Vientiane farmer creates learning space for organic enthusiasts
Setha Agriculture Sole Co Ltd, a private firm that has invested in organic farming in Xaythany district, Vientiane, is set to create an outdoor learning space on organic farming on almost 50 hectares.
Its farm in Xaythany district, called “Sethavangso Garden”, has been gradually recognised by members of the public. It will soon open to the public as an agricultural learning centre, mainly teaching the skills involved in growing crops organically.
More than 10 kinds of fruit trees have been planted at the farm and some of them will start bearing fruit this year. Cattle, buffaloes and chickens are raised at the farm so that animal waste can be used to make organic fertiliser.
The company’s Director, Mrs Bouavieng Phetthalanekham, told Vientiane Times during a visit to the farm last weekend that her firm had been granted a 50-year land concession by the government to create an organic farm on the outskirts of the capital.
“We found it a great opportunity to produce greener farm products as they are currently in demand on the domestic and foreign markets,” she said, noting that organic farming was now the company’s master plan.
She said the produce from the farm goes directly to the Settha Fresh Mart on the That Luang esplanade.
“Prior to organic farming, we tried prawn farming but it didn’t work out. So we abandoned prawns and moved to organic farming in 2014,” Mrs Bouavieng said, adding she was satisfied with the achievements so far.
“After promoting social contributions, we are keen to welcome guests to learn about organic farming, especially students who want to learn about agriculture,” she said.
Recently a number of representatives from various organic farms across Laos underwent training at the farm. They also discussed their experiences, mainly about chemical-free farming and other effective planting techniques, with experts at the farm.
Asked about the possibility of selling the farm’s products to Asean markets, Mrs Bouavieng said it was possible but the farm is currently unable to meet the demands of domestic consumers.
Mrs Bouavieng was among nine Lao businesswomen who recently received the Outstanding Asean Women Entrepreneur Award 2018 for agriculture. The award was presented by the Asean Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN) at the Department of Social Development and Welfare Building in Bangkok, Thailand.
With technical and consultancy assistance from the government, Vientiane authorities and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mrs Bouavieng is delighted that her business is not only focusing on profits but public benefits as well.
“We are pleased to welcome all students who are interested in taking part in outdoor learning classes. This is one way to pass on agricultural knowledge to the younger generation,” Mrs Bouavieng said.
This year, the farm is providing saplings, including young lime trees and coconut palms, to the public as part of National Arbour Day activities.
