Villa Valmarana ai Nani is composed of three buildings, the Palazzina (Owners’ Residence) built in 1669, the Foresteria (Guest-House) and the Scuderia (Stables) built in 1720. They are embraced by a large historical park with rose gardens, a giardino all'italiana with its open air theatre and well, a double hornbeams alley terminating with a statue of Neptune.
The Villa takes its name from the statues of the 17 stone dwarfs, originally placed in the garden, now on the walls surrounding the house and which inspired the Villa's legend of Princess Layana. The dwarfs were probably sculpted by Francesco Uliaco, most likely from the drawings by Giandomenico Tiepolo. The Palazzina and the Foresteria are frescoed by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, hired in 1757 by Giustino Valmarana.

Villa Valmarana ai Nani
Vicenza, Italy, June 2014.
Villa Valmarana ai Nani is a marvellous architectural and artistic site composed by three buildings and a wide 18th century park.
The three buildings, the Palazzina (Owners' Residence) (1669), the Foresteria (Guest-House) and the Scuderia (Stables) (1720) are surrounded by green areas designed to respond to the different esthetical tastes and functional needs: ranging from the giardino all'italiana with the pigeon-house and the well, to the walk under the hornbeams, to the Pagoda in the woods.
The Palazzina and the Foresteria have frescoes by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, hired in 1757 by Giustino Valmarana. The Villa takes its name from the statues of the 17 stone dwarfs, originally placed in the garden, now on the walls surrounding the house. Among them, we find a number of characters from the Teatro dei burattini and from the Commedia dell'arte (the King, the Soldier, the Doctor, the Turk, the Guardian of the Seraglio, etc.). The dwarfs were probably sculpted by Francesco Uliaco, most likely from the drawings by Giandomenico Tiepolo.
The Valmarana family still lives in the Villa, which is universally considered the highest expression of the painting of the eighteenth century and one of the highest examples of the Tiepolo's genius.

Villa Valmarana ai Nani is a Venetian villa located on the outskirts of the city of Vicenza , on the slopes of the San Bastian hill, offshoot of the nearby Monte Berico . The villa is famous for the extraordinary cycle of frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo (who painted the villa in the period of its maximum artistic splendor) and his son Giandomenico .
The nickname ai Nani, with which it is known, to differentiate it from the other villas of the same family, is due to the 17 stone sculptures representing the dwarves , once scattered in the park, today aligned on the wall. The villa, although still inhabited by the noble family of Valmarana , is open to the public six days a week, like the nearby Villa Capra called La Rotonda of Palladio , owned by another branch of the Valmarana family. The driveway to the villa branches off from the road to the Rotonda, a few hundred meters away.
The first building, the residential one, wanted by Giovanni Maria Bertolo , was completed in 1670 . During the years following the structure were added a barchessa , a guesthouse , a stable and various other buildings, typical of Venetian villas ; however, the hilly location and the owners' interests mean that this villa is characterized more as a residence than, as it happens for many other Venetian villas, as an agricultural production center. In 1720 the property was sold to the Valmarana brothers : even today it is this family that owns the complex and lives there.
In 1736 Giustino Valmarana commissioned Francesco Muttoni (who for the Valmarana family had already worked with the city palace of San Faustino ) to restore the villa; was Muttoni to make many of the changes that are currently seen, such as the triangular pediments on the two sides of the main building, the stairways and side turrets of the building, as well as the infill of the arches of the guest house and the construction of the stables, developed on two floors, with access from the avenue leading to the villa and from the square above.
In April 1944, some incendiary bombs struck the villa and destroyed most of the ceiling in the hall of the Eneide . Almost all the frescoes were removed, partly by using the tear technique and partly detached by demolishing the wall behind it and retaining the full thickness of the plaster on which they had been painted. When the war was over they were reapplied to the walls.
The guesthouse presents a more modern style of the rest of the villa, with references to the Enlightenment and scenes of everyday life, from the representation of the Venetian countryside, to those of the nobility, up to that of distant China . In this part of the villa the hand of Tiepolo son appears decisively, denying the taste of the sublime paternal.
