Until French colonization in the middle of the 19th century, Vietnam's economy was mainly agrarian and village-oriented. French colonizers, however, deliberately developed the regions differently, designating the South for agricultural production and the North for manufacturing. Though the plan exaggerated regional divisions, the development of exports--coal from the North, rice from the South—and the importation of French manufactured goods stimulated internal commerce.When the North and South were divided politically in 1954, they also adopted different economic ideologies: communist in the North and capitalist in the South. Destruction caused by the 1954-1975 Second Indochina War seriously strained Vietnam's economy. Across Vietnam, the situation was worsened by the country's 3 million military and civilian deaths and its later exodus of 2 million refugees, including tens of thousands of professionals, intellectuals, technicians, and skilled workers.Between 1976 and 1986, for annual growth rates for industry, agriculture, and national income and aimed to integrate the North and the South, the plan's aims were not achieved: the economy remained dominated by small-scale production, low labor productivity, unemployment, material and technological shortfalls, and insufficient food and consumer goods. The more modest goals of the Third Five-Year Plan were a compromise between ideological and pragmatic factions; they emphasized the development of agriculture and industry. Efforts were also made to decentralize planning and improve the managerial skills of government officials.In 1986 Vietnam launched a political and economic renewal campaign that introduced reforms intended to facilitate the transition from a centrally planned economy to form of market socialism officially termed Socialist-oriented market economy. Doi Moi combined economic planning with free-market incentives and encouraged the establishment of private businesses in the production of consumer goods and foreign investment, including foreign-owned enterprises. By the late 1990s, the success of the business and agricultural reforms ushered in under Doi Moi was evident. More than 30,000 private businesses had been created, and the economy was growing at an annual rate of more than 7 percent, and poverty was nearly halved.In 2001 the Vietnamese Communist Party approved a 10-year economic plan that enhanced the role of the private sector while reaffirming the primacy of the state sector in the economy. In 2003 the private sector accounted for more than one-quarter of all industrial output. However, between 2003 and 2005 Vietnam fell dramatically in the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report rankings, largely due to negative perceptions of the effectiveness of government institutions. Official corruption is endemic, and Vietnam lags in property rights, the efficient regulation of markets, and labor and financial market reforms. Although Vietnam's economy, which continues to expand at an annual rate in excess of 7 percent, is one of the fastest-growing in the world, the economy is growing from an extremely low base, reflecting the crippling effect of the Second Indochina War and repressive economic measures introduced in its aftermath.

