If you’ve ever been to Tossa de Mar, you’ll easily recognize its unmistakable coastal profile. Its main beach, Platja Gran, is dotted with colorful boats and sun seekers, especially in the summer. And to the south of it, you’ll find a small, but high peninsula with medieval fortified walls that protects the old town of Vila Vella. Tossa de Mar is that rare town where you can simultaneously watch the Mediterranean waves and get a charming view of medieval history — without even turning your head.
In fact, Vila Vella the last fortified medieval town in Costa Brava, and it’s still vibrant as ever. Take a stroll around, and you’ll find that behind these tall walls are thriving restaurants, charming cobblestone pedestrian streets, and breathtaking views of the Costa Brava.
The medieval fortress that we know was run down until the 12th century and was built to protect the city against North African pirates. It also has seven defense towers: four large towers and three cylindrical towers. It was reformed during the mid-14th century and was fully completed in 1387. Amazingly, the walls are intact and well-preserved. During the 21th century, it was built up as the iconic site that it is today.
The Vila Vella enceinte is the only example of a fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast. Its present appearance dates back to the end of the 14th century. It still has the entire original perimeter with battlemented stone walls, four turrets and three cylindrical towers with parapets. At the highest point, where the lighthouse stands today, was, until the beginning of the 19th century, the castle of the Abbot of the Monastery Santa Maria de Ripoll, the territorial Lord of the town. The site has been declared a national historic monument in 1931.
The interior of the Old Town is a charming place with narrow, cobblestoned streets, the Governor's House (now the Municipal museum), the House of Holy Cloth (Sant Drap), a medieval hospital, and remnants of a Romanesque church and a Gothic church.

Places to see in ( Girona - Spain ) Castillo de Tossa de Mar
Originally constructed to spot marauders at sea, the walled medieval Castillo de Tossa de Mar now looks out over the much less menacing scene of locals and vacationers lazing on the wide beach below.
This castle-cum-lighthouse on the top of Mt. Guardí dates back to the 12th century, and you can reach it via a walk or a short tram ride up the hill. Once at the Castillo de Tossa de Mar , stand by the cannons pointing out over the cliff to imagine yourself defending the city against medieval pirates.
A handful of restaurants built within old houses in the castle walls provide ideal spots for lunch. Add Castillo de Tossa de Mar and other attractions to your Tossa de Mar trip
Tossa de Mar is architecturally a medieval masterpiece, Tossa de Mar sits majestically on Catalonia’s Girona coast – basking in its beautiful Mediterranean climate. The walled old town offers stunning views of the surrounding coast, and is the perfect location to soak up some of the history of the region, as well as the sun. Did you know that Marc Chagall, the French painter, loved the quality of their life.

Tossa de Mar is a municipality in Catalonia, Spain, located on the Costa Brava, about 103 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border. Tossa de Mar is accessible through Girona Airport, some distance north.
In 966 Tossa de Mar was ceded by Count Miró of Barcelona to the Abbey of Ripoll. Some two centuries later, in 1187 Tossa de Mar was granted its charter by the Abbot of Ripoll, coinciding with the building of a church atop Mount Guardí, the remnants of which can still be seen today. Sometime in the 12th century the mediaeval town was walled off and a castle was built on the highest point of Mt. Guardí, this castle was to be subsequently replaced by a wind mill, and this in turn by a lighthouse which is still operational.
By the year 1500 the first houses were built extra-murs to accommodate population growth. This process was greatly accelerated during the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping an urban configuration which was to remain practically unchanged until the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s. In 1989 Tossa de Mar was the first place in the world to declare itself an Anti-Bullfighting City.
Contrary to popular belief that Tossa de Mar has traditionally been a fishing town, in medieval times and until the arrival of tourism, the local economy was mostly based on agricultural production, principally Grape vine and cork. There was a thriving export market of the latter (in the form of cork taps shipped to the Americas) during the 18th century and early 19th century.
Tossa de Mar has three main beaches:
The Tossa Beach (Platja Gran), in front of downtown. This beach is enclosed to the west by the medieval castle. It is 380m long and 60m wide.
La Mar Menuda, on the other side of the bay. It has all the usual services and facilities, such as sports equipment hire. Local police patrol the area on bicycles. Dimensions of the beach : 180m long and 20m wide.
El Codolar, behind the walls.
The Vila Vella enceinte is the only example of a fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast. Its present appearance dates back to the end of the 14th century. The Municipal Museum, built in Late Gothic style, is situated in the Governor's House, inside the Vila Vella enceinte. It used to be the residence of the jurisdictional governors of Tossa de Mar and its environs, who ruled for the Abbots of the monastery Santa Maria de Ripoll.
The museum was opened on 1 September 1935. It houses an important collection of contemporary art with works of Spanish and foreign artists who frequented Tossa de Mar during the 1930s, such as the Celestial Violinist by Marc Chagall. The archaeological section houses artefacts dating from the Paleolithical Period to the Late Middle Ages. Of particular note are the mosaics found in the atrium of the Roman Villa of the Ametllers, dating from the end of the 4th - beginning of the 5th century.

2019 | Tossa de Mar
(Lloret de Mar).
**********
A small and incredibly cozy town, located 90 kilometers north of Barcelona, in a charming bay on the Costa Brava. Tossa de Mar, with a population of just over 5 thousand people, is part of the province of Girona as part of the autonomous community of Catalonia. Symbol: the medieval Vila Vella fortress with its “Old Town”, surrounded by a defensive wall with watch towers, where ancient buildings are still preserved.
Beach lovers will find the beaches Gran and Mar Menuda in Tossa's center. More active tourists also have something to do (Tripadvisor to help you). As for shops, cafes, restaurants - they are abundant here. But discos and noisy night parties - this is not about Tossa. If you wish, you can always get in a car/bus/boat and go to the neighboring and vibrant Lloret de Mar.
Pleasant warm climate, calm, quiet sea and truly wonderful views in the area. Especially recommended for families, dreamers and romantics.
