Vijaydurg Fort ( विजयदूर्ग ) - The Navy HQ Of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ???? | AMAZING MAHARASHTRA
Vijaydurg Fort - विजयदूर्ग किल्ला
Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra
Vijaydurg Fort is located in Maharashtra Vijaydurg Fort
Type Sea fort
Vijaydurg , the oldest fort on the Sindhudurg coast, was constructed during the regime of Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahar dynasty (construction period 1193-1205) and restructured by Shivaji Maharaj.
Earlier, the fort encompassed an area of 5 acres (1 acre = 4840 square yards or 4047 square metres) and was surrounded by sea on all four sides. Over the years the eastern trench was reclaimed and a road constructed thereon. Presently the area of fort is about 17 acres and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides. Shivaji extended the area of the fort by constructing three walls on the eastern side, each 36 metres high. He also constructed 20 bastions.
According to legend, this is one of only two Maratha forts where Shivaji personally hoisted the saffron flag. The other fort is Torna.
Vijaydurg Fort was called the Eastern Gibraltar, as it was virtually impregnable. Its locational advantages include the 40 km long Waghotan/Kharepatan creek. Large vessels cannot enter the shallow water of this creek. Also, Maratha warships could be anchored in this creek and yet remain invisible from the sea. It is a protected monument.
Location
Vijaydurg fort is located at the tip of the peninsular region of Vijaydurg in Devgad Taluka, of district Sindhudurg. It is one of the several coastal forts on the western coast of Maharashtra, India. It is surrounded by water on all the four side but connected to land through a narrow road. The port adjacent to the fort is a natural port and is still used by local fishermen.
Vijaydurg Fort - 2015
Fort Vijaydurg is located in Devgad Taluka, of district Sindhudurg of Maharastra. It is surrounded by water on three sides. The fort Vijaydurg which was originally built by Raja (King)Bhoj II of the Shilahar dynasty (construction period 1193-1205) is located on the coast. The fort was earlier known as Gheria. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort from Adil Shah of Bijapur in 1653 and renamed it as Vijay Durgand restored its dignity by expanding its area (Previously just 5 acres ) to 17 acres, got it renovated, added triple rows of huge walls, umpteen towers and spacious inner buildings to it and strengthened it in the 17th century. This fort was also known as Eastern Gibraltar as this fort was impregnable for a long time. Vijaydurg fort was ruled by Peshwa rulers till 1818. It has played host to many famous Maratha Admirals like Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, Tulaji Angre, Sambhaji Angre, Anandrao Dhulap etc. At the entrance there is Hanuman Temple as a symbol of strength. There are historical things such as peculiar main entrance (Maha Darwaza), Khalbat Khana (Secreet Discussion Room), underground tunnel way, cannon shells, huge bastions, granary, godown, flag-hill, lime-stone Grinding Place, Tulsi-Vrindavan, Kanhoba temple, a 800 years ancient well etc. This is only one of the two forts of the Maratha kingdom, where Shivaji Maharaj personally hoisted the saffron flag. The other fort is Torana. The other Architectural marvels related to the fort area .....1) The fencing compound wall constructed at 8-10 m depth undersea, 300ft from the fort is another architectural wonder. This wall is not visible above the sea level. The wall constructed with laterite stones is 122 mtr long, 3 mtr high & 7 mtr in breadth. Majority of attacking ships met their watery grave after colliding on this wall..... 2) The 200m long, undersea/underland man-made tunnel from the fort to the Peshwa Admiral Anandrao Dhulap’s palatial house in the village. Now the tunnel is partially blocked.
Vijaydurg Fort | SOLO RIDE | Gokarna to Vijaydurg | Vlog 3
This was the last stop of my Gokarna solo journey. It was an unexpectedly delightful experience I had in Vijaydurg. It's a small village situated on the coastal area of Kokan Maharashtra. I rode through 3 states - Karnataka - Goa - Maharashtra to reach this place. The MTDC stay here was pretty awesome and humble people.

