Iceland with Cameron Hewitt | Rick Steves Travel Talks
In this travel talk, Cameron Hewitt shares tips for traveling in Iceland — whether for 24 hours or 2 weeks. From the user-friendly capital, Reykjavík, we'll day-trip to the Blue Lagoon lava-rock spa, the Golden Circle, and the volcanic South Coast. Then we'll drive around the country's perimeter on the 800-mile Ring Road, which links bubbling thermal springs, jagged volcanic peaks, fjordside towns, and dreamy glacial lagoons. Visit for more European travel information.

BUBBLE HOTEL, ICELAND | Sonia Nicolson
Last week I had the chance to stay overnight in the Aurora Bubble Hotel, known as the 5 Million Star Hotel, so I took my Mum and we headed off to sleep in a bubble under the stars. A beautifully crisp winters day, we arrived into a winter wonderland, ready for the Aurora and to sleep under a blanket of stars.
The Bubbles act like a hotel and provide you with a room which is fully transparent, providing the perfect Northern Lights Hotel. Each Bubble sleeps two adults in a comfortable double bed, minimum age is six years old for health and safety reasons. The structure is completely inflatable and made out of a fire-retardant PVC tarpaulin, you literally sleep in a bubble. The structure keeps itself inflated by a slight over-pressure from a noiseless ventilation system. The system is designed to renew the air 2-7 times per hour, this also prevents any humidity. The system has an heating element with thermostat so the Bubble is cosy and warm all winter.
Nestled in a small Icelandic wood the Bubbles are the ideal Northern Lights viewing platform, lie back and watch the starry sky. Sleep under the stars, right in the woods, it's a very special night. Some of the Bubbles have a white panel around the bottom of the walls at bed height which gives a little privacy but this doesn't interfere with any Northern Lights viewing.
The location of the Bubbles is kept secret until you have booked but I can tell you that they are located in the countryside near Fludir and the Golden Circle. It's about an hours drive from Reykjavik and two hours from Keflavik Airport. The Bubbles are nestled in a beautiful spot, set back from the road and surrounded by trees. You can also see the volcanos Katla and Eyjafjallajökull in the distance.
This is an opportunity to truly chill out - lie back and take it all in. Sleeping under the stars and watching the Aurora Borealis dance above you might be a dream come true. It’s the ultimate glamping experience. So, if the sky is clear of clouds then you will hopefully have a good chance of seeing a starry sky with some magical Northern Lights dancing above your head.
The Bubbles are part of a tour offered by Northern Lights Iceland. This means that you can't stay without booking the full tour. The tour is fabulous and takes you in a luxury suburban jeep to the Golden Circle stopping at Geysir, Gulfoss and the Secret Lagoon. The tour group is small, maximum six people, and there are only nine Bubbles on the site so it feels very private.
Nearby is the town of Fludir where you could take in the waters of the Secret Lagoon. This is a unique natural hot spring, the oldest swimming pool in Iceland (made in 1891). The water holds at 38-40 Celsius (100-104 Fahrenheit) all year round. Swim and float around, try to find the hottest part of the lagoon. You can also take a short walk around the lagoon to see the beautiful landscape, original changing hut, natural geysirs heating the lagoon and the nearby greenhouse.
If you are looking for food then there is Minilik, an Ethiopian Restaurant nearby and this gets great reviews. We went to Mika, a family run restaurant specialising in handmade chocolates and langoustine dishes. I highly recommend the langoustine soup and garlic bread.
As the Bubbles are small, there isn’t room for a suitcase or many belongings so pack light. A small rucsac or hand luggage sized case is ideal. Pack you pyjamas, wash bag, camera (and tripod for Aurora shots), a good book and your swimming stuff for the Secret Lagoon. Towels are provided at the Bubble but bring your own for the Secret Lagoon.

