Sovetskaya Street Gomel Belarus
One of the main streets of the city of Gomel, it is about 7600 m. Starting from Lenin Square, it ends at the city limits near the village of Krasny Oktyabr. The last time the street was renamed in Soviet times, which gave rise to the corresponding street name. In the early 19th century, a new planirovochnaja Gomel system was adopted. According to her Gomel had to develop around 3 main streets, one of which was Probojnaja. This name was given in connection with the fact that forming in the center of Gomel, she crossed the whole city and smoothly flows into the road to Mogilev. At the moment the street is one of the main transport arteries of the city.

Exhibition of Soviet nostalgia in Belarus
(1 Jan 2017) LEAD IN
An exhibition of Soviet nostalgia has opened in Belarus.
It comes ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution next year.
STORY-LINE
If you were born in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), this place will take you back to days gone by.
From children's books to statues of former Soviet leaders this exhibition is packed with nostalgia.
This museum of USSR memorabilia has opened recently in Belarus, ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution next year.
For visitor Emma Galushkina it brings back fond memories of being a school girl.
There are so many wonderful things which remind me of such a warm and kind atmosphere. I remember well my childhood, school years, she says.
Most of the 5,000 exhibit items were donations from the general public.
From school books, tape recorders and motorbikes to statues and photographs of Lenin and Brezhnev, it's a step back in time to normal life during the Soviet Union era.
Museum founder Nikolay Kurnosov says it's the mundane things that evoke the most memories.
We see such sincere and pleasant emotions which are inspired, not so much by political symbols and the history of the Communist Party and propaganda. Of course people always pay attention to simple, mundane things, which remind visitors of pleasant events of childhood and that era, he says.
The museum is located in the Mogilev region in Belarus.

STORYLINE:
Calm returned to the Belarusian capital on Friday, after several days of protests staged by opposition demonstrators on Minsk's central square.
Police stormed the opposition tent camp early on Friday morning, detaining hundreds of demonstrators who had spent a fourth night in the central square to protest President Alexander Lukashenko's victory in a disputed election.
The arrests came after a half dozen large police trucks and around 100 helmeted riot police with clubs pulled up to Oktyabrskaya Square in central Minsk about 3 a.m. (2300 GMT Thursday).
The police stood around for a few minutes and then barged into the tent camp filled with protesters.
They first wrestled about 50 resisting demonstrators into the trucks.
The rest of the 200-300 demonstrators then filed into the trucks quietly, seeing that the end had come for the days-long protest that was unprecedented in the authoritarian ex-Soviet state.
Reacting to the police action one Minsk resident told APTN that the demonstrations were too little, too late.
These demonstrations came too late, and if the demonstrators wanted to achieve something they should have done so before the vote.
Lukashenko claims the opposition is supported by Western forces seeking to bring him down.

Weißrussland Proteste in Minsk (Reuters/V. Fedosenko)
Belarusian police carried out arrests of protesters attending a banned demonstration in the capital, Minsk, on Saturday amid a rising wave of discontent challenging the country's authoritarian government.
About 700 protesters braved the threat of a crackdown after police earlier raided the offices of a human rights organization and arrested an opposition leader.
While it remains unclear exactly how many protesters were detained, the human rights group Viasna said more than 400 people had been arrested.
Among those arrested were about 20 journalists, according to the Belarusian Journalists' Association.
