling by train is indeed a pleasant, scenic experience which I hope you would be able to experience. (Please note that I am not associated with VIA Rail.)

Traveling by train can be pricier and requires more time than other conventions of travel, but it is a luxury of a time gone by. In my case, it was worth every minute; being able to experience the scenic journey, attentive service by the crew members, and getting back into the art of conversation and building friendships (something that we had the opportunity to do with the absence of connectivity for parts of the journey).
Happy Traveling :-)

Toronto to Ottawa: VIA Rail Canada 4K
Haven't travelled on Via Rail before. I took the train to Ottawa from Toronto. Booking on line was a breeze, the train left perfectly on time, the seat was comfortable, the car (and large washroom) were spotless, the food served excellent and the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and professional.
The seats are very roomy and lots of storage space for bags and suitcases. Everything was on schedule and my experience was excellent.

This is a ride on VIA Rail Canada Train 50, which departs from Toronto Union at 6:40am and arrives in Ottawa around noon.
On this journey we had a GE P42 at the helm and an F40PH-2 at the rear - though there was an additional train coupled in front of us from Toronto to Brockville, which then continued on to Montreal as Train 60.

VIA's Canadian - Toronto 2017
Five scenes of the Canadian in and around Toronto. The last scene is of #1 in daylight. A very late #2 meant that the equipment was unable to be cleaned and restocked in time for #1's departure at 22:00. In this case it was rescheduled for 8:00 am the next day.
VIA Canadian No. 2 - Vancouver to Toronto, Winter 2014
Riding Via Rail's Canadian in winter is a different experience than during the peak season when the train can be 20+ cars. This March 2014 consist was a cozy 8 cars with F40PH-2's 6424 and 6408, baggage-dorm 8604, coach 8127. Skyline (dome) 8500, Diner Empress, Manor-series sleepers Elgin, Rogers, and Dunsmuir, and Park (dome) car Evangeline. At Jasper, Park car Strathcona was placed behind the power units and deadheaded to Toronto. The white landscape, frozen lakes and streams, and snow-dusted trees provide their own special beauty and provide a nice contrast to a summer trip.
Our train ride from Toronto to Montreal with Via Rail Canada
Our train ride from Toronto to Montreal with Via Rail Canada. Sometimes it takes being away from a place for an extended period of time for you to truly appreciate it. Coming back home to Canada with Audrey, after nearly three consecutive years of traveling overseas, has rekindled our passion to explore more our own backyard. When we had the opportunity in our schedule to visit Montreal we jumped at the chance.

When deciding whether or not to take the bus or train, it was an easy decision.
Train travel is our preferred method of transportation, so we decided to go with Via rail.
What I immediately noticed was just how much more comfortable it was to be traveling via rail as opposed to flying or taking the bus.
Extra leg room. Check. Wifi. Check. Plugins for my computer. Check. The ability to easily get up and stretch or order food on demand. Check.
Now that I'm in my thirties those little things make a big difference.
The journey itself was phenomenal. The train tracks allowed us to explore scenic parts of Ontario and Quebec that we would have never witnessed had we been on the road.
We passed by cities like Kingston and Cornwall along the way and my desire to explore some of the smaller cities in this region is now greater than ever.
Overall, if you're thinking of doing the Toronto to Montreal route - or vice versa - I can't think of a better way than to do it by train.
This is part of our Travel in Canada series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Canadian culture, Canadian arts, Canadian foods, Canadian religion and Canadian people.

4K - GO and VIA Train Action on the Lakeshore West (Oakville Subdivision)
The Oakville Subdivision is known for being one of the busiest rail corridors in Canada and North America. Once owned by the Canadian National Railway, Metrolinx owns the line now and runs a record number of GO Trains, and also VIA Rail Canada trains. CN Freight Trains still run on the far Western end of the line.
I focused most of my attention in the Sunnyside area, between the Exhibition and Mimico GO stations during the morning rush hour. Not only do regularly scheduled GO and VIA trains traverse the line at this hour, but deadheads from the TMC and Willowbrook Matienence Center's pass through here, heading to/from Union Station. VIA's Canadian train also made an appearance, 12+ hours late!
Also threw in some various clips from down the line at Long Branch and Burlington GO stations, as well as some action from the CN Halton Subdivision at the Brampton GO Station.
All locations listed in video.
