Victoria Spirits
Created on October 4, 2010 using FlipShare. Vancouver Island's Saanich Peninsula is swamped with wineries, cideries and yes! even one ginery! Along Old West Saanich Road we came apon Victoria Spirits and Barking Dog Vineyards, a charming cottage sort of spot well off the two lane country lane. Victoria Spirits is British Columbia's only handcrafted artisan gin distillery, producing the smoothest gins that will ever pass lips. Each of the many varieties blended from a dozen botanical affords a distinct flavour experience and is great for sipping. Not the usual harsh, hard liquor gin you expect. Take a lovely bottle with you. It may be hard to find and you'll wish you had. victoriagin.com. See the rest of the story at highonadventure.com.

The Stop's Night Market
So last week, Ms. Nicks and I went over to The Stop's Night Market in the Honest Ed's back alley...just barely. We nabbed tix early on because it sounded awesome -- and was, as you'll see in the vlog -- and decided we'd go pretty much right when it opens. But even though we arrived 20 minutes before they started letting people in, there was already a huge line. We decided drinks were in order pre-lineup, so Nicki and I ended up at The Central around the corner...and then so did the line.

Kayak Adventure 950 km 4 months in US west coast, DAY 18
I was excited that Phillip and his wife Elaine had invited me to sailing. At 3:30 p.m., we left Port of Kennewick to the Columbia River by their catamaran yacht, WE BE JAMMIN.
In the sky after the rain, strong westerly wind blew, which was a headwind against our yacht heading upstream. The stream of melted snow was also rapid. Since the wind and the stream flowed strongly in the opposite direction of the travel of the yacht, we revved up a diesel engine to full-throttle with a roaring sound, and spread a main-sail and a jib-sail. We steered in right about 45 degrees to the wind, and then we turned in left about 45 degrees to the wind when the yacht came to the end as shore. We sailed in a zigzag manner. Phillip and Elaine were dealing with complicated task to maneuver the sails and to steer at the same time, while they were cooperating by lifting their voice in every turn.
We sailed upstream to the somewhere above the point Kennewick Man discovered. And then we turned 180 degrees to sail downstream to return to the port. When we cut the engine, we were surrounded by thick silence without engine noise and wind sound. Now, the wind, the water and the yacht flowed downstream at similar speeds and directions. The unstable sail, which was not billowed out with wind, fluttered in the breeze suddenly and violently. So, if I had not paid great attention to the sail, I would have been struck off my head by an aluminum frame of the sail.
I had not had an experience to steer a yacht. I carefully observed a complex structure of the sail, a complicated maneuvering of the sail, a motion of the sail catching wind and a movement of the yacht in relation to a wind. Since I just sailed a kayak with sail for the first time in life five days ago, there was no doubt that this sailing was a precious experience which was going to be useful to maneuver the sail on my kayak on coming journey.

Fun Things To Do On Vancouver Island - Fun Beyond the Ferry Ride Here
- Fun Things To Do On Vancouver Island
Just getting here from Vancouver is an amazing trip. Like being on a small cruise ship through a group of islands ... the Gulf Islands.
There are so many fun things to do on Vancouver Island. These are some of my favorites.
Boating through the Gulf Islands .. by sailboat, powerboat or kayak - you're going to love exploring the Islands and the gorgeous bays.
Golfing, hiking and biking - there are endless trails and trail systems throughout the island to hike or bike. Golf courses where you can play year round.
Long Beach or Chesterman Beach on the west coast are a definite for beachcombing, surfing or just walking the long white sandy beaches.
Salmon fishing, bear watching, whale watching .. you won't be disappointed. Any sighting will awe you!
You into skiing or snowboarding - head to Mt Washington .. a mile-high ski hill. The trails to the back country of Strathcona Park can lead you on a gentle hike to cold lakes or as rugged as heading to camp on the Glacier itself.
Now that you've picked from the list of fun things to do on Vancouver Island ... make sure you set some time aside to go relax and enjoy a few of Vancouver Islands wineries, breweries or the scotch distillery.
You might just have to book extra time to see everything on this list. I never get tired of exploring. I'm very fortunate that I have work that allows me to this into my days, while most of my friends are at work.
If you would like to know more about what I do so that you can join me here, just click the link above. When you put in your name and email address, we'll send you a video to share this info with you.

SUMMARY
=======
Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American soldier, politician, and international statesman who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. During the American Civil War, General Grant, with President Abraham Lincoln, led the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy. During the Reconstruction Era, President Grant led the Republicans in their efforts to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism, racism, and slavery.
From early childhood in Ohio, Grant was a skilled equestrian who had a talent for taming horses. He graduated from West Point in 1843 and served with distinction in the Mexican–American War. Upon his return, Grant married Julia Dent, and together they had four children. In 1854, Grant abruptly resigned from the army. He and his family struggled financially in civilian life for seven years. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Grant joined the Union Army and rapidly rose in rank to general. Grant was persistent in his pursuit of the Confederate enemy, winning major battles and gaining Union control of the Mississippi River. In March 1864, President Lincoln promoted Grant to Lieutenant General, a rank previously reserved for George Washington. For over a year Grant's Army of the Potomac fought the Army of Northern Virginia led by Robert E. Lee in the Overland Campaign and at Petersburg. On April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, and the war ended.
On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated. Grant continued his service under Lincoln's successor President Andrew Johnson and was promoted General of the Army in 1866. Disillusioned by Johnson's conservative approach to Reconstruction, Grant drifted toward the Radical Republicans. Elected the youngest 19th Century president in 1868, Grant stabilized the post-war national economy, created the Department of Justice, and prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan. He appointed African-Americans and Jewish-Americans to prominent federal offices. In 1871, Grant created the first Civil Service Commission. The Democrats and Liberal Republicans united behind Grant's opponent in the presidential election of 1872, but Grant was handily re-elected. Grant's new Peace Policy for Native Americans had both successes and failures. Grant's administration successfully resolv ...
