Vicksburg is a historic American city, located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana.
Originally built by French colonists in 1719, the outpost withstood an attack from the native Natchez people. It was incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825 after Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. In the American Civil War, it was a key Confederate river-port, and its surrender to Ulysses S. Grant in July 1863 marked the turning-point of the war. Vicksburg then had a troubled history of racial conflict, well into the 20th century. The city is home to three large installations of the US Army Corps of Engineers, which has often been involved in local flood control.
Vicksburg is the county seat of Warren County, Mississippi, with a population of 26,407 at the 2000 census.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers diverted the Yazoo River in 1903 into the old, shallowing channel to revive the waterfront of Vicksburg. The port city was able to receive steamboats again, but much freight and passenger traffic had moved to railroads, which had become more competitive.
Railroad access to the west across the river continued to be by transfer steamers and ferry barges until a combination railroad-highway bridge was built in 1929. After 1973, Interstate 20 bridged the river. Freight rail traffic still crosses by the old bridge. North-south transportation links are by the Mississippi River and U.S. Highway 61. Vicksburg has the only crossing over the Mississippi River between Greenville and Natchez, and the only interstate highway crossing of the river between Baton Rouge and Memphis.
During the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, in which hundreds of thousands of acres were inundated, Vicksburg served as the primary gathering point for refugees. Relief parties put up temporary housing, as the flood submerged a large percentage of the Mississippi Delta.
Because of the overwhelming damage from the flood, the US Army Corps of Engineers established the Waterways Experiment Station as the primary hydraulics laboratory, to develop protection of important croplands and cities. Now known as the Engineer Research and Development Center, it applies military engineering, information technology, environmental engineering, hydraulic engineering, and geotechnical engineering to problems of flood control and river navigation.
In December 1953, a severe tornado swept across Vicksburg, causing 38 deaths and destroying nearly 1,000 buildings.
In 2001, a group of Vicksburg residents visited the Paducah, Kentucky, mural project, looking for ideas for their own community development.[23] In 2002, the Vicksburg Riverfront murals program was begun by Louisiana mural artist Robert Dafford and his team on the floodwall located on the waterfront in downtown.[24] Subjects for the murals were drawn from the history of Vicksburg and the surrounding area. They include President Theodore Roosevelt's bear hunt, the Sultana, the Sprague, the Siege of Vicksburg, the Kings Crossing site, Willie Dixon, the Flood of 1927, the 1953 Vicksburg, Mississippi tornado outbreak, Rosa A. Temple High School (known for integration activism) and the Vicksburg National Military Park.[25] The project was finished in 2009 with the completion of the Jitney Jungle/Glass Kitchen mural.[24]
In the fall of 2010, a new 55-foot mural was painted on a section of wall on Grove Hill across the street from the original project by former Dafford muralists Benny Graeff and Herb Roe. The mural's subject is the annual Run thru History held in the Vicksburg National Military Park.

Vicksburg Mississippi Riverside Park and Flood Wall Murals
The Vicksburg Riverfront Murals project is a series of murals painted on Mississippi River flood walls in Vicksburg, Mississippi in the United States. The murals are intended to depict the city's historical significance, as well as its envisioned future role in the region's commerce and culture.
Levee Street murals
Artist Robert Dafford was commissioned to complete the first series of 12'x 20' panels along the flood wall facing Levee Street. The first mural in the series was unveiled in 2002. In all, 32 panels completed the first phase of the project.
Robert Dafford's 32 life-like pictorial murals depict periods of history in Vicksburg. Also featured is an abstract mural by Vicksburg artist Martha Ferris which was the first mural to be painted along the flood wall in 2001. In a lyrical and playful fashion, it recognizes three vital arteries feeding Vicksburg's diversity: the river, the railroad, and the highway.
Art Park at Catfish Row in Vicksburg, Mississippi.Catfish Row is a historic area that once was part of an extensive wharf in the 1800’s and was one of the centers of trade on the Mississippi River.
The designers of the park used historic elements in clever new ways to interpret the past. When project designers first approached the site they found pieces of famous riverboats that once plied the muddy waters. They uncovered remnants of a huge steamer called the Sprague, one of the world’s great sternwheelers. Known as “the Big Mama of the Mississippi,” she fell victim to a tragic fire in the 1970’s, and for decades lay broken adjacent the site. The designers decided to work this local legend into the fabric of the park. Parts of the original ship, including cleats, vents, and capstans, are included as play or focal features. An abstract interactive ‘Sprague’ steering wheel and play structure is located at the south end of the park. When Catfish Row was at its peak as a port in the 1800’s, early photographs revealed long lines of steamboat stacks emerging from the tree tops. Robert Poore, a landscape architect on the project, recalled that “the idea for the stacks came from wondering what to do with existing light poles. The stacks on steamboats were unique to each boat, so they could be easily identified. The whistles were unique as well.” So the stacks become a visual play for the park and colorfully align with the grid of surrounding streets. The Art Park at Catfish Row is more of an alloy of past, present, and future; fusing historical elements into new forms. Glimpses of the past are still evident in the catfish medallions that are inset into the concrete walls of the park, or the representative Spanish tile edges of the play fountain.

Vicksburg Mississippi
Vicksburg, Mississippi. I had never been here before and really liked the area. The Vicksburg National Military Park was a beautiful green peaceful place. And the history enveloped you. Seeing how the lives of so many soldiers from both sides were involved in the events that took place here made it a somber place indeed. No matter the outcome.......I respect and honor what they all went thru very much.

AMERICAN HARMONY (New Riverboat Departs Riverfront Park) CITY of CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - USA
AMERICAN HARMONY on it's maiden voyage!
American Cruise Lines would like to introduce its newest modern riverboat and the second modern riverboat in the U.S. The newest ship in American Cruise Lines' groundbreaking series of 5 modern riverboats. New Orleans will be its homeport.
New Orleans is monumentally significant in the history of American-built ships on the Mississippi River. As on of the very first American steamboats - a Paddlewheeler named the New Orleans - was the first steamboat to make the historic Mississippi River voyage from Pittsburg, PA to New Orleans, LA in 1811.
Historically, it is fitting to have American Harmony and the country's first modern style riverboats make their inaugural sailings from New Orleans. American Cruise Lines' modern riverboats are the first style departure from the classic paddlewheel riverboats that have been plying the Mississippi since the early 1800s.
American Cruise Lines is honored to continue the legacy of American ingenuity and American shipbuilding by introducing American Harmony and the first modern riverboats in the U.S. from the magical city. In addition to 2019's new American Harmony, American Cruise Lines introduced their modern series flagship, American Song on the Mississippi in 2018, and plans to introduce their 3rd modern riverboat, American Jazz, on the Mississippi in 2020.
American Cruise Lines has been offering cruises on the Mississippi River for over 30 years. The Line currently operates over 9 different Mississippi River itineraries including fabulous Holiday and Theme cruises. American Harmony is the Line's 3rd Mississippi riverboat and 11th new ship.
American Cruise Lines currently operates 11 small ships across the country, visiting over 25 states. The Line offers 3 distinct small ship styles, accommodating 100-200 guests: the new modern riverboats (like American Harmony), Victorian style paddlewheelers, and small Coastal cruise ships. Unlike any other U.S. Line, only American's fleet of small ships is able to provide river cruise style itineraries along both the country's great rivers as well as its protected coastlines, opening up a breadth of U.S. cruising destinations no one else can match.
For reservations or to learn more about American Cruise Lines, please call 1-800-814-6880 or visit: AmericanCruiseLines.com
