HAMPI | VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE | AERIAL VIEW | INCREDIBLE KARNATAKA
Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India.[1] It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century.[2] Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal.[3][4] The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.[2][5][6]
Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampi's ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an austere, grandiose site of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others.[7] Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokan epigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra.[2][8] Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old city.
Hampi is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the eastern part of central Karnataka near the state border with Andhra Pradesh. It is 376 kilometres (234 mi) from Bangalore, 385 kilometres (239 mi) from Hyderabad and 266 kilometres (165 mi) from Belgaum. The closest railway station is in Hosapete (Hospet), 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) away. During the winter, overnight buses and trains connect Hampi with Goa, Secunderabad and Bangalore.[10] It is 140 kilometres (87 mi) southeast of the Badami and Aihole archaeological sites
Vijaynagara - Hampi Documentary
Hampi! Now what should i talk about this!!
Stunning, Jaw dropping, Astonishing, Flabbergasting!
Words cannot describe the experience within Hampi..
Hampi is a historic city on the banks of Tungabhadra river which was a capital of Vijaynagara empire. Vijaynagara literally means the city of victory. That's largest Hindu empire the world has ever seen..
When an empire is hindu, it is indulged in arts, commerce, trade, well being.
Hampi offers a lot to architecture & history buffs. Those monuments have potential to rival Rome. Hats off to Archaeological survey of India who has made conscious efforts in restoration work of monuments..
All glory days have an end. The end to Vijaynagara's glories was abrupt. Overconfidence of its leaders lead to its demise. The muslim confederacy razed this beautiful city to dust. And then it was ignored. An haunted city which after decades was buried under banana plantation fields.
I wish to take you through this journey through this video.
I hope you enjoy it!

HAMPI:
Hampi (Hampe) is a village in northern Karnataka, India. It was one of the richest and largest cities in the world during its prime. The name Hampi can also mean champion. It is located within the ruins of the city of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Predating the city of Vijayanagara, Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple and several other monuments belonging to the old city. The ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi.According to statistics of 2014, Hampi is the most searched historical place in Karnataka on Google. The empire boasted a massive army comprising close to a million men. In around 1500 AD Vijaynagar had about 500,000 inhabitants (supporting 0.1% of the global population during 1440-1540), making it the second largest city in the world after Peking-Beijing and almost thrice the size of Paris.
Geography
Hampi is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. It is 353 km from Bangalore and 74 km away from Bellary. Hosapete (Hospet), 13 km away, is the nearest railway head. Mantralayam, which is also on the banks of Tunghabhadra, in AP is some 150 km away. The principal industries of the village are agriculture, the support of the Virupaksha temple and some other local holy places in the vicinity, as well as tourism. The annual Hampi Utsav or Vijaya Festival celebrated since Vijayanagara reign. It is organized by the Government of Karnataka as Nada Festival.
Due to the presence of several mineral deposits in this region (iron-ore, manganese), mining has been done for a number of years. A recent boom for the supply of iron-ore in the international market has led to increased levels of mining in this district. Some feel that the World Heritage Site at Hampi as well as the Tungabhadra Dam is under threat as a result.
Architecture
The city of Vijayanagara was originally encompassed by seven lines of fortifications. These fortifications had a large number of bastions and gateways. The seventh & the innermost fortification enclosed the main city and is the best preserved. The extant monuments of Vijayanagara or Hampi can be divided into Religious, Civil & Military buildings The Jain temples on Hemakuta hill, the two Devi shrines & some other structures in the Virupaksha temple complex predate the Vijayanagara Empire. The earliest amongst them, the Shiva shrines with their stepped pyramidalvimanas or superstructures, date to the early Chalukyan period around ninth-tenth century AD.
Vittala Temple Complex:This is perhaps the most famous and well-known among the ruins of Hampi. The iconic stone chariot in the vicinity of this temple complex is a symbol of Karnataka Tourism. Of late, floodlights have been installed in the temple complex that provide illumination at dusk, thereby adding to the grandeur of the architecture.
The temple houses the famous musical pillars. The British wanted to check the reason behind this wonder and so they had cut two pillars to check if anything was there inside the pillars that was producing the sound. They had found nothing but hollow pillars. Even today we can see those pillars cut by the British.
The road leading to the temple was once a market where the horses were traded. Even today we can see the ruins of the market on both the sides of the road. The temple contains the images of foreigners like Persians selling horses.Wikipedia
Lotus Mahal - Hampi, Vijaynagara.
Lotus Mahal, also known as Kamal Mahal or Chitrangini Mahal is situated in the Zenana Enclosure of the monuments. It is a ticketed monument and a single ticket would let you into the Zenana Enclosure covering several monuments including Elephant Stables. The term Zenana refers to the Women and Zenana Enclosure in general would refer to the Queens' enclosure along with the servants' quarters around and private temples.
