Travel India - Visiting Victoria Memorial of Kolkata
Take a tour of Victoria Memorial of Kolkata in India -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Victoria Memorial of Kolkata is dedicated to the former empress of India.
It was built in 1921 using both Indian and European architectural styles.
The building was designed as a monument of British rule in India.
It is now a museum, and includes tributes to Indian independence.
The white marble memorial sits on 64 acres of immaculate gardens.
Its splendor is a testament to both British and Indian culture.
Victoria Memorial : One of the most popular tourist attractions in Kolkata
The Victoria Memorial, officially called Victoria Memorial Hall, is a memorial building dedicated to Victoria, which is located in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and a former capital of British India. It currently serves as a museum and a tourist attraction. It is an autonomous organisation within the Indian Ministry of Culture.
The memorial was designed by Sir William Emerson using Indo-Saracenic style, incorporating Mughal elements in the structure. Lord Redesdale and Sir David Prain designed the gardens. The foundation stone of the memorial was laid down in the year 1906. The monument was intended to serve as a tribute to the success of the British Empire in India.
Architect Sir William Emerson laid down the actual plan of the memorial. The design of the structure represents a fusion of British and Mughal architecture. White Makrana marbles were used in the construction of Victoria Memorial Hall and the building was inaugurated in the year 1921. The massive hall is 338 feet (103 m) by 228 feet (69 m) and rises to a height of 184 feet (56 m).
British government money was not used in its construction at all. Rather, the British Indian states, along with the individuals who wanted some favours from the British government, were the main contributors towards the cost of building the Victoria Memorial Hall.
The massive Victoria Memorial stands enclosed within 64 acres (260,000 m2) of blooming gardens. It houses a museum containing a large collection of memorabilia relating to Queen Victoria and the British presence in India as well as other exhibits. The Memorial also contains a Royal Gallery housing a number of portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and paintings illustrating their lives.
After India gained independence in the year 1947, certain additions were made to the Victoria Memorial. These additions formed National Leader's Gallery, containing the portraits and relics relating to Indian independence.

The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (Hindi:आचार्य जगदिश चंद्र बसु भारतीय वानस्पतिक उद्यान) (previously known as Indian Botanic Garden) is situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. They are commonly known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden, and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. It is under Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
The Great Banyan is a banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis) located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata, India. The great banyan tree draws more visitors to the garden than its collection of exotic plants from five continents. Its main trunk became diseased after it was struck by two cyclones, so in 1925 the main trunk of the tree was amputated to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree. A 330-metre-long (1,080 ft) road was built around its circumference, but the tree continues to spread beyond it.

Ghanta Ghar, Victoria Hall, Hardoi
Just like the Rumi Darwaza, the signature building of the city of Lucknow is exactly the same as this is the signature craft building of Victoria Building district Hardoi. Before independence, when India was proclaimed Queen Victoria Empress in 1877 AD, Victoria Memorial buildings were built to reconstruct the history of two places in India, which were then in Calcutta and Kolkata today and the second in Hardoi. Hardoi Club is currently operating in this building.

Hey guys,
Finally, Kolkata food series begins from here! This is the part 1 of Kolkata Food Videos and I am so excited for you guys to see it.
Kolkata is rich in its heritage, diversity, cuisine and hospitality. It was so much fun to explore the city of Joy for 4 days and this is just the beginning. Make sure you stay tuned for rest of the videos and share this one too.
In this video, we start the trail with the iconic Sharma Tea House. The kachoris and chai there is to die for. Then we went to Gupta Brothers to have some sweets and water. Taking a stroll in yellow ambassador cars, we went to two places which are like aan shaan of Kolkata - Victoria Memorial and Nizam's. Nizam's is the place where Chicken Kathi Rolls were invented (as they say).
I had always heard about how the Kolkata Biryani was different than the rest and I had to try it to know. Certainly, using potato in biryani was something new to me. Arsalan Biryani has to be on your list if you come to this city. Ended my day by going to Anadi Cabin. It is an institution in itself. Mughali Parathas and Chicken Cutlet is a real deal here guys.
Lots more coming up in my upcoming videos so stay tuned!
Below are all the places I went to:
Sharma Tea House: 5/6, Sambhunath Pandit St, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700025
Gupta Brothers: 3, Harish Mukherjee Rd, Patuapara, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal 700020
Victoria Memorial: Victoria Memorial Hall, 1, Queens Way, Maidan, Kolkata, West Bengal 700071
Nizam's: 23 & 24, Hogg St, Near Axis Bank Atm, New Market Area, Dharmatala, Taltala, Kolkata, West Bengal 700087
Arsalan: 28, Circus Ave, Lower Range, Beck Bagan, Ballygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal 700017
Anadi Cabin: 9A, Jawaharlal Nehru Rd, Esplanade, Dharmatala, Taltala, Kolkata, West Bengal 700013

