7 Wonders of India: Vidyashankara Temple
The Twelve pillars in the Vidyashankara Temple mark the 12 zodiac signs, and the sun's rays fall on each of them in the order of the solar months. Located in Sringeri, Karnataka, the temple has ruby images of Venugopala and Srinivasa and a Nandi made out of a large pearl. This temple combines the Hoysala and Dravida architectural features. It stands on a richly sculptured basement. There are six doorways leading into the temple. Vidyashankara of Vidyathirtha, who was the head of this Peetham for a period of 105 years from 1228 CE to 1333 CE, is considered to be one of the greatest Gurus of this Peetham. The temple features 61 images carved in bas relief, of various scenes from the puranas. Buddha is depicted as one of the incarnations of Vishnu here.
Sringeri Sharadamba Temple & Vidyashankara Temple - Visit Adi Shankaracharya heritage in Karnataka
Sringeri, as we see it today, owes its history, heritage, and lineage to Adi Shankaracharya. The town today revolves around the Shardamba Temple and Sringeri Sharada Peetham set up by him in 8th CE, with Tunga River flowing between them.
Archaeologically, Vidyashankara is the most beautiful temple in Sringeri. A unique all stone temple built centuries ago. The inside of the temple has 12 pillars representing 12 zodiac signs. Exteriors have several beautifully carved stone sculptures of Hindu Gods & Goddesses.
Sharada Peetham Elephants, Tunga River, Feeding the fish in the river, the living heritage, are all the attractions of Sringeri.
Sringeri gets its name from Rishi Shringya, son of Rishi Vibhandaka. In fact, the full name is RishiShringra Giri, Giri meaning mountain. The etymology and the name tracing back to the days of the Rishis tells us that Sringeri has been inhabited since a very long time.
Sringeri, as we see it today, owes its history, heritage, and lineage to Adi Shankaracharya. The town today revolves around the Shardamba Temple and Sringeri Sharada Peetham set up by him in 8th CE, with Tunga River flowing between them.
Sharada Devi is the principal presiding deity of Sringeri. It is believed that Adi Shankara brought Sharada Devi here from Kashmir, where he spent some time. The original Sharada Peeth of Kashmir is now in Pak occupied territory.
Inside the temple, Sharada Devi is seated on a Chakra or a wheel and holds a mala in her hand. The original idol of Sharada Devi was made in Sandalwood. Why Not! Sandalwood is found in abundance in the region. The current image in gold was installed in 14th CE by the Saint Vidyaranya. Vidyaranya was the 12th Shankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt who also played a role in establishing the Vijayanagara empire. The idol is adorned with so many clothes, jewels, and flowers that it is not easy to make out the finer details.
Archaeologically, Vidyashankara is the most beautiful temple in Sringeri. The moment we entered the Sharadamba Temple complex, it is Vidyashankara temple that caught our eye. The sculpted stone structure standing on a high platform in a unique semi-circular form is stunning, to say the least. We naturally gravitated towards this temple and stood in front of it admiring its unique shape.
We entered the temple and the first thing I did was counting the pillars inside the Mandapa. Yes, they were 12 in number though they were not all equal. The four pillars in the corners were larger than the rest. I had read about these 12 pillars representing 12 zodiac signs. As the sun moves from the zodiac to Zodiac, the first rays of the Sun fall on the pillar of the same zodiac. I could spot zodiac signs on some of the pillars but could not locate them on all the four pillars in the corners. The kind priest helped us find all of them despite huge crowds that he had to handle. You meet the Aries and Taurus Pillars as you enter the temple. Scorpio and Libra are closest to the deity.

The Sringeri #Sharada Peetham is located on the banks of River Tunga in the Chikkamagalur district of Karnataka. The Sringeri Temple was the first of the four Ammaya Peetham established by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in 8th century AD. The word Ammaya Peetham means “Throne of the Veda”. Sri Adi Shankaracharya established four Peethams or Centers in the four corners of the country to safeguard and propagate the Vedas. The head of the Mutt is called Jagadguru meaning “Teacher of the world”. Although, the sringeri temple was established in the 8th century, the documented history is present only for the period after the 14th century.
The ritual of Aksharabhyasa performed in Sringeri Temple is considered to be sacred and fulfilling. The parents of kids in the age of 2-5 are given a slate and chalk or alternatively, a plate of rice on which they pray to Goddess Saraswati and the Guru to impart good knowledge and education to their children.
Sri Sharadamba is the presiding deity of the town of Sringeri. The original sringeri temple was small with a sandalwood idol of Goddess Sharada installed above a Sri Chakra carved by Adi Shankaracharya. Subsequently, the sringeri temple was renovated and expanded by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha and Sri Vidyaranya. Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha substituted the sandalwood idol with the present golden idol.
According to the history of the sringeri temple, the 32nd Acharya of the Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Vriddha Narasimha Bharati Mahaswamiji had a vision of the Ganapati when he was contemplating on resolving and issue in the mutt affairs. He offered prayers to the image of Lord Ganapati carved on the Torana of the door nearby. The problem was resolved immediately. Since then, the Ganapati has come to be worshiped as Torana Ganapati.