Lotus Mahal is a two storied very symmetric structure exhibiting a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The base of the structure depicts a Hindu foundation of stone just like in the temples, typical of Vijayanagara Architecture while the upper superstructure is Islamic in architecture with pyramidal towers instead of regular dome shapes, giving it a Lotus-like look, originating in the name. Also, this is one of the very few buildings that have the plaster intact though it is defaced at several places due to wear and tear, especially; the dampness on the walls is very visible. The exemplary carvings on the pillar arches including those of birds and delicate art work can be very mesmerizing, especially with the Makara Torana on top of these arches that can still be seen on some of them.
It is also believed that the Mahal or Palace was air-cooled and maintained its temperature during summer. The proof of this can be seen in the pipeline work above and between the arches.
The entire monument is surrounded by a fortifying wall which is rectangular in plan. The four corners of the fortifications have watch towers that would have been used to keep an eye on the intruders into the Womens' chambers. While it was a very popular practice to have Eunuchs hold guards at Queens' Palaces in the North India, especially during Moghul rule, the existence of such a practice has not come to light in the Vijayanagara kingdom and era.
Special Report : Hampi - Jewel of Vijayanagar Empire | हंपी-विजयनगर साम्राज्य की गौरवगाथा
Located in Karnataka, Hampi is a world heritage UNESCO site. It was the last capital of Vijayanagar, one of the greatest Hindu kingdoms in India’s history. Folklore also associates Hampi with the Hindu epic Ramayana. Conquered by the Deccan Muslim confederacy in 1565, the city was pillaged for six months before it was abandoned. But some of the grandeur of the place is still visible in the ruins of the city.
Virupaksha Temple - Hampi, KARNATAKA...(Part 1)
Hampi sits on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagar, capital of the Vijayanagara empire. Virupaksha Temple is the main center of pilgrimage at Hampi. As incredible as Hampi is, so is John Gollings, for capturing the architectural marvel of the place with his lens. The renowned Australian photographer had first photo-documented Hampi in 1983, and is all set to do it again.
Alexander J Greenlaw’s photography in 1856 and Gollings’ clicks from the same angle after 127 years in 1983, bring out comparative, matching pictures of the same monuments, which form a major source of documenting Hampi, for not only the state government but also heritage enthusiasts. In 2008, a similar process had been carried out by the government when Hampi was photo-documented. So this process has been done in 1856, 1983 and 2008. Now, 72-year-old Gollings is back in Hampi, busy documenting it. Gollings has his youngest son, Sam Gollings, with him and together they are appreciating the artistic and architectural marvel that Hampi is.
For someone who knows Hampi like the back of his hand, the place has “changed drastically, mostly for the good”. “It’s absolutely fascinating. I’m very interested in the change. It’s seen a lot more excavations, there are more brilliant things to see, at the same time, it’s now more protected as there is fencing around a lot of sites, and it’s very difficult for photographers to work here,” Gollings told Bangalore Mirror. Gollings wants Sam to experience the extraordinary Vijayanagar Empire.
Documenting the glory called Hampi
Unlike lakhs of visitors who throng Hampi every year, Gollings has been special, as he carries out the intense exercise all by himself. Over the 37 years that he has been coming here and documenting the heritage town, his work gives an insight of Hampi to generations, and will do so in the future too, according to the state brass entrusted with the responsibilities of the state’s heritage.
While Alexander J Greenlaw, a lieutenant colonel with the Indian Staff Corps documented monuments of Vijayanagar in 1856, in 1983 Gollings produced comparative, matching pictures and produced prints from original paper-wax negatives and made them available to the state directorate of archaeology and museums for reproduction. This documentation had been brought out as a book in 2009 with the title ‘Vijayanagar – Through the eyes of Alexander J Greenlaw (1856), John Gollings (1983), and Dr R Gopal and MN Muralidhar (2008)’.
“Ritually, I have been visiting Hampi for over 37 years. I have missed a couple of years in between, though. Every year I come here, I keep getting better photographs, so I keep coming back to this place,” Gollings said.
Dr R Gopal, director department of museums, Government of Karnataka told Mirror, “Comparative study is an important aspect of history. On that front, Gollings’ contribution with regard to Hampi is immense. In the comparative study available with us, one set of pictures are from paper-wax negatives of Gollings of 70 mm black and white negative – both in black and negative and that of ours is of recent day colour film.”

The city of Vijayanagara was founded in 1336 AD on the Tungabhadra river, about 120km west of Bellary near Mysore in Karnataka. As the capital of a successful kingdom, the city flourished, dominating the political and cultural milieu of south India for 229 years. The urban settlement of Vijayanagara covers an area of around 26km and is bound on the north by the Tungabhadra river and on the south by the Sandur hills, which are composed of two parallel ranges running southeast-northwest. The area between the two ranges is known as the Valley of Sandur. In the north of the site, a valley running southwest to northeast, and representing an earlier course of the Tungabhadra, cuts the settlement into two separate and geographically distinct zones.
An artificial irrigation canal, the Turtha Kalure, flows along the southern side of the valley. The zone to the north of the valley is characterised by a rocky and uneven landscape, whereas the southern zone is situated in a large plain, broken by occasional outcrops of igneous granite.