Most Haunted Places In Kolkata | Haunted places calcutta | Horror places in kolkata | kolkata bhoot
Haunted Places In Kolkata & Real Ghost Stories - Ghosts, spirits and paranormal activities are something that some people believe, and some don’t. But one thing that is sure about it is that you cannot just ignore it. From the time a child can understand, he knows what “Bhoot” is! Kolkata is the cultural capital of the country, but as you look deep in it, you can discover the haunted secrets of the city. Kolkata is home to many ancient buildings and some of them are home to ghosts and spirits! The city is also considered to be a hub of tantra and black magic. Sounds interesting, right? Do you have a chill down your spine or do you get excited from the horror tales? Are you a horror movie buff? Are you among those who go to see every horror film in the theater just to get the extra thrill?
If you are one of them, who finds adventure in spookiness, then you must surely visit these haunted places once you are in Kolkata.
1. National Library, Alipore – A Haunting in Kolkata!
People reading alone in the library have felt the presence of someone breathing down their neck; this is what people say about The National Library in Kolkata. This happens even more when they do not keep a book in place from where they took it from. It is also said that sounds of footsteps are heard near them. Apart from being the largest library in India, this spookiness in this library makes it one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. There are many stories which connect to these supernatural events taking place. Some believe that it is the ghost of the wife of Lord Metcalfe who keeps roaming in the halls. The librarians working there have also complained that they have felt their chairs being drawn away, books being dropped down and pages rifled. If ghosts who enjoy a good laugh and good books could easily be your favourite kind of ghosts, consider visiting this mysterious library!
Another eerie secret of this place opened when a mysterious room was discovered in this 250 year old building that nobody knew about. Nobody could even enter the room as there was no opening, not even trapdoors. There have been so many supernatural activities in the library that one would not even find a guard during night shift. Who wants to risk his life, right? If you wish to feel the spookiness, this place is a must visit!
2. Under the Howrah Bridge – Top Haunted Places in Kolkata
There is a spot just under the Howrah Bridge which is near the Mullick Ghat flower market which is believed to be center for various paranormal activities in Kolkata. The wrestlers who practice in that area on a daily basis claim that they see flailing hands in the river and they are not sure whether those hands are of human beings or some spirits playing tricks with them. People believe that there are the spirits of those people who lost their life in the Ganges- either by committing suicide or by drowning. Some people also recall the incident of witnessing a lady in white, sobbing and calling their name in a nasal tone which lure them into a state of trauma or to their deaths. You try to save the apparitions, you might end up losing your life!
3. Nimtala Shamshaan Ghat
The Nimtala Burning Ghat is one of the oldest burning ghats in Kolkata and is also considered to be one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. It is believed that on the night of the Kali Puja, the aghoris come to the ghat for their various rites and to invoke the Shamshaan Kali, who is believed to be their reigning deity. The locals believe that the name must not be said out loud. They feed on the left over flesh of the burnt bodies and use this ritual to generate occult powers in themselves. These occult rites and gory sacrifices have rendered the Nimtala Burning Ghat
4. Writer’s Building
No one works here after sunset! You ask why? The most powerful building of Kolkata is also one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. The Writer’s Building used to house the secretariat building of the state government of West Bengal. The empty rooms in this 300 year old building have some hidden secrets. Story has it that this building has been haunted for many decades and the caretakers staying here could not continue their job for more than one month. This was the place where famous revolutionaries Binay, Badal and Dinesh killed Captain Simpson of the East India Company. The large rooms in the building are said to be inhabited by the ghosts and someone’s shrieks are heard late at night even though the building is deserted after 7 pm.
