Melbourne, Australia's Cultural Capital
Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital, with Victorian-era architecture, extensive shopping, museums, galleries, theatres, and large parks and gardens. Many of its 4 million residents are both multicultural and sports-mad.
Reasons to visit Melbourne include to attend major sporting events, to use it as a base for exploring surrounding regions such as Grampians National Park, The Great Ocean Road, and to visit Phillip Island to view the penguin parade. Many UK visitors come to Melbourne for tours of filming locations of soap opera Neighbours.
Melbourne is often called the cultural capital of Australia, with its many art galleries, film festivals, orchestras, choral and opera productions, vibrant live music scene, and a strong food, wine and coffee culture. People in Melbourne tend to dress up more than in Sydney, partly due to the colder climate. Many bars and clubs have strict dress regulations, such as requiring collars and dress shoes for men.
Particular events to note include the Melbourne International Film Festival in August, the International Art Festival in October, and the Melbourne Comedy Festival in April. There are also many concerts and exhibitions throughout the year. In addition to the Melbourne Museum, there are special museums dedicated to subjects such as science, immigration, Chinese history, Jewish history, sport, racing, film and moving image, railways, police, fire brigades and banking.
For the culinary traveller, Melbourne is one of the best destinations in the world. There is an abundance of affordable, high quality restaurants representing almost every cuisine. Eating out is cheaper than in Western Europe but not as affordable as North America. The service in Australian restaurants may be more discreet than many North Americans may be used to. Service staff in Australia are paid considerably more than their North American counterparts so tipping is not customary, though you may choose to give a tip if the service was exemplary.
While most tourists may simply use the city as a stopover on the way to some of Victoria's other attractions, Melbourne in its own right is worth a visit. There are a wide and varied assortment of attractions and sights that every traveller will appreciate. Most are located in the City Centre, in close reach of public transport.

Victorian fun at Essex Police Museum
Young visitors to Essex Police Museum posed for their very own mug shots in a bid to find out what life would have been like as a Victorian criminal.
More than 130 children and adults swapped their jeans and trainers for 19th century style clothes to take part in a Victorian criminal photoshoot.
The event was designed to help children aged five and over understand what life would have been like as a prisoner all those years ago.
Visitors were also able to take a look through an original charge book from Southend to find out what sorts of crimes people were sent to prison for then.
This is just one of the many events held at Essex Police Museum which is based at Essex Police headquarters in Springfield in Chelmsford.
Over the Easter period children can take part in two creative craft events.
On Wednesday, April 13, youngsters aged five and over can drop in between 11am and 4pm to make police 'egg' officers using polystyrene eggs.
The following week, on Wednesday, April 20, children aged three and over can get creative and decorate helmets to make police Easter bonnets.
There is a charge of £1 per child and no need to book for both events.
To find out more about the museum visit essex.police.uk/museum or follow it on Twitter @epolicemuseum.

Port Melbourne is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia, 5 km south-west from Melbourne's Melbourne central business district. It is split between the local government areas of Melbourne and Port Phillip. The area to the north of the West Gate Freeway is in the City of Melbourne. The area to the south is in the City of Port Phillip. At the 2016 Census, Port Melbourne had a population of 16,175.[1]
The suburb is bordered by the shores of Hobsons Bay and the lower reaches of the Yarra River. Port Melbourne covers a large area, which includes the distinct localities of Fishermans Bend, Garden City and Beacon Cove.
Historically it was known as Sandridge and developed as the City's second port, linked to the nearby Melbourne CBD.
The formerly industrial Port Melbourne has been subject to intense urban renewal over the past two decades. As a result, Port Melbourne is a diverse and historic area, featuring industrial and port areas along the Yarra, to open parklands, bayside beaches, exclusive apartments and Bay Street's restaurants and cafes. The suburb also forms a major transport link from east to west, home to one end of the West Gate Bridge.
