Vikøyri is the administrative center of the municipality of Vik in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The village is located at the mouth of the Vikja river on the south shore of the Sognefjorden, roughly near the midpoint of Norway's longest fjord. The village lies along Norwegian National Road 13 which leads north to the ferry to Balestrand and south to the village of Vossevangen . The 1.26 square kilometres village of Vikøyri has a population of 1,195; giving the village a population density of 948 inhabitants per square kilometre .Vikøyri sits about 13 kilometres south of the village of Balestrand , about 25 kilometres northeast of the village of Arnafjord. To the north and west of Vikøyri lie the villages of Vangsnes, Feios, and Fresvik. Vikøyri is 10 kilometres northwest of the Fresvikbreen glacier and about 26 kilometres northeast of the big lake Holskardvatnet. Vikøyri is the site of one of the Tine cheese factories. It is the only factory in the world that produces gammelost, a unique Norwegian cheese. The village also has the only prison in Sogn og Fjordane county. There are also two medieval churches on the south side of the village: Hove Church and the Hopperstad Stave Church . Vik Church is also located in the village, although it is much newer and it is the main church for the municipality.

Hopperstad Stave Church, Vikoyri, Norway

Hopperstad Stave Church is located just outside Vikoyri, Norway. Thought to be build around 1130, is one of the oldest stave churches to still be standing in Norway today.

Hopperstad Stave Church is a historic parish church and part of The Church of Norway. This beautiful stave church is located in Vik Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Vikøyri. It was once the church for the Hopperstad parish in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The church is currently owned by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments. The brown, wooden stave church was built during the 12th century. The church seats about 30 people.

The stave church is thought to have been built around the year 1130 and still stands at its original location. In 1997, a series of samples from the logs were collected for dendrochronological dating of the church. A total of seven samples produced an estimate for the construction ranging from 1034 to 1116 and resulted in no definite conclusion. The only possible conclusion is that this is one of the oldest stave churches still standing in Norway.

(EN) Hopperstad Stave Church is a stave church, just outside the village of Vikøyri in Vik Municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The church is currently owned by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments. The two old parishes of Hopperstad and Hove was abolished in 1875, and replaced by the new, united, Vik parish. The new Vik Church was finished in 1877, and the two middle age churches of Hopperstad and Hove have sice then been museum churches. Vik parish is a part of Indre Sogn deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin.

The Biggest, Best, Baddest, Beautiful..est, Stave Church in Norway *Heddal Stave Church

Heddal stave church is located at Heddal in Notodden municipality, Norway.
Previously nealy one thousand of these wooden, Stave Churches, stood all across Norway, however now there are only 28 left with Heddal (this one) being the largest of the remaining churches. Many of the other churches were pulled down due to being built in the wrong faith. Heddal remained due to the great size of the church it self.
As you'll soon see in the video there is alot of wood. Everything is wood. So much wood.
