Battle of Largs 1263
The Battle of Largs in 1263 brought to an end nearly 500 years of Viking occupation of Britain. This video covers events leading up to the battle and explains how the Scots succeeded in repelling the Viking invaders. It also tells the story of how the Thistle played a part in the victory and was thereafter adopted as the national emblem of Scotland.
The film is narrated by Lesley McCormack. The film-maker is James Willetts.

Largs is a town on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland, about 33 miles from Glasgow. The original name means the slopes in Scottish Gaelic. A popular seaside resort with a pier, the town markets itself on its historic links with the Vikings and an annual festival is held each year in early September. In 1263 Largs was the site of the Battle of Largs between the Norwegian and the Scottish armies. The National Mòd has also been held here in the past.
Largs evolved from the estates of North Cunninghame over which the Montgomeries of Skelmorlie became temporal lords in the seventeenth century. Sir Robert Montgomerie built Skelmorlie Aisle in the ancient kirk of Largs in 1636 as a family mausoleum. Today the monument is all that remains of the old kirk.
From its beginnings as a small village around its kirk, Largs evolved into a busy and popular seaside resort in the nineteenth century. Large hotels appeared and the pier was constructed in 1834. It was not until 1895, however, that the railway made the connection to Largs, sealing the town's popularity. Largs also became a fashionable place to live in and several impressive mansions were built, the most significant of which included 'Netherhall', the residence of William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, the physicist and engineer.
Despite its diminished status as a holiday resort, much of Largs is still geared towards tourism. There is the award-winning Vikingar Centre at Barrfields, an interactive look into the history of Viking life; Kelburn Country Centre, Barrfields Pavilion Theatre, Largs Swimming Pool, Douglas Park and Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre. But it is best known for 'Nardinis', the famous ice cream parlour, cafe and restaurant, that dominates the Esplanade and which reopened in late 2008 following clearance from Historic Scotland and major renovation works. St. Columba's Parish Church is situated opposite Nardinis and contains a Heritage Centre.
Kelburn Castle, situated between Largs and Fairlie, is the ancestral home of the Boyle (originally de Boyville) family, the hereditary Earls of Glasgow. Kelburn is believed to be the oldest castle in Scotland to have been continuously inhabited by the same family. The Noddsdale Water flows from the north to reach the sea at the north end of Largs, and Brisbane House sited in the dale about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) up the river was the birthplace of the soldier and Governor of New South Wales Sir Thomas Brisbane.

The Last Battle of the Vikings | PBS America
For hundreds of years the Norse Vikings had dominated huge swathes of Scotland. But now their brutal rule was being challenged. The Scots were fighting back – and King Hakon Hakonson was determined to break them.
Mustering a fleet of 120 longships, comparable in size to the Spanish Armada, King Hakon’s fleet seemed invincible. But driven ashore by a powerful storm near present-day Largs, the Norsemen were vulnerable to attack. And on 2 October 1263, the tide of history would turn.
Marine archeologist Dr Jon Henderson tells the incredible story of the Norsemen in Scotland, and reveals how, although the battle at Largs marked the end of an era, their presence continues to shape the Scottish nation today.
The Largs Viking Festival
This video is about the Largs Viking Festival on Saturday 7th September 2019. Record crowds enjoyed a day out in perfect weather at the living history 13th Century Viking Village and, in the evening, followed a torchlit parade to Broomfields to watch the burning of a Viking longboat, a skirmish, a fire juggler, and a brilliant fireworks display. They also witnessed spectacular aerobatic manoeuvres by two jet planes, were entertained by internationally renowned musicians on stage, visited special food and craft markets, and experienced all the fun of the fair on the prom. This video, filmed and produced by James Willetts with a commentary by Lesley McCormack, recreates the events of a memorable day.
Eskilstuna vikingar
This was a contest between russians, british, swedes, finnish and more people travelling around whole europe doing shows like this. The vikings in this video were actually from different countries and some of them could not speak english that good!
The reason they camed here was because my city Eskilstuna (Sweden) celebrate 350 years, maybe they would had come anyway at some other time but anyway they did come now and this is the first time I see anything like this in real!
They were actually hitting one and another using a technique where you slow down just before hitting, almost like in movies, but when they hit their sword and shields it sound hard.
I thought it was cool so I decided to upload it and enjoy! It's not everyday you see anything like this and its a nice cult.

In the 10th century, after the death of his father, the young Viking Prince Vladimir of Novgorod is forced into exile, across the frozen sea, to escape his brother who murdered his other brother. His refusal to kill will cost him everything he's had, as it takes more swords to uphold peace than to wage war
