Donation of Victory Medal of Lone Pine posthumous VC recipient
On Friday 23 August, Dr Brendan Nelson accepted Mr John Baker's donation of Corporal Alexander Stewart Burton VC's Victory Medal.
The medal group, which included the Victory Medal, 1914-15 Star, and British War Medal, as well as other material relating to Corporal Burton VC, was believed to be distributed among family members at one point and consequently lost.
Recently, Mr John Baker purchased the Victory Medal at a garage sale and dedicated his time to track the Burton family in a bid to reunite the Victory Medal with the other medals awarded to the VC recipient.
Corporal Burton VC, 7th Battalion AIF, was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions while defending a newly captured section of trench during a determined Turkish counter attack at Lone Pine on 9 August 1915.
There were three Victoria Crosses awarded for this one action; Corporal Alexander Stewart Burton, Corporal William Dunstan and Lieutenant Frederick Harold Tubb. Burton has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
Corporal Burton enlisted in the AIF within two weeks of the outbreak of the First World War. Owing to illness, Burton witnessed the landing on Gallipoli on 25 April from the deck of the hospital ship Galeka. He landed some days later and was wounded shortly afterwards.
Burton was a friend of Tubb (also a VC recipient) and came from the same area, Euroa in Victoria. Tubb was killed in action near Passchendaele in 1917.
It is probable that Euroa in Victoria is the only district in Australia to have claim to three VC winners. Approximately 130 men from the district were killed during the First World War
There is more information about Corporal Alexander Stewart Burton, Corporal William Dunstan and Lieutenant Frederick Harold Tubb and the action for which they were awarded the VC on the Memorial's website at

Ellerslie on Hopkins River, South West Victoria, Australia
Historic Ellerslie contains three bridges - one currently used, one timber dating from the goldfields days when this bridge was the scene of gold rush traffic north and south, and the stone ford that was an early settlers crossing point. The Hopkins River flows to the coast at Warrnambool but starts near Ararat - a long journey through some of the most productive and beautiful countryside you could ever hope to see. So stop a while down beside the old bridge in Ellerslie, enjoy the history, the beauty, and this wonderful river. Across the river from this spot is the Ellerslie War Memorial - also a lovely place to stop and enjoy looking down on the river while honoring the memory of local men who fought for Australia.
EUROA CAMPING TRIP.
Description OVER NIGHT CAMPING TRIP TO EUROA VICTORIA.
Freight thru Kelly Country
The scene for this video is set in north-eastern Victoria at Glenrowan and Euroa. Back in the 1870s, the notorious bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang operated in this district and it has since been known as Kelly country.
Euroa was the scene of one of their raids in 1878 where the gang stole money, gold and silver.
At Glenrowan in 1880, Ned attempted to derail and ambush the police train, and had prepared a suit of armour for protection (see introductory photo). However, the train was stopped and police alerted before disaster could occur. The final shootout resulted in the deaths of all of Ned's gang, apart from Ned himself, who was severely wounded after police targeted his legs. Ned ended up being hanged at Melbourne Gaol.
Back to current times, I was able to capture the steel train passing through these two stations while on my way south. Glenrowan station is now closed, with the station building being a replica of the original. Euroa station still operates V/Line passenger services between Southern Cross (Melbourne) and Albury on the standard gauge track.
The video was shot on 30 September, 2019 around midday and 1pm, and some of the accompaning photos were taken in June 2012 during my previous visit to Glenrowan.

Two drivers, 1 electrician, 1 conductor and 5 passengers, and 117 passengers were injured. Locomotives S314, S316 and a number of carriages were written off.
Avenel on the Ned Kelly Touring Route
Ned Kelly and his family moved to Avenel when Ned was about 8 years old. They lived here for about four years. Sadly, Ned's father, Red, was buried here, shortly after which the family moved north to be closer to Ellen's family in Greta.
