I had a couple of hours to spare in between jobs so decided to go and see the wisteria in bloom and sit in the gardens for a while.

Ravello, Italy: Town, Amalfi Coast Views, Gardens & Gelato!
In May 2019 we visited Ravello Italy, a little town in the hills of the Amalfi Coast. We were lucky to have Ravello weather with clear sunny blue skies for good views of the surrounding Italian coastline of Costiera Amalfitana.

Places to see in ( Ravello - Italy ) Villa Cimbrone Gardens
Villa Cimbrone is a historic building in Ravello, on the Amalfi coast of southern Italy. Dating from at least the 11th century AD, it is famous for its scenic belvedere, the Terrazzo dell'lnfinito (the Terrace of Infinity). Much altered and extended in the early twentieth century by Ernest William Beckett (later Lord Grimthorpe), the villa is today composed of many salvaged architectural elements from other parts of Italy and elsewhere; little of the original structure remains visible. The gardens were redeveloped by Beckett at the same time. The villa is now a hotel, its gardens open to the public.
Villa Cimbrone stands on a rocky outcrop known as Cimbronium, and it is from this landscape feature that the villa takes its name. The earliest references to the villa date back to the eleventh century AD, when the villa belonged to the Accongiogioco, a noble family. It later passed to the ownership of a wealthy and influential family, the Fusco, who are also recorded in 1291 as owning the local church of S. Angelo de Cimbrone.
At a later stage in its history the villa became part of the nearby monastery of Santa Chiara, and during this period of the villa's history the papal arms of Cardinal Della Rovere were placed on the old entrance gate. From the seventeenth century the villa's history is uncertain, but by the second half of the nineteenth century the villa had passed to the Amici family of Atrani.
Beckett had visited the villa during his travels in Italy and had fallen in love with it. He bought it from the Amici family in 1904, and enlisted the help of Nicola Mansi, a tailor-barber-builder from Ravello whom he had met in England, to help with the restoration and enlargement of the villa and gardens.
He embarked on an ambitious programme of works, including the construction of battlements, terraces and cloisters in a mixture of mock-Gothic, Moorish and Venetian architectural styles. The gardens, strung out along the cliff face, were similarly redeveloped. Grimthorpe was reputed to be the father of Violet Trefusis; the connection with Violet brought Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson as visitors, and Vita is said to have given advice about the garden, though her own gardening ventures at Long Barn still lay some years in the future.

Lucky to get some sunshine for the visit to Villa Cimbrone that stands on a rocky outcrop known as Cimbronium in the town of Ravello, and it is from this landscape feature that the villa takes its name. The earliest references to the villa date back to the eleventh century AD, when the villa belonged to the Accongiogioco, a noble family. While contemplating from those Armida's orchards, among the roses and the hydrangeas, that magic sea in which the blue colour of a very limpid sky is reflected, the wish of being able to fly comes out ... Right at the edge of the crag there was a terrace commanding an enchanting view; it was surrounded by horrible marble statues which, however, from afar, had a sort of appeal.
Much altered and extended in the early twentieth century by the British banker Ernest William Beckett, the villa is today composed of many salvaged architectural elements from other parts of Italy and elsewhere; little of the original structure remains visible.
The gardens were redeveloped by Beckett at the same time. The villa is now a hotel, its gardens open to the public. Beckett died in London in 1917 and his body was brought to Villa Cimbrone to be buried at the base of the Temple of Bacchus in the gardens
Many famous visitors came to the villa during the Beckett family's ownership. It was a favourite haunt of the Bloomsbury Group, including Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, E. M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, and Lytton Strachey. Other visitors included D. H. Lawrence, Vita Sackville-West, Edward James, Diana Mosley, Henry Moore, T. S. Eliot, Jean Piaget, Winston Churchill and the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The actress Greta Garbo and her then-lover, the conductor Leopold Stokowski, stayed at the villa several times in the late 1930s.

Villa Cimbrone is an old farmhouse in Ravello on the Amalfi coast with views over the Gulf of Salerno that was transformed into a fortified palace by English politician Lord Grimthorpe in the early twentieth century. Vita Sackville-West contributed to the current design of the garden, which is English in style but with views of the Amalfi coast. The garden is laid out along the clifftop and includes a Temple of Bacchus and Roman statues. The villa is now a luxury hotel.

After Beckett's death, the villa passed to his son. Beckett's daughter Lucy (Lucille Katherine Beckett, 1884–1979) also lived at the villa, where she was a keen gardener and breeder of roses, including the Rose of Ravello in the thirties.
Many famous visitors came to the villa during the Beckett family's ownership. It was a favourite haunt of the Bloomsbury Group, including Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, E. M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, and Lytton Strachey. Other visitors included D. H. Lawrence, Vita Sackville-West, Edward James, Diana Mosley, Henry Moore, T. S. Eliot, Jean Piaget, Winston Churchill and the Duke and Duchess of Kent. The actress Greta Garbo and her then-lover, the conductor Leopold Stokowski, stayed at the villa several times in the late 1930s; a visit of 1938 is memorialized on a plaque.
The villa was sold in 1960 to the Vuilleumier family, who used it first as a private family home, and for the past few years as a hotel.
Hotel Villa Cimbrone Wedding in Ravello Italy | Amalfi Coast
We first met Isabelle when we filmed her sister’s wedding in the south of France a few years ago. We knew she was thinking of Italy as a possible location for her own wedding, so we were delighted when she got in touch with us to let us know that everything was confirmed. Of all the years we have been filming abroad, it may come as a surprise to know that this was our very first time in Italy. So we were incredibly excited for this day.
Isabelle began the day by getting ready at Palazzo Avino, a wonderful venue with fantastic views of the ocean. Waking up to this view is exactly the kind of thing every bride should have on her wedding day. Isabelle and her bridesmaids spent the morning being styled by Orazio Spisto before Isabelle stepped into her Katie May wedding dress (and Pronovias wedding skirt). All the while, Catherine from the wonderful The Wedding Boutique Italy was busy setting up their chic Italian Villa Cimbrone wedding on the other side of Ravello. Trust in suppliers is a great thing to have on a wedding day and so the wonderfully creative Armando Malafronte was busy creating a beautiful floral arrangement for the ceremony.
The whole day was full of love and laughter, smiles and hugs from all family and friends. This was one of those weddings that was just absolutely fun. From start to finish, it was full of happy people, beautiful views, sunshine and love. We also go to work with the talented Gianluca and Mary Adovasio who were a joy to work alongside.
We had high expectations for Isabelle + Rob’s Chic Italian Villa Cimbrone wedding. It didn’t disappoint. Now we can’t wait until our next Amalfi coast wedding adventure.
