Sevastopol (/ˌsɛvəˈstoʊpəl, -ˈstɒpəl, səˈvæstəpɒl, -pəl/; Ukrainian: Севастополь; Russian: Севастополь; Crimean Tatar: Aqyar, Акъяр) is the largest city on the Crimean Peninsula and a major Black Sea port. Since annexing Crimea in 2014, the Russian Federation has administered Sevastopol as a federal city. Nevertheless, Ukraine and most of the UN member countries continue to regard Sevastopol as a city with special status within Ukraine. The population is made up of mostly Russians with small numbers of Ukrainians and Tatars.
Sevastopol has a population of 393,304 (2014 Census),concentrated mostly near the Sevastopol Bay and surrounding areas. The location and navigability of the city's harbours have made Sevastopol a strategically important port and naval base throughout history. The city has been a home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, which is why it was considered as a separate city in Crimea of significant military importance and was once operated by the Soviet Union as a closed city.
Although relatively small at 864 square kilometres (334 sq mi), Sevastopol's unique naval and maritime features have been the basis for a robust economy. The city enjoys mild winters and moderate warm summers; characteristics that help make it a popular seaside resort and tourist destination, mainly for visitors from the former Soviet republics. The city is also an important centre for marine biology research. In particular, dolphins have been studied and trained in the city by the military since the end of World War II.

Ukraine: Dramatic Crimean War victory reenactment fires up Sevastopol
Ukrainian historical groups reenacted the culminating piece of the Crimean War, the year-long Siege of Sevastopol, while hundreds of onlookers watched on Sunday. Dressed in traditional uniforms, the Russian troops faced off against gunfire and cannon shots from the allies composed of French, British, Ottoman and Sardinian forces to commemorate the Crimean War of 1843 - 1856. In the reenactment, soldiers pretend to kill one another and die, as well as to break enemy lines.
During the Siege of Sevastopol, the Crimean capital withstood six different bombardments from the allied navy. The reenactment focused on the battle for the 4th bastion, known commonly as the Flagstaff Bastion, which was one of Russia's most crucial defence siege barriers during the war. Several defensive lines were used as fortifications in it, with trench lines connecting the soldiers.
Originally, from September 1854 to September 1855, allied army members focused their attack on the Flagstaff Bastion and relentlessly put it under fire, with French and Turkish troops severely hitting the Russian garrisons. Yet the 35,000-strong Russian army managed to repel the attack which spanned a year. Allied forces had 50,000 members and 89 ships at their disposal, however the Russian gunmen, naval seamen, and military engineers were able to withstand the attack, which is remembered as one of the most dramatic parts of the Crimean War.
Russian writer Leo Tolstoy fought in the Flagstaff Bastion during the Siege of Sevastopol, and his book Sevastopol Sketches tells three historical fiction short stories about his experiences. The sketches appeared later as full-blown episodes in his renowned novel War and Peace.

STORYLINE:
A military parade took place in Crimea's largest city of Sevastopol on Tuesday marking Russia's Defender of the Fatherland Day.
Various military vehicles and weapons were put on display in one of the central squares attracting the attention of many people including families with children.
Local residents were also celebrating on February 23, the Day of People's Will that marked the events of 2014 when the peninsula was annexed by Russia.
It's not only the Defender of the Fatherland day. For us it's the day of the beginning of the 'Russian spring' - the day when Sevastopol and Crimea started to come back home, to our motherland, to Russia, said one local resident.
Russia speedily rubber-stamped the annexation of the strategic peninsula after a hastily-called referendum in which its residents overwhelmingly backed leaving Ukraine and joining Russia.
Ukraine and the West rejected the vote, held two weeks after Russian troops had seized control of Crimea.
The election, held without credible international observers and without any option to vote for staying in Ukraine, was condemned by the European Union and much of the international community.

Russia: Crimean War soldiers' remains discovered near Sevastopol
Landscape workers stumbled across the remains of officers and soldiers from the Crimean War as they carried out improvement works in Sevastopol on Wednesday.
Buttons, fragments of cloth, and bullets indicated that the remains belong to soldiers of the Crimean War (1853-1856).
Chair of Sevastopol Association of search groups Marina Gavrilenko explained that the artefacts show that the remains are of Russian soldiers.
SOT, Marina Gavrilenko, Chair of Sevastopol Association of search groups (Russian): We found fragments of uniforms, buttons that clearly indicate that they belong to Russian soldiers. It is now difficult to determine whether it was the first defence or a few days earlier or later. People from the archive and museum will determine the time of burial more accurately.