Devgad Tourism (देवगड पर्यटन)
Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district of MaharashtraIndia consisting of 98 villages.[2] Devgad is known globally for its exports of locally grown Alphonso mangoes.[3] Devgad is also widely known for its pure Alphonso mango cultivation/farming and the whole development has evolved due to undertaking of the cultivation of Alphonso mango farming.[4] Mangos grown here are characterised by their distinct aroma, smooth exterior, thin skin and thick saffron pulp. The variety is different from the Alphonso mangoes grown in the Ratnagiri district. Such is the popularity of the Devgad Alphonso Mango that vendors often pass off other similar looking mangoes under the name of Devgad Alphonso.
Devgad Alphonso Mango is grown on an area of 45,000 acres and reaches a production of about 50,000 tons in a year of decent production. Devgad is also home to the oldest and biggest co-operative society of mango farmers in India, called the Devgad Taluka Amba Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Ltd, with 700 members and 25-year-old in 2013.
Devgad is located on the Arabian Sea in the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, south of Mumbai.
It is noted for its harbour, its beach, and a lighthouse built in 1915 at the Devgad fort. Shilahara dynasty Raja Bhoja II constructed Fort Vijaydurg (Gheria), ruled later by Adil Shah and eventually by King Shivaji and lastly Kanhoji Angre is a national monument situated 45 minutes by road from the main city of Devgad. Fort Vijaydurg, named as the Eastern Gibraltar because of its virtual impregnability, was impressive as seen by British, Dutch, Portuguese armies and travellers 400 years ago and even today as seen by visitors. The nearest railway station is Kankavli on Konkan Railway on Mumbai-Goa road. From Kankavli, one can get an auto-rickshaw or a state transport bus to reach Devgad-Vijaydurg. There is a wall under the sea at shores of the Vijaydurg built such that an enemy's ships, trying to attack, would crash and sink.
Fishing is carried out on a large scale in the sea as well as in the creeks throughout the taluka region. The staple diet of this region is rice and fish.
The first windmill project in Maharashtra was installed at Girye. There is a temple of Hindu deity Shiva which was built in 11th century situated in Kunkeshwar town, 16 Km from main city of Devgad. It is very famous for its Divinity and religious values across Maharashtra and people gather from across Maharashtra on the occasion of Mahashivratri. 3 km from these windmills there is a 16th-century temple called as Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple, dedicated to lord shiva located at Rameshwar. There is a temple dedicated to the goddess Devi Bhagwati at the village of Munge. There are temples to God Vishweswarayya and Swami Kartikaswamy at Hindale village. Also there is temple of Shri Rahateshwar in the village of Gadi Tamhane. A small village known as Jamsande is situated near to Devgad. The famous Dirba Devi goddess temple is located in jamsande. It is approximately 4 km from the Devgad bus stand. Devgad is slowly becoming a tourist hot spot for tourists who want to avoid Goa beaches. This is perfect for family outing in a peaceful and calm backdrop.
The western coastline is highly sensitive, hence recently, Government of India installed static radar and electro-optic sensors at Devgad Lighthouse as a part of India's first coastal surveillance network. Devgad is one out of 46 locations chosen for the network and envisages real-time surveillance cover up to 25 nautical miles

Kunakeshwar Temple & Beach - Sindhudurga....MAHARASTRA
Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan. A walk through the 5 Kms long Kunkeshwar beach across the temple on one side of the hill has quieting effect on the mind. Swimming in the clear water freshens the mind and if you are lucky ones you can get a rare view of dolphins diving in the deep sea from a distance. Greenery of coconut and mango trees surrounding one side of the beach adds to the beauty and makes the whole experience of every visitor a memorable one.

This town is situated on the bank of Arabian Sea. There is a temple for the Hindu deity Shiva in the town. This temple is holy place in Konkan, and is also known as Konkan Kashi.

HISTORY OF KUNKESHWAR
The temple of Kunkeshwar was built many years back. According to legend, a sailor traveling in the sea for trade came near the beach of Kunkeshwar. Suddenly a havoc appeared in sea. The sailor was a Muslim. The ship seemed to sink in the sea. He saw a lamp on that beach. He prayed to that lamp I don't know who you are. But if you will help me and stop the havoc I will build a temple for you. And his ship came to the seashore of Kunkeshwar without any problem. He built the temple as promised. The Lingam was already there. As the Sailor was a non-Hindu, he thought that his religion will not accept him. Therefore he committed suicide from the top of temple.

Vijaydurg Fort || Information in Marathi || Underwater Wall ||
Vijaydurg Fort is situated in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. It is one of the best (sea) forts of Maharashtra. It is surrounded by water on 3 sides. The forts offers some stunning views of Vijaydurg beach and Vagothan Creek.
If you want to understand the Maratha warfare tactics then this fort is a must visit. The fort has many structures which are still intact. I visited this fort with a travel guide who provided me with every detailed information. Here is a video containing all the detailed information of the fort.
If you wish to visit the fort this information might come in handy :
Only two private bus operators ply from Mumbai to Vijaydurg directly i.e (Sai Pooja Travels and Mumbarkar Travels). I travelled through Sai Pooja which offers daily services from Dadar to Vijaydurg. Besides there is State transport which offers the same services.
Stay : Two Hotels are there near the Fort namely Hotel Vijaydurg and Hotel Suruchi. Both are moderately expensive but worth it.

Rameshwar Temple, Girye near Vijaydurg
Rameshwar Temple was built by Gangadhar Pant Bhanu, brother of the infuential Peshwa Finance minister Nana Phadnavis. The Rameshwar temple nestles in a valley, at the bottom of this steep incline. To reach the temple, you must walk down a long incline with sheer walls carved out of the laterite rock. Te rock faces are lined with niches to hold oil lamps. Inside the entry arch hangs the bell captured from an enemy vessel by Sardar Anandrao Dhulap (Admiral in the Peshwa navy) in 1793. The wooden art-work inside the temple is characteristic of ancient culture. Murals decorated with scenes from Hindu myth and legend on outer walls of Temple murals havê been badly damaged. South side of the Temple, stands the Samadhi of Sambhaji Angre son of Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre. Annual grand fair is held on the day of Maha Shivratri (in the Marathi month of Magha) as well as on Mondays of the Month of Shravana when a large number of devotees visit this temple. Besides other tourists on the way to Vijaydurg Fort also visit this significant temple.