Sringeri also called Sri Kshetra Shringeri is a hill town and Taluk headquarters located in Chikkamagaluru district in the state of Karnataka, It is the site of the first matha [Sringeri Sharada Peetham] established by Adi Shankara in the 8th century CE It is located on the banks of the river Tunga.
Vidyashankara Temple
The Sringeri Matha’s continued lineage is traceable through various records. Two of the most famous pontiffs of this matha are Vidya Shankara or Vidyathirtha and his disciple Vidyaranya.
Vidyaranya is a legendary figure in the history of Karnataka, and also South India. His period saw the beginning of Muslim incursions into the south.
Vidyaranya was instrumental in helping the brothers Harihara and Bukka establish the Vijayanagara Empire, which served as a fortress for defending Hindu traditions and temples against the tidal wave of Muslim invaders from the North.
Vidyaranya it is believed influenced the brothers Harihara and Bukka to have a temple constructed over the Samadhi of his Guru, Vidyathirtha. This temple is known as Vidyashankara Temple.
Built around the Samadhi of Vidyathirtha, this is a beautiful and interesting temple which bears a slight resemblance to an old Chariot. It combines the general features of Dravidian style with the Vijayanagara style. Standing on a richly sculpted plinth, this temple has six doorways. Twelve pillars surrounding the mandapa with figures of the twelve signs of the zodiac.
They are constructed in such an ingenious way that the rays of the sun fall on each pillar in the chronological order of the twelve months of the Hindu calendar. Each column is topped by a Yali with a rolling stone ball in its mouth.
Inside the temple, on the floor, a circle is drawn with lines corresponding to the shadows cast by each pillar. There are five shrines here.
The main shrine has a Shiva Linga over the Samadhi of Sri Vidyashankara and it is known as Vidya Shankara Linga. The other shrines are for Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga. The Garbhagraha is topped by a majestic square vimana.
This temple also houses a broken sandalwood idol of Sharadamba, believed to have been installed in the Sharadamba temple by Adi Shankara Himself. This idol, it is believed, was damaged during the Muslim invasion, and Sri Vidyaranya had the current Gold statue of
Sharadamba installed in its place.

Sringeri Sharada Peetha
Sri Sharadamba Temple (ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶಾರದಾಂಬೆ) is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Saraswati in the holy town of Shringeri in Chickkamagaluru District, Karnataka, India.
The Sharadamba Temple at Shringeri (Shringa giri in Sanskrit) is an 8th-century temple, founded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It housed a sandalwood statue of Shardamba in a standing posture, which was installed by Adi Shankarachaya until the Vijayanagara rulers and Sri Vidyaranya (12th Jagadguru) installed a seated gold statue of Sri Shardamba in the 14th century.
Tradition has it that after the Acharya had dispersed all the non-Vedic creeds prevailing in the country, He was on the look-out for a convenient and holy place where he could establish an institution to spread the truths of Advaita Vedanta. When the Acharya came to Sringeri, he saw an unusual sight on the banks of the Tunga. A cobra was seen spreading out its hood over a frog in labour pains, to give it shadow from the scorching mid-day sun. Struck with the sanctity of the place, which could infuse love between natural adversaries, the Acharya chose this very location to establish His first Math.

Sringeri Sharadambe Peetam Inside the Temple complex
This is captured inside the temple complex, about Sringeri Sharada Peetam please read it in the following link:
Sringeri Sharada Peetham is one of the four Advaita Vedanta monastery (matha) established by Adi Shankara around 800 AD in Sringeri (Karnataka), the others being Dwaraka (Gujarat), Govardhana (Odisha) and Jyotirmath (Uttarakhand).
The Sringeri matha is on the banks of the Tunga River in Chikkamagalur district located in the Western Ghats, India. The Sringeri Sharada Peetham site includes two major temples, one dedicated to Shiva (Vidyashankara Linga, tenth Shankara memorial) and the other to Saraswati (Sharada Amba). The Vidyashankara temple was built during the Vijayanagara Empire era (1338 CE) on a square plan set inside circles in the Tuluvas and Hoysala apsidal style. It includes shrines and relief carving in reverence of major Hindu gods and goddesses such as Brahma, Vishnu (all Dasavatara, with Buddha), Shiva, Saraswati, Parvati, Lakshmi, Ganesha, Shanmukha (Kartikeya, Murugan), Durga, Kali and others. The stone reliefs also include a large variety of Hindu legends from the epics and the Puranas.
The Sringeri Peetham is one of the major Hindu monastic institutions that has historically coordinated Smarta tradition and monastic activities through satellite institutions in South India, preserved Sanskrit literature and pursued Advaita studies. The Sringeri Peetham has been a library and a source of historic Sanskrit manuscripts. Along with other Hindu monasteries such as the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, the contemporary Sringeri matha has been active in preserving the Vedas, sponsoring students and recitals, Sanskrit scholarship, and celebrating annual Adishankaracharya jayanti (gurupurnima).