Khoảng 2 năm nay, người chơi cây cảnh ở Sài Gòn phát sốt với những cây bonsai tí hon có chiều cao chỉ bằng đầu lọc thuốc, nhưng có giá bán cả nghìn đô.
Những chậu kiểng chỉ cao 3-15 cm, được tạo dáng uốn lượn như cây bonsai lớn có giá từ vài triệu tới cả trăm triệu đồng tùy thuộc vào loại cây, kích thước, độ khó.
Anh Lâm Ngọc Vinh (45 tuổi, ngụ Huyện Hóc Môn, TP.HCM) - chủ của những cây bonsai tí hon cho biết, những cây cảnh tí hon không phải ai muốn trồng cũng được, từ khâu chăm sóc, tạo dáng cho cây khó gấp trăm lần những cây lớn.
Người chơi phải thật kiên nhẫn vì mất từ 4-5 năm cây mới có thể định hình đẹp được, những người trồng được bonsai lớn, chưa chắc đã trồng được cây tí hon. Vì vậy giá thành của cây hiện tại dao động từ 50USD đến 4.000 USD.
Từ năm 7 tuổi, anh Vinh đã đam mê cây cảnh, 10 tuổi tập trồng cây, lớn thêm một chút ai cũng biết đến anh nhờ những giải thưởng về cây đẹp trong các hội chợ triển lãm. Là niềm tự hào của gia đình khi tốt nghiệp một trường ĐH Bách khoa, rồi làm việc cho công ty nước ngoài với mức lương cao, anh Vinh đột ngột nghỉ việc trong sự la mắng của mẹ, nước mắt hụt hẫng của vợ, để chuyển qua chơi cây cảnh.
Nhờ sự đam mê, hiểu cây hơn hiểu chính mình, chỉ trong 6 tháng anh Vinh đã được trong nước và thế giới biết đến khi đạt nhiều giải thưởng về cây cảnh, từ đó khách đặt hàng anh nhiều hơn. Từ việc chơi cây cảnh phổ thông, anh tìm kiếm nhiều giống mới, nhiều loại cây và các thế đẹp thông qua sự sáng tạo của mình, cũng như tham khảo của các nước bạn thông qua tài liệu và những chuyến giao lưu, công tác.
Anh Vinh biết đến bonsai siêu nhỏ từ một lần đọc trên báo và thấy ở Hoàng Gia Nhật Bản có trồng 4 cây siêu nhỏ, theo tìm hiểu những người trồng cây này phải thật tỉ mỉ, chăm chút. Lúc đó, anh Vinh nghĩ ngay rằng, mình cũng có thể làm được, nhưng sẽ chăm sóc chúng theo kinh nghiệm của riêng anh chứ không quá cầu kỳ như ở Nhật và anh thành công ngay lần đầu tiên thử nghiệm.
Với mỗi cành bonsai được chiết ra từ mai chiếu thủy, linh sam, dương… người tạo dáng phải đắp đất dưỡng gốc, sau đó dùng dụng cụ để uốn, phân tán cành, tầng, tỉa lá... Những loại bonsai anh Vinh trồng có chiều cao từ 3cm đến 15cm.

Ngôi nhà gỗ do nghệ nhân Thiều Quang Tùng – một trong những nghệ nhân đúc trống đồng nổi tiếng ở Việt Nam xây dựng từ năm 2018 tại xã Đông Tiến, huyện Đông Sơn, tỉnh Thanh Hóa.
Ngôi nhà có diện tích 120 m2, được thiết kế theo lối kiến trúc xưa của cư dân vùng đồng bằng Bắc Bộ, Bắc Trung bộ.
Nhà có 3 gian, 2 chái với rất nhiều các họa tiết Trống đồng Đông Sơn được chạm trổ tỉ mỉ, hài hòa với không gian, làm nên nét đặc trưng của ngôi nhà, mà không nơi nào có được.

LUNAR NEW YEAR Tết CALLIGRAPHY FESTIVAL in HANOI 2018 | LIFE IN VIETNAM

Over 60 Master Calligraphers, called Ông đồ, are at the Calligraphy Festival at Lake Văn, across the street from Hanoi's Temple of Literature.
They're there for the Calligraphy Festival, which runs from February 9th ~ 25th.
Only those who pass a strict calligraphy test are allowed to participate in the festival.
For Tết (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), it is a tradition to have a calligrapher write special Chinese characters or Vietnamese ideographic script on a scroll, which you then hang in your house or business for the new year.
You can request any kind of characters to have written on the scroll, such as Good Luck, Good Health, Happy Marriage, etc - it's up to you want you want written for the new year.
I chose to get 福 written, which means Good Luck, for this coming year.
You can also walk around the mock village setup around Lake Văn to play folk games, buy traditional Tết foods like Bánh chưng (sticky rice cakes with mung bean and pork filling), and other cultural activities.

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 6.232.940 (2008) [1], is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, with a few brief interruptions, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.

On May 29 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay province, Vinh Phuc's Me Linh district and 4 communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1 2008[2]. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions[3] with the new population being 6,232,940[3]. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vietnamese: Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020[4]. October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city.

As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved.[10]

Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples.[11]

The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.

Some others prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1070; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900 year old citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Dinh square. [12]

A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang) in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are small boats for hire and a floating restaurant.

Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street), The Grand Opera House, The State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), The Presidential Palace (formerly Place of The Governor-General of French Indochina), the cathédrale St-Joseph, and historic hotel Sofitel Metropole.