Glaumbaer (Iceland) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Glaumbaer in Iceland.
Lush green surrounds the historic buildings of the remote farm settlement of Glaumbaer deep in the north of Iceland.Glaumbaer’s turf houses were built in the late 19th century but the origin of the farm dates back far longer. Many of its stone structures were built by the Vikings who lived in the region during the 11th century. As was common in most of Iceland’s former farming communities, Glaumbaer contained several buildings that were located around a central building. The ‘badstofa’ served as a working, living and sleeping space and was also the location of the communal kitchen, one of the most popular places to be in the harsh cold of winter. In addition to the important archaeological finds that have recently been made, the former ancient community of farmers and Vikings that once lived here no doubt still contains many a secret yet to be discovered.

Iceland Self Drive Adventure by Arctic Truck - are you game?
We don't follow the standard Iceland self drive tour route. Using our Arctic modified 4x4s we get right off the beaten track. Chase the northern lights, get your daily dose of Iceland's dramatic waterfalls and drive through the island's remote highland trails forged by Vikings. Not many get to experience Iceland like this.
For sale in Iceland - historic farm - great location
Almost as hard to pronounce as Eyjafjallajokull, the farm Eyvindarmuli (east) is now for sale. Location in the beautiful south of Iceland gives access to popular destinations as well as into the vast highlands. This is a rare opportunity as a private residence, as an opportunity in tourism, as a horse farm . . . or simply as a farm . . . as its been since in the age of the vikings.

Iceland - to Akureyri and back + Lake Mývatn
Music CC :
How you choose to make your first trip to Iceland can vary a lot. You can fly into Reykjavik, spend a couple of days there relaxing, maybe visit the Blue Lagoon spa.
You can go for a bit longer and take advantage of one of the day tours from the city – visiting sights such as the ‘Golden Circle’, watch a geyser, see an immense waterfall, see evidence of the volcanic nature of the island with volcano cones close to the city and fault lines from the tectonic plates Iceland is situated on which are slowly drifting apart.
The longer you are there, the further into the country you will want to go. Many people will want to do the Ring Road loop – an 800 mile road trip around the circumference of the island. You can hire your own vehicle or travel around on guided bus. In theory it can be driven in 24 hours, but in practice you would want to spend much longer to see the fantastic locations on route.
Or you may want to visit one area of the island such as the Westfjords, with the knowledge that you will come back to visit other areas on later trips.
There are many music and arts festivals you can base a trip around. Two of the big ones are Secret Solstice and Iceland Airwaves, but there are smaller festivals also.
While Reykjavik has by far the largest population, smaller towns also have much to offer. Akureyri on the north coast is a beautiful town set on the Eyjafjörður fjord with plenty to keep you in the area for a few days. It has its own tours to places like the Goðafoss waterfall and the volcanic region around Lake Mývatn.
Getting to Iceland can be by direct flight or by transatlantic flights which stopover in Iceland. There are currently over twenty airlines flying into Iceland. Once there you can fly on to other cities in Iceland by internal flight.
There are two airports serving Reykjavik, most international flights will come into Keflavik airport 30 miles south west of Reykjavik. You can catch a bus from there into the city. The second airport is for domestic flights and is situated in the city, a short taxi ride away. You may fly from here to locations such as Akureyri.
A walking tour of Reykjavík can take in highlights such the Hallgrímskirkja church perched on a hill in the city; the Harpa concert hall down at the waterfront which hosts a range of cultural events; the Tjörnin lake is pleasant to walk around; the harbour is interesting and there are whale and puffin watching trips from there. There is a botantic garden, a zoo and Old Reykjavík has a number of historic buildings.
There are several thermal swimming pools in the city which is where Icelanders relax in their spare time. These include Sundhöll Reykjavíkur, Vesturbæjarlaug, Sundlaug Seltjarnarness and Laugardalslaug which is close to the youth hostel. You can also bathe at the geothermal Nauthólsvík Beach where a lagoon with sea walls allow cold sea and hot geothermal water to fuse together for higher temperature water.
There are many museums and art galleries in the city, some of these are: the National Museum for a range of artifacts, the Saga museum for Icelandic history, several Reykjavík Art Museums, the National Gallery of Iceland for paintings, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography has a gallery of good photography exhibitions, and last but not least the Icelandic Phallological Museum.
Laugavegur is the main shopping street, and you should walk up and down here at least once. There are many cool shops, bars and restaurants to check out. On a weekend evening the street becomes a line of honking Icelanders cars coming into the city to party. The party starts late and goes on to the early hours of the morning.

Snorkeling in Silfra, Thingvellir National Park, Iceland (from start to finish)
Snorkeling in Silfra, Thingvellir National Park, Iceland - January 2015.
A big thank you to the guys at dive.is for looking after us on an extremely cold and snowy day. The exciting drive from from Reykjavík to Silfra (due to the heavy snow and ice on the roads) set the mood for what was an incredible experience. My thanks go out to Michael from the dive.is team who drove us there, and took our group through tectonic fissure (there was 6 of us in our group). The water temperature on this day was a chilly 2 degrees! To be fair, I got so cold getting suited up (first layer was a base-layer thermal onesie, followed by a dry-suit), by the time I got in the water - I didn't even bat an eyelid.
The base layer and dry suit are provided by dive.is, but you wear your normal clothes underneath the base layer you put on. I stayed pretty snug and warm (initially), but one word of warning - the gloves and head gear you are given are made from neoprene - and these do not keep the water out! These are the parts of you that will get cold and wet!
I didn't bring a towel with me (though I did bring a spare change of clothes on the advice of the website), though in all honesty - you dont really need one - as you air dry pretty quickly. If for some reason your dry suit doesn't keep you dry (perhaps you didn't zip up properly) - you'll need that change of clothes! (that didn't happen though, and instances of that happening are quite rare).
OK - the snorkeling. Simply put - Amazing. The guides (and websites) recommend that you are fairly confident swimmer - but to be fair, the dry suits are so full of air - you just bob along the top of the water (as you''ll see from me flipping on my back from time to time). You just need to paddle your feet, and occasionally use your arms/hands if your swimming steering is leading you towards the wall :-)
The visibility was excellent - you really can see a few hundred feet. The few parts where the fissure bed became quite shallow - other snorkelers (if they are in front of you) can kick up the sand/sediment - thus muddying up the water and reducing visibility - otherwise you're in for a real treat.
I apologise in advance for the quality of my filming - this was the maiden voyage of my underwater camera and this combined with the rather bulky dry-suit gloves made for some poor angles and shooting (mainly at the start). I used a Nikon AW120 with an armband float (the red thing that bobs in front of the camera at the start of the video). I didn't have a need for the armband float (luckily), but I didn't want to take the risk of losing the camera to the depths of the fissure, should I accidentally drop the camera whilst filming. Incidentally, I did drop the camera whilst in the Blue Lagoon (different video you can find on my channel), and the camera did stay afloat!
If you are planning on going, please note the following (hopefully it will be useful):
1. Bring 2 pairs of socks (you don't wear shoes in the dry suit). It can be pretty cold - so double socks will ensure you can still feel your toes at the end of snorkeling session.
2. You'll be getting changed into the thermal onesie and dry-suit in the open (with other people). Make sure you are already wearing what you'll be snorkeling in. I was already wearing base layer trouser's and then a water-proof outer. I had to discard the water proof trousers as the thermal onesie you have to wear would not have allowed me to fit in it otherwise. My top was a base-layer long sleeve under a thermal jumper. This was fine and kept me snug. You cant wear any high-collar clothing when snorkeling, as the dry suit has to have tight contact around your neck to keep the water out, and your body dry!
3. Do you need an underwater camera?
Well this is a personal choice. I found the camera a slight distraction from fully immersing myself in the surroundings (though I have enjoyed re-watching the video a few times). My snorkeling guide did have his own underwater camera - and took plenty of snaps of the group while we snorkeled. These are just stills though - so if you did want video, you'll need your own underwater video camera.
Despite filming my very own snorkeling adventure, I purchased the shots the tour guide took (unless you are a master of the underwater selfie - it's better to rely on the experience of your tour guide for some good snaps). I cant comment on whether 'you' will have a decent shot of yourself on their camera - but you can browse the photos they take of you before deciding on whether to purchase the set.
I'll endeavour to add further information/comments when I get the chance! Thank you for reading.
